    On the field at Kauffman Stadium before the May 13th game between the Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies I was looking for Rene Lachemann to tell him that one of his former teammates wanted to see him. But Rene was not around, so I began asking different Rockies players and staff if they had seen Mr. Lachemann. All of them responded with the same reply, “You will hear him before you see him.” Soon it was discovered what they meant as the bench coach of the Rockies made his way up from under the stadium where he had been working with one of the catchers, and his booming voice could be heard. This voice has been heard by many major league and minor league players for many years as Rene Lachemann has managed and coached and trained these players in the finer points of the game. Rene was born in Los Angeles California and is the youngest of three brothers to have long careers in professional baseball. Rene served as a batboy for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 to 1962, went to the University of California and was signed by the Kansas City Athletics in 1964 as a catcher. He played for the KC A’s in 1965 and 1966 and moved with the team to Oakland appearing in games in 1968. He began managing in the Oakland minor leagues in 1973 spending 5 seasons in the A’s system before going to the Seattle Mariners organization. He took his first major league managers job in 1981 with the Mariners succeeding Maury Wills, and led the M’s from 1981-1983.

Cho DEGREE: Master of Science COLLEGE: Teachers College DATE: July 2020 PAGES: 27 The Designated Hitter (DH) rule in Major League Baseball (MLB) is a topic of great debate. In the National League (NL), all players take a turn at bat. However, in the American League (AL), a DH usually bats for the pitcher. MLB pitchers typically do not have strong batting averages. The DH rule was created to increase a team’s offense. This study looked at whether there is an apparent difference between the AL and the NL. In theory, a DH will lead to more hits, more runs, and therefore a higher scoring game. This study looked at the average runs per game and total home runs for the AL and NL during the 1998 through 2018 regular seasons. Since the assumptions of parametric multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were not met, a nonparametric analysis was used. The permutation test for multivariate means results showed an apparent difference between the two leagues (p < .05). A quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) was used as a follow up test and showed home runs as the variable driving the difference between the two leagues. Therefore, the AL has better scoring performance than the NL.

Many of the other numbers weren't kind to him. After a difficult and injury-filled 2017 season, which began his five-year contract worth $70 million, Desmond was healthy enough for 160 games in '18. But he batted .236 and wasn't treated kindly by the Wins Above Replacement stat -- minus- 0.7, per FanGraphs, and minus-0.6, per Baseball-Reference. As a comparison, Desmond averaged 2.2 and 2.1 WAR, respectively, over his seven full seasons before signing with Colorado. But with consistent production absent, Desmond at times fulfilled the Rockies' contention that he is a winning player. His 22 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 82 runs and 88 RBIs in 2018 are stats many players would love, and the Rockies will tell you he had a knack for the right, heady play during the team's second-half run. Hey, it all made him one of baseball's most interesting figures on Twitter; many games began with vitriolic reaction to him being in the lineup, and more than a handful ended with an apology after a late home run. Often fans familiar with his community involvement and interaction jumped to his defense. "The one thing I can say, I feel like no matter what the situation was, no matter what the numbers said, I feel like I came out and tried to do something to help the team win," Desmond said while clearing out of Coors Field after the Rockies were eliminated from the National League Division Series by the Brewers.

Built in 1995, Coors Field is an all brick stadium constructed in the heart of Denver to resemble classic ballparks such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. In 2011 the Rockies organization elected to complete a series of improvements to the already highly regarded ballpark. This development effort included the addition of the Camarena Loft, a high-end restaurant located in the right field deck concourse. Complete with high-end natural stone accents and stunning views of downtown Denver flanked by the Rocky Mountains, Camarena Loft offered a unique setting to watch a baseball game. In order to compliment the artistic design of the open air restaurant, the Rockies sought after a decorative flooring system that would not only be aesthetically appealing but also durable enough to withstand heavy traffic within an exterior environment. The installation contractor, Denver Decorative Concrete selected HP Spartacote’s Sparta-Stain™ high performance polyaspartic flooring system after consulting with the Colorado Rockies and the General Contractor, Mortenson Construction of Denver. Installation Specifics: Initially, the existing concrete floor was ground to properly open the concrete for optimal coating adhesion. With the floor prepped, the contractor installed a sand-beige Sparta-Flex® polyaspartic prime coat. A second coat of Sparta-Flex® Clear was then rolled out and two colors of Abstract Dye™ were sprayed directly into the wet coating. Beltre's two-out double in the eighth inning Wednesday drove home Ian Desmond with the go-ahead run, and the Rangers held on for a 6-5 victory over the Reds at Great American Park. "That was a great one to win," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "We needed a feel-good win going home. I'm not saying it was the greatest played game, but an incredible effort by all our guys." The Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak and now have a 6 1/2-game lead in the American League West with 35 to play. Despite the loss, the Reds finished 6-4 on their 10-game homestand. Desmond started the rally when he was hit by a pitch from right-handed reliever Blake Wood, and he stole second. Carlos Beltran flied out to center, but Beltre snapped an 0-for-10 skid with a double to right-center. Darvish hit his first Major League home run, but otherwise struggled in six innings.
