II While the ZDX may have plenty of pulse-quickening power, the first priority of Acura engineers was to ensure that it is delivered as efficiently as possible. Utilizing Acura’s signature VTEC® technology, the 3.7-liter, 300-hp engine employs two separate cam profiles to optimize both low-end torque and high-end horsepower. Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH‑AWD®) helps ensure that none of that potential is wasted. Sensing where extra torque is needed, this system distributes power between the front and rear wheels, and in turns, can even send 100% of available rear power to the outside wheel and increase its rotation speed for tighter cornering.

The rating system is based on research by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) indicating that forward collision warning and automatic braking systems are helping drivers avoid front-to-rear crashes. The Institute rates models with optional or standard front crash prevention systems as superior, advanced or basic depending on whether they offer autonomous braking, or autobrake, and, if so, how effective it is in tests at 12 and 25 mph. Vehicles rated superior have autobrake and can avoid a crash or substantially reduce speeds in both tests. For an advanced rating a vehicle must have autobrake and avoid a crash or reduce speeds by at least 5 mph in 1 of 2 tests. To earn a basic rating, a vehicle must have a forward collision warning system that meets National Highway Traffic Safety Administration performance criteria.

  • HLDI Bulletin | Vol 29, No
Bulletin Vol. 29, No. 23 : December 2012 Volvo City Safety loss experience – an update An earlier study reported that Volvo XC60s fitted with City Safety, a low-speed collision avoidance technology, had lower than expected loss frequencies for property damage liability (-27 percent), bodily injury liability (-51 percent) and collision (-22 percent). Updated results for the XC60 as well as initial results for the Volvo S60 confirm that City Safety is reducing losses substantially, although the effects are somewhat smaller than in the initial XC60 report. In the new study, property damage liability loss frequency was estimated to be 15 percent lower than relevant control vehicles for the XC60 and 16 percent lower for the S60. Collision frequencies were reduced by an estimated 20 percent for the XC60 and 9 percent for the S60. Both vehicles also showed reductions in collision claim severity and reductions in overall losses for collision and property damage liability. Under bodily injury liability, frequency was 33 percent lower for the XC60 and 18 percent lower for the S60. Introduction This Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) bulletin provides an updated look at the effects of Volvo’s City Safety tech- nology on insurance losses for the XC60. It also provides an initial look at the results for the S60, newly equipped with City Safety. Prior HLDI results found that Volvo’s City Safety system on the XC60 appeared to be preventing crashes (Vol. 28, No. 6). For this bulletin the loss experiences for Volvo XC60s and S60s equipped with City Safety were com- pared with losses for comparable vehicles without the system.

  • Acura ZDX 2010
2010 ACURA ZDX Starting with the platform and mechanical components of the MDX, Honda has created a “crossover utility vehicle with personal sports coupe styling”, meaning in fact that the ZDX is designed to accommodate two adults and their belongings. The ZDX is a bit longer (4.3 cm) and, especially, lower (13.7 cm) than the MDX. Its dimensions are the same as those of its two main competitors, the BMW X6 and Infiniti FX, except for height, which is lower. The ZDX is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 and equipped with the SH-AWD all-wheel-drive system. Interior and cargo area This being a low vehicle with very wide doorsills, access to the front is difficult for tall people. The front seats are very comfortable but would be even more comfortable if we could adjust the angle of the rear of the cushion. Practically any driver can find a pleasing driving position. Legroom is good, but headroom is limited for tall people. Access to the rear is even worse than to the front because of the sharp rake of the roof and a lack of space between the seat cushion and B-pillar. The bench seat can accommodate two adults, who’ll find the comfort just average because of the low seat cushion. Legroom is good, but headroom is tight, even for someone of average height. The seatback is split 60/40 and both sides fold flat to the floor, leaving a gap behind the front seats wide enough for a pet to tumble in.
