Made nationally popular by NPR’s The Moth (which hosts a monthly event at the Painted Bride in Philadelphia), a story slam brings volunteer audience members on stage to tell true personal stories based on a common theme, which is made known prior to the slam. At the start of the participatory event, anyone interested in telling a story places their name in the hat. The host pulls ten names at random throughout the show, and each person called gets on stage to tell a true, five-minute story without props or notes. The slam is also a competition, judged by three volunteer audience members. All audience members also fill out their own scorecards, which are averaged to find the Audience Favorite. Despite it being a competition, the slams are inclusive and off-the-cuff and informal—no previous experience or skills are needed. Registration limited to 80.
