THE FUTURISTIC AND INNOVATIVE CHANGES IN INDIAN Dr.Amanpreet Kaur Kang Asst. professor Music vocal, GGS Khalsa College for Women Jhar Sahib Ludhiana

There is no society on earth without music. Music is a vehicle of religious , social and symbolic life .Different theories opinions inferences concerning origin of music, developed from time to time .But these cannot be supported fully although there remains some clues information about music. But one thing is sure that concept and consciousness of music is not recent. it is supposed that after the recognition of Udat, Anudat and swarit other four swaras were recognized then come into existence. It is creativity of human beings to discover various melodious tunes from these seven swaras. These creative humans discovered the passage of freedom self realization and peace by making musical sounds. Music also appeared as a medium of expression and also as a special language. A number of rages were formed out of seven swaras. The is supreme and is gradual unfolding the subject of classical Hindustani music presentation. Compositions or are based upon the twin concept of raga and tala Indian Music’s unique gift to the World. Today Indian music is best represented by the farm Khayal which came into its own by mid eighteenth century when the popularity of form began to wave steadily after having enjoyed the status of primary form of main stage vocal classical music for over three hundred years. With the Mughal invasion innovations took place in Indian music. For example as Dhrupad gayan shelly got replaced by Khayal Gayan Shelly. In the Shade of Creating Some new Style of Singing which is easier than Dhrupad Khayal Gayan Shelly was Invented .A singer could explain the raag as much as he could according to his nature and imagination. It is said that Khayal style of singing was started from the Regime of Mohammad Shah Rangeele and professional singers started adopting this style of singing. There Fore, Even though Steeped in tradition Hindustani Art, Music has nevertheless been a “living” from that has shaped itself over the centuries imbibing the aesthetic sensibilities of the changing times Towards the closing decades of the nineteenth century the Hindustani Musical scene has touched a variable low from the social cultural educational points of view. The social status and prestige of the musician had gone down. However this chaotic condition to be darkness before the dawn. Not only in the scientific, spiritual and cultural spheres including music, had great thinkers and dynamic personalities started making their appearance. Through the passage of time has been traversing to the west. Pt. RaviShankar who has dedicated his honest efforts to popularize Indian classical music in the west will be admitted by all.today’s Indian classical Music is the result of hard effort of Indian Classical Musicians and Musicologists Following innovation are possible in Indian music

Think beyond It is possible to think beyond gharanas : means a school or a style of khayal singing it can be more innovative by combining innovation with tradition.. Thus are born newer styles so important to the introduction of variety crucial to breaking monotony and the developmental growth of the art itself. As a writer suggest “….. a fades out of existence it its followers do not make new additions to it ….” and there are possibilities of new style of khayal singings in book, “Indian Musical Traditions”. Writers has discussed the possibilities of a happy blending of established styles which is already become the order of the day. These ecclectic styles could combine the most appealing features of even more than two gharanas and synthesise them into a homogenous whole. Infact, the possibilities are endless as each individual is capable of founding his or her unique style through assimilation of existing styles and making individual inputs to invent a new one. Intermingling of style of singing Intermingling two styles of singing is the need of the day like adopting khayal style in singing. As well as adopting classical style in folk music. Here Shubha Mudgal is an apt example. Therefore exchanging stylistic notes between two old styles is a continuous process. Influence of harmony Eventhough Indian classical music is not directly influenced by harmony or western music yet if we play the basic chords Sa Ma Sa Ga Pa is melodious swar samvad when played together are called harmony in western music . These days musicians in are working on harmony very commonly.in youth festivals we see that composers of Indian group songs tries to use as much as harmony into their compositions. The more harmony the more tougher composition is considered to be. Fusion of Folk and western music Today audience in India loves to listen fusion based music .so many renowned folk singers when accompanied by western instruments get overwhelming response from the listeners. Coke studio ,a programme being telecasted on Mtv channel is a beautiful example of it. Singers representing folk music of different states create magical influence with western instruments and folk instruments as well. Impact of Electronic gadgets Electronic gadgets are being used by musicians like use of micro phone even a whisper becomes audible .The human voice has a technique of training and execution adopted to the various systems of music. The gadgets unfamiliar to Indian music, dynamics or volume control also crept in. Thus the mike could be effectively used to engineer sound by manipulating its texture, timbre and volume as a result of which musicians could produce a wide range of sounds be they broad and bold, rounded or pointed, open, guttural whispery, husky, very low and very soft. Using Different instruments Usage of instruments was not very common in ancient era. Even singers can produce various sounds by their own so instrument were not considered to be essential need .But instrumental music has made rapid advancement developing for itself a strikingly distinct style which taps the inherent capabilities of the

instrument concerned to great advantage. in vocal music is fairly common these days and clearly denote the vocalist’s eagerness to cash in on the magic of the instrumental musician’s new wizardry. Fusion of two different Region Music India has different regions like north n south region northern region follow classical music while southern music called .it can also be used together to create an great impact or innovative music like in case of film music a song in movie padosan is perfect example of it”ik chatur naar” which blend carnatic and classical music well. SOME INNOVATIVE IDEAS Even though some amount of harmonisation has crept into the use of classical music pieces used in band and film genres which have no real distinctive formula or grammar and depend out and out upon the creative blending of various forms and genres, I do not see it encroaching upon the pure classical performance for the very reason that harmonization is detrimental to the concept of raga one of the example of mixing classical music with western music is from todays renowned musician AR Rehman how beautiful he blends Sufism with western music in Songs like “Khwawaja mere Khawaja “ and Piya Haji Ali” based application of notes and note phrases. I am afraid that if so done the raga will be reduced to mere scale. However, certain novelties in recent trends are perhaps in the offing and also inevitable. How acceptable these will be in the long run remains to be seen as also their impact upon the future development of Indian art music. Here are certain points which I want to ponder likewise 1. It is an innovation to combine two like Puria And becomes puria kalyan Singers like Pt. presented beautifully in their compositions. And Raag Puria Dhanasari used in Film Music by AR Rehman In “Hey Rama” Song From movie Rangeela. It becomes very Hummable Song for audience 2. By presenting Indian classical music on thickened background sound screen it means it is not necessary that IndiaN traditional Or classical Music is accompanied by a two swaras tuned it can use multi swara swarmandal or any other instruments like and too. 3.Bandishes can be bit short considering the lack of free time in today’s fast world there is a section of listeners who tend to think that lengthy, ponderous delineations alone do justice to a raga without realizing that not every raga is meant for or capable of such treatment. 4. Owing to the need of the present situation where it is forced to compete with all sorts of catchy, audio visually stimulating classical Indian musicians. We just might have to think about newer presentation techniques without interfering with its Traditional vocabulary. 5.Singing one in more than one Talas can create magic into performer’s presentation eg: A Bandish which is Sung in teen taala can be sung in Kehrawa at the end because the speed and nature of Kehrawa puts a new flavor into the Bandish. Like this other Talas can be used for this type of experiments. 6.Combination of folk and classical music is another innovative Idea in the field of Film Music these days.Likewise how smartly uses it in his Films Like in Devdas Bengali folk with classical, in Ramleela Gujrati folk and classical and last but not the least in Bajirao Mastani he used Marathi folk music with classical music. He has always been successful in these innovative efforts.

Even though Indian music has over the decades and centuries, has faced many encroachments be they from film music, pop, folk, Western, regional or Carnatic, instrumental music or science and technology, these encroachments have only been peripheral or at a superficial level. Innovation in classical Music in today’s context lies in trying out new things relevant to present day conditions without deviating from its basics and by keeping its own true spirit.
