Natural Heritage Papillose Nut-sedge & Endangered Species Scleria pauciflora Muhl. ex Willd. Program www.mass.gov/nhesp State Status: Endangered Federal Status: None Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife DESCRIPTION: Papillose Nut-sedge is a slender, perennial species in the Sedge family (Cyperaceae). Stems arise from short, branched, knotty rhizomes with fibrous roots. Plants are 10 to 50 cm tall, forming small clumps with numerous bluish-green leaves (1–2.5 mm wide) and 3 to 10 flowering culms. A larger number of flowering culms may develop after fire. Flowering culms often have a solitary terminal inflorescence that is sessile and subtended by a leafy bract, and a second short- Papillose Nut-sedge fruiting culm, with white achene covered with stalked inflorescence lower on the stem. The scales are warty projections (left), and characteristic cespitose (clumped) ovate. Achenes (dry, one-seeded fruits) are 1 to 2.5 mm growth form (right). Macrolepidoptera Inventory of the Chilcotin District Aud I. Fischer – Biologist Jon H. Shepard - Research Scientist and Crispin S. Guppy – Research Scientist January 31, 2000 2 Abstract This study was undertaken to learn more of the distribution, status and habitat requirements of B.C. macrolepidoptera (butterflies and the larger moths), the group of insects given the highest priority by the BC Environment Conservation Center. The study was conducted in the Chilcotin District near Williams Lake and Riske Creek in central B.C. The study area contains a wide variety of habitats, including rare habitat types that elsewhere occur only in the Lillooet-Lytton area of the Fraser Canyon and, in some cases, the Southern Interior. Specimens were collected with light traps and by aerial net. A total of 538 species of macrolepidoptera were identified during the two years of the project, which is 96% of the estimated total number of species in the study area. There were 29,689 specimens collected, and 9,988 records of the number of specimens of each species captured on each date at each sample site. A list of the species recorded from the Chilcotin is provided, with a summary of provincial and global distributions. The habitats, at site series level as TEM mapped, are provided for each sample. A subset of the data was provided to the Ministry of Forests (Research Section, Williams Lake) for use in a Flamulated Owl study. A voucher collection of 2,526 moth and butterfly specimens was deposited in the Royal BC Museum. There were 25 species that are rare in BC, with most known only from the Riske Creek area. -

2018 ANNUAL REPORT MOTHS & BUTTERFLIES OF GRIZZLY PEAK PRESERVE: Inventory Results from 2018 Prepared and Submi�ed by: DANA ROSS (Entomologist/Lepidoptera Specialist) Corvallis, Oregon SUMMARY The Grizzly Peak Preserve was sampled for butterflies and moths during May, June and October, 2018. A grand total of 218 species were documented and included 170 moths and 48 butterflies. These are presented as an annotated checklist in the appendix of this report. Butterflies and day-flying moths were sampled during daylight hours with an insect net. Nocturnal moths were collected using battery-powered backlight traps over single night periods at 10 locations during each monthly visit. While many of the documented butterflies and moths are common and widespread species, others - that include the Western Sulphur (Colias occidentalis primordialis) and the noctuid moth Eupsilia fringata - represent more locally endemic and/or rare taxa. One geometrid moth has yet to be identified and may represent an undescribed (“new”) species. Future sampling during March, April, July, August and September will capture many more Lepidoptera that have not been recorded. Once the site is more thoroughly sampled, the combined Grizzly Peak butterfly-moth fauna should total at least 450-500 species. INTRODUCTION The Order Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) is an abundant and diverse insect group that performs essential ecological functions within terrestrial environments. As a group, these insects are major herbivores (caterpillars) and pollinators (adults), and are a critical food source for many species of birds, mammals (including bats) and predacious and parasitoid insects. With hundreds of species of butterflies and moths combined occurring at sites with ample habitat heterogeneity, a Lepidoptera inventory can provide a valuable baseline for biodiversity studies. -

Rigid Flax Linum medium (Planch.) Britt. var. texanum (Planch.) Fern State Status: Threatened Federal Status: None Description: Rigid Flax is a perennial herb of the flax family (Linaceae), with yellow five-petaled flowers borne on stiff, ascending branches. Plants grow 2 to 7 dm (~8– 28 in.) in height. The flower petals are 4 to 8 mm long. The styles are distinct (i.e., not united at the base). The sepals are imbricate, and the inner ones have teeth with bulbous glandular tips along their edges. Leaves are entire, lance-shaped, and up to 2.5 cm (1 in.) long with the largest leaves towards the base of the plant. The upper leaves are alternate and usually have pointed tips, while those of the lowest nodes are opposite and blunt tipped. The sepals persist long after the petals have withered and subtend the small (2 mm), dry seed capsules. The species is most often found growing in barren, disturbed areas on sterile soil. Aids to identification: • Plants with stiffly ascending branches • Densely leaved with 30 to 70 leaves below the inflorescence • Lowest leaves opposite; upper leaves alternate • Seed capsules more-or-less spherical with a flattened top • Inner sepals with glandular teeth • Most easily identified when fruit are present Similar species: Four yellow-flowered Linum species that might be mistaken for Rigid Flax occur in Massachusetts. Grooved Yellow Flax (L. sulcatum var. sulcatum) differs from the other three in that it is an annual and its styles are united at the base. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Dietrich Illinois Natural History Survey, 1816 S Oak St., Champaign, IL 21820; phone (217) 244-7408 IDNR Project Manager: John Buhnerkempe Effective Dates: 03/01/2007-02/28/2012 Introduction Insects are the most diverse class of animals included on the Illinois list of Species in Greatest Need of Conservation (SGNC). The exact number of insect species native to Illinois is unknown, but certainly exceeds 30,000. Although precise data on long-term population trends are available for relatively few insect species, recent surveys by Panzer and colleagues in the Chicago metropolitan area (Panzer et al. 1995) indicated that ca. 13% of the prairie-inhabiting insect species originally recorded from the region have been extirpated. A more recent general insect sampling program, part of the Critical Trends Assessment Project at the Illinois Natural History Survey, has shown that declines in the state’s insect fauna have paralleled those observed for birds, reptiles and amphibians, and vascular plants. This sampling, conducted over the past 15 years, indicates that “typical” (i.e., poor quality) grasslands and wetlands collectively support less than 30% of the species originally recorded from such habitats in Illinois (Dietrich 2009). Published data on long-term trends in insect populations are available only for a few pest species. For species not considered to be of economic importance, the most extensive historical data available are those associated with specimens deposited in insect collections. The insect collection of the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), which houses specimens accumulated over the past 150+ years, is the largest and oldest repository of information on the insect fauna of Illinois.
