[email protected] ABSTRACT Types and their location of deposit are provided for taxa of subtribe Gonolobinae (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) in the West Indies. The following fourteen taxa are lectotypified: Gonolobus bayatensis Urb., G. broadwayae Schltr., G. ciliatus Schltr., G. dictyopetalus Urb. & Ekman, G. ekmanii Urb., G. nipensis Urb., G. sintenisii Schltr., G. tigrinus Griseb., G. tobagensis Urb., G. variifolius Schltr., Ibatia mollis Griseb., Poicilla costata Urb., Poicilla tamnifolia Griseb., and Poicillopsis crispiflora Urb. Gonolobus grenadensis Schltr. is neotypified. A new name and a new combination in Matelea Aubl. are respectively proposed for Jacaima parvifolia Proctor and J. costata (Urb.) Rendle var. goodfriendii Proctor. RESUMEN Se aportan tipos y su localización de taxa de la subtribu Gonolobinae (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) en las Indias Occidentales. Pham & Kloppenb. is described and illustrated. The molecular data is provided; this species was found in Dak Lak province, southern Vietnam. Diagnostic features of the new species are a milky latex lithophytic vine and pure white with red-purple centre flowers. The described species clearly differs from closely related H. hainanensis in number of characters: a leaf blade shortly attenuated and wavy margins at the base, a hairy abaxial leaf surface, a bigger calyx with few sparse hairs or glabrous, a bigger corolla with acute lobe, shorter pollinia, as well as molecular characters. -

P1-33BEL-000177 – Final Report FINAL REPORT NAMIBIA BBI SSFA April 2020 Development of Institutional Synergy to Enable Inventorying and Cultivation of Priority Species for Conservation in the Southern Africa Region: Medicinal Plants in the Apocynaceae Family The overall objective of this Project is to foster long-term cooperation between key and relevant Institutions in Southern Africa on addressing the unsustainable exploitation of medicinal plants in the Region. The initial focus is a group of plants in the Apocynaceae family that recently became popular in northern Namibia. The project endeavours to i) Conduct traditional and molecular-based taxonomic work to clarify the identity and phylogeny of the targeted species, ii) Contribute to an existing public DNA sequence database (e.g. NCBI), iii) Establish propagation initiatives to reduce pressure on the wild resource, and iv) Develop policy to accord the targeted species legal protection in Namibia and other range states. i) and ii) constitute the immediate Project objectives to which this CBD Bio-Bridge Initiative Small-Scale Funding contributes, through six key activities. All six activities were successfully implemented over the period March 2019 – March 2020, as detailed in the following report: 1. Outline in detail the activities implemented during the Project. Activity 1: Collection trip to northern Namibia – Herbarium voucher specimens of the targeted plants and leaf samples for molecular analysis will be collected from various sites in northern Namibia. Feedback: Herbarium plant specimens, leaf samples as well as soil samples were collected from 85 sites across nine Namibian regions in March – April 2019 (see Collection sites 2019 in “Report_BBI Namibia”). -

Br., one of the most important medicinal plants of the Asclepiadaceae family, is a herb distributed throughout the World, predominantly in tropical countries. The plant, widely used for the treatment of diabetes and as a diuretic in Indian proprietary medicines, possesses beneficial digestive, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and anti-helmentic effects. Furthermore, it is believed to be useful in the treatment of dyspepsia, constipation, jaundice, hemorrhoids, cardiopathy, asthma, bronchitis and leucoderma. A literature survey revealed that some other notable pharmacological activities of the plant such as anti-obesity, hypolipidemic, antimicrobial, free radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory properties have been proven too. -

Despite the com- plex floral structure of the Asclepiadoideae, self-pollination is known for the genera Vincetoxicum WOLF and Tylophora R. BR., highly derived gen- era of the tribe Asclepiadeae. The hypothesis that self-pollination is an important prerequisite for the invasive character of some Vincetoxicum species in USA and Canada has been put forward (LUMER & YOST 1995). In addition, indigenous herbivores probably avoid Vincetoxicum for its alka- loids, which are absent from other American Asclepiadoideae. Sapro- myiophily is the most frequent mode of pollination, and has been evolved at least three times independently in Periplocoideae, Asclepiadoideae- Ceropegieae and Asclepiadoideae-Asclepiadeae-Gonolobinae. The compo- sition of various scent bouquets associated with sapromyiophily has been analyzed and four different main compositions have been identified (JÜR- GENS & al. 2006). -

SOME MAJOR FAMILIES AND GENERA OF SUCCULENT PLANTS Including Natural Distribution, Growth Form, and Popularity as Container Plants Daniel L. Mahr There are 50-60 plant families that contain at least one species of succulent plant. By far the largest families are the Cactaceae (cactus family) and Aizoaceae (also known as the Mesembryanthemaceae, the ice plant family), each of which contains about 2000 species; together they total about 40% of all succulent plants. In addition to these two families there are 6-8 more that are commonly grown by home gardeners and succulent plant enthusiasts. The following list is in alphabetic order. The most popular genera for container culture are indicated by bold type. Taxonomic groupings are changed occasionally as new research information becomes available. But old names that have been in common usage are not easily cast aside. Significant name changes noted in parentheses ( ) are listed at the end of the table.
