  • Najib's Fork-Tongue Shows Again: Umno Talks of Rejuvenation Yet Oldies Get Plum Jobs at Expense of New Blood
NAJIB'S FORK-TONGUE SHOWS AGAIN: UMNO TALKS OF REJUVENATION YET OLDIES GET PLUM JOBS AT EXPENSE OF NEW BLOOD 11 February 2016 - Malaysia Chronicle The recent appointments of Tan Sri Annuar Musa, 59, as Umno information chief, and Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, 65, as Kedah menteri besar, have raised doubts whether one of the oldest parties in the country is truly committed to rejuvenating itself. The two stalwarts are taking over the duties of younger colleagues, Datuk Ahmad Maslan, 49, and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, 51, respectively. Umno’s decision to replace both Ahmad and Mukhriz with older leaders indicates that internal politics trumps the changes it must make to stay relevant among the younger generation. In a party where the Youth chief himself is 40 and sporting a greying beard, Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has time and again stressed the need to rejuvenate itself and attract the young. “Umno and Najib specifically have been saying about it (rejuvenation) for quite some time but they lack the political will to do so,” said Professor Dr Arnold Puyok, a political science lecturer from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. “I don’t think Najib has totally abandoned the idea of ‘peremajaan Umno’ (rejuvenation). He is just being cautious as doing so will put him in a collision course with the old guards.” In fact, as far back as 2014, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said older Umno leaders were unhappy with Najib’s call for rejuvenation as they believed it would pit them against their younger counterparts. He said the “noble proposal” that would help Umno win elections could be a “ticking time- bomb” instead.

  • (Bernama) -- the Floods in Pulau Pinang Have Become Worse Over
Floods In Pulau Pinang Get Worse Since DAP Takes Over Power - Annuar BERNAMA 09/11/2017 KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- The floods in Pulau Pinang have become worse over the years since DAP took over the state's administration in 2008, said UMNO Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa. Ironically, he said the opposition party often boasted about how they were doing far better than Barisan Nasional (BN). "If we go back to Dec 15, 2013, (we could see that) Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was so arrogant when he said that they (state government) could solve flood problems within a single term." "So was Tanjong state assemblyman, Ng Wei Aik, who issued a statement in 2008 that they could do it in just nine months...but look at what is happening now," Annuar was quoted as saying in an article published by UMNO Online here today. He said the issue of floods was not just the only proof that Penang had been a failed state under the DAP administration. In fact, the recent landslide incident in Tanjung Bungah which claimed 11 lives was also one of the evidence that showed the state government's greed for development and profit, which only spelled disaster for the people, Annuar said. "Guan Eng should be grateful that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, have shown their big hearts by putting aside political differences for the sake of helping the people in the state. "Such a trait was also emulated by all BN leaders and its machinery who came to help the flood victims.

  • UMNO Factionalism and the Politics of Malaysian National Identity
UMNO Factionalism and The Politics Of Malaysian National Identity JAE HYON LEE This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2005 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. .................................. Abstract This thesis analyses UMNO factionalism from the perspective of the elite’s manipulation of the various modes of nationalisms. This thesis argues that UMNO factionalism, which is seemingly a power struggle between competing UMNO elites, has been significantly shaped by contesting nationalist ideologies that reflect the unresolved questions of national identity in Malaysia. These two issues, that is, nationalism and UMNO factionalism, have shaped Malaysian politics in significant ways. UMNO factionalism has been related to such major political events as the 1969 ethnic riots, the introduction of the New Economic Policy, the UMNO split in 1987 and the Reformasi (Reform) movement in 1998. Frequently, the impact of these disputes extended beyond UMNO politics and affected wider Malaysian politics. At the same time, due to unresolved questions of national identity, nationalism has occupied a central position in Malaysian political discourse. There are ambiguities regarding the relationships among the various ethnic identities and national identity and between the individual and the larger Malaysian community that enable elites to construct and manipulate nationalist ideologies. In this thesis, the conflicting nationalisms are captured by five different concepts of nationalism – ethnocultural, civic and multicultural nationalisms in one group and collectivist-authoritarian and individualistic-libertarian nationalisms in another.
