Kindheit Was mich einigermaßen berechtigt, meine Erlebnisse mitzuteilen, ist der Umstand, daß ich mit vielen interessanten und hervorragenden Zeitgenossen zusammengetroffen und daß meine Anteilnahme an einer Bewegung, die sich allmählich zu historischer Tragweite herausgewachsen hat, mir manchen Einblick in das politische Getriebe unserer Zeit ge- währte und daß ich im ganzen also wirklich Mitteilenswertes zu sagen habe. Freilich müßte ich, wenn ich nur über diese Epoche meines Lebens berichten wollte, mich auf die Geschichte der letzten fünfzehn bis zwanzig Jahre beschränken und ganz darauf verzichten, Bilder aus meiner Jugend heraufzubeschwören, und müßte es mir versagen, die persönlichen Erinnerungen aufzuzeichnen, welche mein ganzes wechselvolles Leben in mein Gedächtnis geprägt hat. Das will ich mir aber nicht versagen. Wenn ich schon des erwähnten Umstandes halber mich bewegen ließ, meine Memoiren zu schreiben, so soll daraus ein wirkliches Lebensbuch werden. Noch einmal sollen die Stationen der langen Reise vor meinem inneren Auge der Reihe nach auftauchen und davon auf diesen Blättern photographiert werden, was mir zur Wiedergabe geeignet erscheint. Also ohne weitere Einleitung zum Anfang: Der Anfang alles Menschenlebens ist die Geburt. Wo und wann und in welchem Milieu ich zur Welt gekommen bin, besagt am zuverlässigsten mein Taufschein. Hier ist die Kopie des Dokumentes: »Taufschein. ad W. E. 200. Aus der Geburts- und Taufmatrik der Pfarre St. Maria-Schnee, Lib. Sherman) Between 1910 and 1940 in France, the ideal of motherhood fueled important political decisions, promoted dreams of a powerful nation, and defined French women’s roles as citizens. Within this context, visual images played a key role in reinforcing motherhood’s centrality to French cultural identity by distilling a range of values into readily accessible and widely distributed representations. Historical and art-historical studies that have addressed the role played by visual imagery for the most part reinforce the conventional tie between representations of mothers and themes of self-sacrifice, patriotism, and especially tradition. Yet between 1910 and 1940, much as today, motherhood embodied more than these conventional tropes. Representations of mother figures also actively participated in the construction of highly complex cultural identities and even modernity.
