Leonard Cohen Interview Broadcast on CBC Radio. 1984. Interviewers: Patricia Keeney and Robert Sward INT: You’ve just released your new album, Various Positions. The range of styles you bring into your music is quite amazing. Some of the pieces have a folk feel, others a spiritual quality and still others a very anxious, uneasy feel. How do the styles emerge? Do you write the lyrics in conjunction with the music? What’s the process? COHEN: Well, it’s not a deluxe operation. One is just trying to finish a song and when you’re not trying to finish a song you’re trying to start one. The form just seems to indicate itself at some point but it’s always just scraping the bottom of the barrel. Sometimes you fall upon a chord change that seems to evoke something and a word or two clings to it. Then you need a resolution of the phrase and a word or a chord comes and that seems to work. It’s a very rag- picking kind of operation. INT: There’s a very definite iambic meter to many of your poems and songs. COHEN: I think that’s the way we talk. The ordinary rhythm of ballads and songs is that simple way of speaking. The first song on Various Positions has an eastern European flavor, a marriage song. The second one has a country and western feel and there is a steel guitar, The third has a reference to reggae and the fourth is a traditional ballad where the whole story is told. -

One of the main conditions that allowed this culture to emerge is the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters and Sciences (1949-51). As a result, the Canadian government strengthened cultural policy and developed the Canada Council for the Arts to support cultural production. In 1958, Cohen was a recipient of the new Canada Council Junior Arts Fellowships. Using the celebrity phenomenon of Cohen as my object of research, this dissertation asks: How is the discourse of celebrity constructed in Canada from the mid-twentieth century to the early decades of the twenty-first century? Developing a discursive analysis, I illuminate how we talk about celebrity in Canada at certain socio-historical moments and portray Canada as a nation ambivalent about celebrity. -

Still Waiting for the Miracle A review of Ira B. Nadel, Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen (1996; 2006) Written for the Leonard Cohen Files by Doron B. Cohen For Tom Sakic, a hundred floors above me In the tower of LC scholarship A truly satisfying biography of Leonard Cohen has not been written yet. Among several unsatisfactory attempts, Ira B. Nadel’s Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen is probably the most successful effort, and most readable account. However, the book is plagued by various frustrating problems that cause it to be considerably less useful, captivating or authoritative than the book it might have been. And, unfortunately, ten years after its first publication it was reissued with only a short new afterword, rather than undergoing the thorough overhaul it required. The book was first published in 1996, by Random House in Canada, and by Pantheon Books in the United States, as well as by Bloomsbury Paperbacks in the UK in 1997. It was reissued, with the new afterword, in 2006 by Vintage in Canada, and in 2007 by University of Texas Press, Austin, in the series “Jewish History, Life and Culture” (in paperback). The book has also been translated into German, French, Polish, Croatian and Japanese – an indication of Cohen’s global appeal, and of the need felt for such a biography. Following a short introduction, Nadel begins his story with a relatively extensive background of Cohen’s family and roots in the Jewish community of Montreal. He goes on to portray Cohen’s first steps as a poet and musician, his student years, his life on Hydra, his drug habits, women, children (very briefly), and his life-long commitment to both his Jewish tradition and the practice of Zen. -

The Anniversary to release new album... sort of The other night I decided to get out some of my favorite records, one of them being American Music Where's the great pop song of Club's Mercury -- which is probably my favorite album of the 90s -- to refresh the palette for all the the summer? new music I'm listening to. As I listened to the 1993 black-heart gem of Mark Eitzel's relational Rumblings of Neumo's entropy, wondering if any single record ever had that many great lyrics, I suddenly started hearing the changes melody to Leonard Cohen's "In My Secret Life" massaging my disintegrating memory. Super group rumor Sunday night? So I got out the album that opens with that track, Ten New Songs, which I would never have thought Flickr photo of the day: Tapes to call my favorite album of THIS decade. When it came out a few years ago, I thought the lyric sheet 'N Tapes was excellent, but had pretty much given up on the light Casio-driven folk-funk Our Moody Doomed Last chance to win tix to SIFF Father of Love Song persisted in recording. But listening to Ten New Songs immediately against Eitzel's Cinema's UA series! genius song cycle, a record that had gotten me through at least one blue-black year, and I realized I Today's greatest tweet ever am now old enough, have matured enough to accept where Cohen has been going (musically). -

ABSTRACT This dissertation thesis arose from thinking about literary tradition as described by the Anglo-American modernists Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot. In their view, the tradition of European love-lyrics crystallised in the work of the medieval Occitan troubadours who were influenced by the cultural and political milieu of the contemporary Occitanie and whose work reflected the religious influences of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The main subject of their poetry was the worship of the divinised feminine character resembling the Christian Virgin Mary, Gnostic Sophia or the ancient Mother Goddess.
