Developing Leaders to Strengthen Our Community 2014-2015 YEARBOOK Letter from the Executive Director Dear Leadership Jacksonville alumni and friends, The cover of our 2014-15 Yearbook displays art from Jacksonville’s gallery of Art in Public Places. Each piece adds to the cultural landscape of our city and those pictured are scattered through unexpected places: the Riverwalk in Riverside, Jacksonville Public Library Downtown Branch, the Baseball Grounds, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission building in the eastside, and a Police Athletic League center on the northside. Our public art is diverse and helps us to establish a visual identity for Jacksonville. The art builds a sense of pride in each community. Our art is an asset. During my first year as your executive director I have seen clearly that one of our greatest community assets is the LJ alumni body. Like the Art in Public Places you are diverse. You are scattered in unexpected places. The work that you do as leaders in your communities makes them better because of your leadership, vision and action. With support from what you have received in your Leadership Jacksonville programs, you are out in the community doing incredible things and you continue to give back by supporting the LJ programs that keep the pipeline of new leaders coming. Thank you for all of the good that you do for your many communities – you are an asset and you make LJ an ever-better organization. Together we are Developing Leaders to Strengthen our Community. Building Community Wealth An action plan for Northwest Jacksonville Submitted to the City of Jacksonville June 2014 (this page intentionally left blank) DEMOCRACY COLLABORATIVE REPORT TO THE CITY OF JACKSONVILLE Building Community Wealth: An Action Plan for Northwest Jacksonville Steve Dubb and David Zuckerman EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Jacksonville Community Wealth Building Roundtable, organized by The Democracy Collaborative at the University of Maryland, is a process that is designed to begin to align local community development efforts, identify gaps, and outline opportunities. A central goal is to develop a targeted strategy that can build resident wealth and create jobs by integrating lower income neighborhoods in Northwest Jacksonville into overall City economic development. This is based on an approach we call Community Wealth Building. The hallmarks of this approach are to: 1) refocus public and private resources to expand individual and family assets, 2) broaden ownership over local capital, 3) restore community banks and other local economic institutions, 4) leverage existing assets (such as nonprofit and public anchor institutions, like hospitals and universities) for local benefit, and 5) return wealth to communities. The roots of our work in Jacksonville can be traced back to a request from ICARE, the Interfaith Coalition for Action, Reconciliation, and Empowerment. They asked that the Mayor consider hosting a Community Wealth Building Roundtable to explore whether this approach might help the City achieve its goals of creating quality jobs with family-supporting wages, while addressing generational poverty and building community wealth in Northwest Jacksonville. Following the initial contact, the Collaborative made an exploratory visit to Jacksonville in September 2012. -

Currently Douglas Milne Leadership Jacksonville has four major programs: Courtenay Wilson Leadership Jacksonville Program John G. McGiffin III * W.A. McGriff Leadership Jacksonville (LJ) is a year-long program that explores the dynamics of an urban Julie Buckingham society, analyzes major areas of community concern, facilitates the development of leadership capacities and promotes a network of community trustees. Developing Leaders to Strengthen Our Community 2013-2014 YEARBOOK Letter from the Executive Director Dear Leadership Jacksonville alumni and friends, A variety of local bridges dominate the cover of this 2013-14 Yearbook. Just as bridges transition us from one side of the mighty St. Johns River to the other, our incredible volunteers and talented staff are transitioning Leadership Jacksonville (LJ) from the successful 12 years of Izzy Spence’s leadership to the term of a new leader. Just as the bridges tie together varied landscapes, our alumni move throughout a diverse community, utilizing their own disparate backgrounds and talents but united by their desire to use their roles as community trustees for the greater good of our community. Like all LJ yearbooks, this year’s book bridges our programs. Additions are New Leadership Summit participants, our Legacy Series, Celebration Honorees, youth scholarship winners, and a list of all LJ volunteers. You will be impressed by the caliber of our program participants and stunned by the number of volunteers who commit to stimulating the growth of leadership in our community. The success of our programs is dependent on the support that we receive from our alumni and the greater community. You annually give your financial support through dues and contributions and, of equal importance, your time through board, committee and program day support, nominating new class members, and mentioning us throughout the community.
