    Chapter # 1 Introduction Mobile applications (apps) have been gaining rising popularity dueto the advances in mobile technologies and the large increase in the number of mobile users. Consequently, several app distribution platforms, which provide a new way for developing, downloading, and updating software applications in modern mobile devices, have recently emerged. To better understand the download patterns, popularity trends, and development strategies in this rapidly evolving mobile app ecosystem, we systematically monitored and analyzed four popular third-party Android app marketplaces. Our study focuses on measuring, analyzing, and modeling the app popularity distribution, and explores how pricing and revenue strategies affect app popularity and developers’ income. Our results indicate that unlike web and peer-to-peer file sharing workloads, the app popularity distribution deviates from commonly observed Zipf-like models. We verify that these deviations can be mainly attributed to a new download pattern, to which we refer as the clustering effect. We validate the existence of this effect by revealing a strong temporal affinity of user downloads to app categories. Based on these observations, we propose a new formal clustering model for the distribution of app downloads, and demonstrate that it closely fits measured data. Moreover, we observe that paid apps follow a different popularity distribution than free apps, and show how free apps with an ad-based revenue strategy may result in higher financial benefits than paid apps. We believe that this study can be useful to appstore designers for improving content delivery and recommendation systems, as well as to app developers for selecting proper pricing policies to increase their income.

This will gives us a better idea of its dimensions and screen menus. The Zune HD is expected to be available the fourth quarter of this year, most likely in September. Microsoft also plans to make improvements to the Zune Marketplace and expand its Zune platform beyond just the US and Canada. © 2009 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) -- It looks like Microsoft's Zune HD player will be a strong competition for Apple's iPod Touch. Uunconfirmed technical specifications of Microsoft's Zune HD player have now emerged and the new portable media player looks like a good contender with Apple's Touch. The Zune HD will feature a multitouch OLED screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and an HDMI TV output port. The Zune HD will be available in a 16 and 32 GB version. Both versions will have wireless support that will allow you to sync the device with a computer. There's also some speculation that the Zune HD may use the Nvidia's Tegra chipset that would support 3D xbox games. There will also be a Web browser incorporated into the player but no word yet as to what browser will be used. There's also speculation that the Zune HD may be running on Windows Mobile 6.5 which is expected to be released Q4, same as the player. Sources have confirmed that the Zune HD is Microsoft's next version of portable media players.

It is also during this event where mobile phone manufacturers unveil their new gadget offerings, accessories or software in an audience that include spectators, fellow manufacturers, smartphone enthusiasts, journalists, mobile phone bloggers and reviewers and many more. For this year’s event, the MWC 2013 was held in Barcelona. Nokia started out its MWC 2013 event by unveiling its latest smartphone offering – the Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 720 which targets the midrange market. Both phones will using the Windows Phone 8 OS and will feature innovative apps like the Nokia Maps and Drive. Here’s a look of each of the two new smartphones: Nokia Lumia 520 Among the Windows Phone 8 devices, Nokia Lumia 520 is the most affordable. The smartphone is being sold using Nokia’s remarkable colours. Lumia works on a 1 – GHz dual – core processor and has a 512 MB of RAM. Its intuitive and responsive touchscreen is a 4-inch WVGA IPS LCD and a 800 x 480 pixel. It doesn’t have a front – facing camera but its rear camera offers 5-megapixel autofocus function and captures 720p video. The phone offers 9.6 hours of maximum 3G-talk, 360 hours maximum 3G standby time and 61- hour playback music. The Nokia Lumia 520 weighs about 124 grams with a thickness of 9.9 mm. The Nokia Lumia 520 is slated to be released on the second quarter of the year.
