AP English Literature & Composition Summer Reading Assignment 2014 AP English Literature & Composition Summer Reading Assignment 2014-2015 Ms. Morgan lmorgan@trschools.com HS East W24 I am so happy you are interested in entering the strange and exciting world of AP Literature! Please realize that the Guidance Department still needs to process all course requests and prerequisite requirements over the summer. Attending this meeting and / or completing the AP Literature Summer Reading Assignment DOES NOT MEAN you are officially in the course yet, nor does it ‘guarantee’ your acceptance, which again is dependent upon your satisfaction of the minimum prerequisites, etc. If you choose to complete the assignment prior to Guidance’s confirmation of your placement in the course – which usually occurs in July – you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK. BUT … if you are accepted … which I certainly hope you will be … then yes, we will work hard. Yes, we will learn a lot. Yes, we will have FUN!! (You might have to trust me on that last one…) First, though, we have to get through the summer. And who wants to lie around on the beach or by the pool when you could be reading great literature? The good news is, you don’t have to make that horrible choice—you can kill two birds with one stone! Your AP Lit assignment for this summer has two parts: (1) The Dastardly Lit Terms— · Study the attached list of literary terms and definitions. They are one among several tickets to the Mystical Land of 5! · Be prepared for a comprehensive vocabulary test in September. That will be one among several tickets to the Mystical Land of A+! (2) The Dastardly Lit (naturally)— · Read two (2) works from the reverse list that you have NOT read before. If you took AP Language last year instead of American Lit, then you MUST include at least one (1) American work among your selections. · Complete a Blue Review Sheet for each work you read. (Don’t lose these! They are more tickets to your desired destination…) · Be prepared to write an extensive literary analysis of both works in September, including the author’s use of literary devices such as symbolism, figurative language (metaphors, similes, etc), sensory imagery (visual as well as the other physical senses), character foils, parallel plotlines, and so on to convey plot, character, and theme development. · DO YOUR OWN INTERPRETIVE WORK! “Easy interpretation” sites (SparkNotes, et al) are NOT ACCEPTABLE sources of academic literary analysis, especially at the AP level. Additionally, working from such sites without crediting them is PLAGIARISM. Copying or submitting the same work as one another is also PLAGIARISM and is NOT ALLOWED. Either action, if detected, will result in not only a 0, but also disciplinary action. Besides, these are the ways of the literary coward.     PETRONIUS AND THE ANATOMY OF FICTION Petronius’ Satyricon, long regarded as the first novel of the western tradition, has always sparked controversy. It has been puzzled over as a strikingly modernist riddle, elevated as a work of exemplary comic realism, condemned as obscene and repackaged as a moral- ity tale. This innovative reading of the surviving portions of the work shows how the Satyricon fuses the anarchic and the classic, the comic and the disturbing, and presents readers with a labyrinth of narratorial viewpoints. Victoria Rimell argues that the surviving fragments are connected by an imagery of disintegration, focused on a pervasive Neronian metaphor of the literary text as a human or animal body. Throughout, she discusses the limits of dominant twentieth-century views of the Satyricon as bawdy pantomime, and challenges prevailing restrictions of Petronian corporeality to mate- rial or non-metaphorical realms. This ‘novel’ emerges as both very Roman and very satirical in its ‘intestinal’ view of reality. is a lecturer in classics at Girton College, Cambridge, and was previously a junior research fellow at Univer- sity College, Oxford. She studied at Cambridge and London and has taught at the Universities of London, Oxford and Cambridge and at the Open University. She also worked as a journalist for two years. Her published work so far has dealt with Roman elegy and satire. This study suggests that disguised symbolism and erudite references rest behind the representation of these seemingly daily objects, which could only be fully understood by members of the Roman cultural elite, who possessed the proper education for the task. The mosaic served as a starting point for the elitist practice of an erudite discourse and as a reminder of the brevity of life. Signed: _________________________________ 2 ABSTRACT My thesis is a narratological analysis of Petronius’ Satyrica, particularly of the first section taking place in South Italy (Petron. 1–99), based on the methodology and terminology of Gérard Genette. There are two main objectives for the present study, which are closely connected to each other. One the one hand, I wish to identify and analyse the narrative characteristics of the Satyrica, including a selection of its literary models and the ways in which they are imitated or transformed and embedded in a new narrative schema, as well as the impact, which those texts that are connected to it have on our interpretation of the work. My narratological investigation of transtextuality in the case of Petronius includes: the assessment of matters of onymity and pseudonymity, rhematic and thematic titles, and the real and implied author in the sections on para-, inter- and metatexts; features belonging to the categories of narrative voice, mood, and time in the section on the narration (‘narrating’) and the récit (‘narrative’); the hypertextual relationships between the Satyrica and a selection of its potential models or sources in the section on the histoire (‘story’); and the architext or genre of the Satyrica.

Wilson: "Ocean Chivalry": Issues of Alterity in Don Quixote "Ocean Chivalry": Issues ofAlterity in Don Quixote By DIANA DE ARMAS WILSON LTHOUGH DON QUIXOTE stridently identifies himself with the fictional fig­ A ures of his favorite books-chivalric heroes such as Lancelot or Amadis or Renaldo de Montalban-he has of late been assimilated, in studies of spiral­ ing scholarly confidence, to the historical figures of the conquistadores. One critic claims that it is easy for the twentieth-century reader to see Don Quixote as "a comic incarnation" of "the conquistador mentality of Golden Age Spain" (Skinner 54). Another calls Cervantes's hero an "aspiring" and even "divinely inspired" conqueror, a figure who embodies "what is great and what is insane about Spanish imperialism" (Higuera 1-2). Such New World axes of identity for Don Quixote are an intrepid development from older constructions, which often used assertion as a mode of argument or, as what follows will show, in­ voked some literally preposterous connections. The aim of this essay is to ex­ plore the state of the union between Don Quixote and the "quixotic" conquista­ dores-all of whom are "other identified" with the heroic figures in the libros de caballerfas [books of chivalry].1 After sampling the representational prac­ tices that hover over this triple interalterity, I shall suggest that Don Quixote not so much "incarnates" or even "aspires to" the conquistador mentality as that he "minlics" it.
