I had just about forgotten about the whole thing the day the envelope arrived from the International Exchange Experience. I didn’t get much mail, and this one I hoped would be good news. I had applied to go on a year of foreign exchange almost six months ago, and I hadn’t heard. I assumed they weren’t taking me. Is this a rejection? I tore open the envelope. “We are pleased to offer you an exchange placement in the country of Genovia.” Was I going? Now questions filled my head. Where the hell was Genovia? Did they speak English there? I got on the computer and pulled up Wikipedia. The map showed the tiny country of Genovia. It was listed as a reasonably affluent country that was at the crossroads of trade for the region. Climate was a bit warmer than home, but not oppressive. It never got really cold there, it appeared. The language was officially English, as a previous leader had decided to westernize his country. However, Genovian was coming back as a source of national pride and children learned both languages in school. I read through the rest of the article on the history, government, economy. There were a few pictures. The country looked pleasant enough. There was a picture of a school. The girls were wearing uniforms of shirts and skirts. The boys wore shorts shorter than fashionable in the US. Either that was just lameness of the uniforms or perhaps due to the warmer weather. Well, the weeks before my departure flew by.

Welcome Letter Hello Dancers! We are very pleased that you are interested in joining us this summer for five weeks of intensive dance training! Please review the following information to become acquainted with our program. CLASS PLACEMENT AND SCHEDULES Pre-Professional Program classes will be held at Milwaukee Ballet’s Baumgartner Center for Dance studios. You will receive the schedule for the first week of classes in early June. Schedules for the remaining weeks will be posted online and at Milwaukee Ballet and the Residence Hall. It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of their schedule and any changes that may occur. A TYPICAL DAY Below is a sample schedule for the program. Actual times may vary by 30-60 minutes depending on specific class schedules for each level. The content and basic outline of the schedule is accurate. Each level takes morning classes taught by the same teacher Monday-Friday. These programs include learn-to-swim classes, water aerobics, open swim opportunities and special events provided by a professional and highly qualified staff. The center offers a 6-lane competition lap pool, a leisure pool, a custom train themed play structure with water slides, several spray/splash features, a small train slide, a large water slide, a concession stand, showers, locker rooms, restrooms, two group pavilions, lots of shade and seating (chairs, chase lounge chairs, picnic tables, etc...), and recreational programs. The following definitions apply: a. Resident: any person who lives within the corporate city limits of the City of Saginaw, Texas and pays taxes and a water bill to the City of Saginaw. b. Toilet Learning at SLC At SLC, we work with parents to potty train their children. Children should remain in pull-ups or in plastic pants over underwear at school until arrangements have been made between the child’s teacher and school director. This is to prevent contamination and the spread of bacteria on the floor and toys in the classrooms from fecal matter. We will follow these steps when potty training children: We will familiarize the child with toileting. We will work toileting into our daily routine (when they arrive at school, after snack time and lunch). We will start transitioning from diapers to pull-ups to underwear as soon as they start telling us that they need to go and when they are comfortable sitting on the potty. We will try taking some of the young children potty with the older children so they can model how ‘big’ kids use the potty. We will use positive words and teach proper hand washing routines. Readiness Signs: Dry diaper for two hour intervals Predictable/regular bowel movements Announces when they have gone or when they are going to the potty Can sit still for several minutes at a time and focus on one activity Can understand simple instructions Is comfortable, not afraid, and willing to sit on the potty Can pull pants up and down Can wash hands with minimal help When children are potty training: Please choose pants that are easy to move up and down. Eliminate overalls and onesies. Have children choose special panties or underwear. Consider using plastic pants over panties/underwear.
