A contractor drilled too far into the roof while preparing to destruct the metal power shop just three days earlier. That night, rain fell and the room was flooded causing water damage in vari- ous places including the roof. The heat- bonding tool became overheated while re- pairing the damage and caught fire. The builder extinguished the fire with his jacket and within five minutes the fire was com- pletely out. D-Wing was completely evacuated and no one was injured. Yellow Ribbon Week On Feb. 4, Neshaminy’s SADD/ SAVE organized a full week for students to celebrate life. After the touching assembly with Dale and Dar Emme last October, the clubs decided to organize daily events throughout the week of Feb. 4-8 to promote the yellow ribbon organization. • {PDF EPUB} Eat This Book a Year of Gorging and Glory on the Competitive Eating Circuit by Alfred Ryan Nerz the Gagging and the Glory
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Eat This Book A Year of Gorging and Glory on the Competitive Eating Circuit by Alfred Ryan Nerz The gagging and the glory. Ryan Nerz spent a year on the competitive eating circuit -- land of therapeutic vomiting, esophagus control and "meat sweats." By Sarah Goldstein. Published April 19, 2006 11:30AM (EDT) Shares. It was while she was working at the Burger King on Andrews Air Force Base in D.C. that Sonya Thomas, an immigrant from South Korea, first got the idea that perhaps her staggering appetite was not an insatiable curse but a gift. Shocking her co-workers, the waifish 38-year-old would throw back 20 chicken nuggets, a Chicken Whopper, three orders of large fries, and a couple of Diet Cokes for her midday meal. It was abundantly clear to anyone who watched Thomas eat that her stomach was made for greatness. And so at the suggestion of friends, Thomas began to enter competitive eating contests. After an incredible first year -- she was named the International Federation of Competitive Eating's rookie of the year in 2003 -- she continued to break IFOCE records: 8.4 pounds baked beans, 2 minutes, 47 seconds; 161 chicken wings, 12 minutes; 11 pounds Downtown Atlantic Cheesecake, 9 minutes. Thomas -- aka The Black Widow -- is just one of the dozens of eaters that Ryan Nerz profiles in "Eat This Book: A Year of Gorging and Glory on the Competitive Eating Circuit," an exhaustive, sometimes disgusting, account of his year as an emcee of eating contests. Eaters range from the 100-pound Thomas to the 6-foot-6-inch, 440-pound New York City subway operator and amateur rapper Eric "Badlands" Booker, to 6-foot-8- inch, 406-pound Ed "Cookie" Jarvis, a successful real estate broker from Long Island.

  • Horsemen of the Esophagus
Horsemen of the Esophagus By Jason Fagone May 2006 Among the super-gluttons, on the front lines of competitive eating Nader sounded the alarm about four “signs of societal decay”: three involved corporate greed and congressional gerrymandering, and the fourth was competitive eating. George Shea responded to Nader by talking up the federation’s “Turducken” contest, which he called “the first real advancement in Thanksgiving since the Indians sat down with the Pilgrims.” Shea’s counterattacks tend to mix deadpan charm and gentle mockery. “A lot of people have had trouble,” he told me when I asked if it was wise to promote gluttony in one of the fatter nations on earth, “separating this superficial visual of people stuffing their faces with large quantities of food with the stereotype of the Ugly American. That is not where I am. I see beauty. I see physical poetry.” Poetry, exactly. Shea’s eating contests are poetic in their blatancy, their brazen mixture of every American trait that seems to terrify the rest of the planet: our hunger for natural resources that may melt the ice caps and flood Europe, our hunger for cheap thrills that turns Muslim swing voters into car bombers. If anti-American zealots anywhere in the world wanted to perform a minstrel show of our culture, this is what they’d come up with. Competitive eating is a symbolic hair ball coughed up by the American id. It is meaningful like a tumor is meaningful. It seems to have a purpose, a message, and its message is this: Look upon our gurgitators, ye Mighty, and despair.
