PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Elihu Abbe THE VALUE OF EMPATHIC LISTENING “There are people who protest that empathic listening takes too much time. It may take a little more time initially but it saves so much time downstream. The most eKcient thing you can do if you’re a doctor and want to prescribe a wise treatment is to make an accurate diagnosis. You can’t say, ‘I’m in too much of a hurry. I don’t have time to make a diagnosis. Just take this treatment.’” (Stephen Covey, The Seven Habits of Highly E@ective People , p. 264) Pharaoh saw two frightening dreams. The verse tells us that “he called together all of his wise men and related his dream to them, and nobody interpreted them to Pharaoh.” (41:8) Rashi explains that the wise men did suggest an interpretation for Pharaoh’s dream (that Pharaoh would have seven daughters who would pass away), but Pharaoh was not satisfied with their interpretation. The wise men and magicians of Egypt were very talented. Why were they unable to successfully interpret Pharaoh’s dream? Both the Kli Yakar and the Or Hachaim note that the verse begins by referring to a singular dream, and ends by referring to both dreams. Perhaps we can suggest that Pharaoh intended to relate both dreams, but was cut short by his wise men. Imagine the situation. These wise men are being honoured with the privilege of standing before the most powerful world leader who is seeking their wisdom and expertise. As soon as Pharaoh relates the first dream, they jump at the opportunity to demonstrate their wisdom, oblivious to the fact that Pharaoh has more to say. Only having heard the dream of the cows, they are unaware of the agricultural component of the dreams. They therefore suggest an interpretation that is unrelated to the true agricultural meaning. When Pharaoh calls in Yosef, he says “I have dreamt a dream.” (41:15) He didn’t tell Yosef that he was planning on sharing two dreams. Yet, after describing the first dream, he immediately proceeds to relate the second dream. Perhaps this is because after relating the first dream, Yosef did not reply. There was a pause of understanding. A pause of empathy. Pharaoh felt heard. He then continued to relate the second dream. Yosef, now aware of the agricultural content of the dreams, with Hashem’s help, was successful in interpreting them accurately. Why did Yosef have the patience to listen to both dreams, while the wise men immediately interrupted to demonstrate their wisdom? When Pharaoh calls the wise men, the Torah tells us that Pharaoh was very agitated. His heart was pounding. Nonetheless, the wise men make no mention of Pharaoh’s suHering. Perhaps they don’t even notice. Yosef, however, says “Elokim will answer for the peace of Pharaoh.” He is aware of Pharaoh’s pain, and he begins by comforting him. Feeling empathy for another person is so essential. With empathy we can have the patience to listen patiently and deeply. Only then can we truly be helpful. Halacha relies upon the opinion of physicians and public health authorities concerning matters of health. The consensus of medical evi- dence supports the vaccination of children in accordance with the established childhood immunization schedule, in order to protect them from illness and disease. Accordingly, the position of major Poskim , including those of our community, supports the vaccina- tion of children according to the Ontario Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule. We hereby state that there is a halachic obligation on parents to vaccinate their healthy children on the timetable recommended by their pediatrician and/or family physician.
