Species Biological Report Neosho Mucket (Lampsilis rafinesqueana) Cover photo: Dr. Chris Barnhart (Missouri State University) Prepared by: The Neosho Mucket Recovery Team This species biological report informs the Draft Recovery Plan for the Neosho Mucket (Lampsilis rafinesqueana) (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2017). The Species Biological Report is a comprehensive biological status review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) for the Neosho Mucket and provides an account of species overall viability. A Recovery Implementation Strategy, which provides the expanded narrative for the recovery activities and the implementation schedule, is available at https://www.fws.gov/arkansas-es/. The Recovery Implementation Strategy and Species Biological Report are finalized separately from the Recovery Plan and will be updated on a routine basis. Executive Summary The Neosho Mucket is a freshwater mussel endemic to the Illinois, Neosho, and Verdigris River basins in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. It is associated with shallow riffles and runs comprising gravel substrate and moderate to swift currents, but prefers near-shore areas or areas out of the main current in Shoal Creek and Illinois River. It does not occur in reservoirs lacking riverine characteristics. The life-history traits and habitat requirements of the Neosho Mucket make it extremely susceptible to environmental change (e.g., droughts, sedimentation, chemical contaminants). Mechanisms leading to the decline of Neosho Mucket range from local (e.g., riparian clearing, chemical contaminants, etc.), to regional influences (e.g., altered flow regimes, channelization, etc.), to global climate change. The synergistic (interaction of two or more components) effects of threats are often complex in aquatic environments, making it difficult to predict changes in mussel and fish host(s) distribution, abundance, and habitat availability that may result from these effects. -

Species Status Assessment Class: Bivalvia Family: Unionidae Scientific Name: Lampsilis fasciola Common Name: Wavy-rayed lampmussel Species synopsis: Lampsilis fasciola belongs to the subfamily Ambleminae and the tribe Lampsilini, which includes 17 extant and 6 likely extirpated New York species of the genera Actinonaias, Epioblasma, Lampsilis, Leptodea, Ligumia, Obovaria, Potamilus, Ptychobranchus, Toxolasma, Truncilla, and Villosa (Haag, 2012; Graf and Cummings, 2011). L. fasciola is mainly found in and around riffle areas of clear, hydrologically stable, fast moving water (Watters et al., 2009). Since 1970, L. fasciola has been found in six New York waterbodies. Historically, it has been collected in the Erie, Western Lake Ontario, and Lower Genesee basins (Strayer & Jirka, 1997). L. fasciola no longer considered abundant in any New York location, however they are most commonly found in the Allegheny River and its tributaries (The Nature Conservancy, 2009). With a state rank of “critically imperiled,” L. fasciola is listed as threatened in New York State, although it is secure throughout its range (NatureServe, 2013). In North America, approximately ⅔ to ¾ of native mussel species are extinct, listed as endangered or threatened, or are in need of conservation status (Williams et al. 1993; Stein et al.2000). While population trends in New York are unknown, it is assumed that they too are declining, due to a myriad of environmental stressors. 1 Status a. Current and Legal Protected Status i. Dyer Between July and October 2005, 42 sites across Ohio Brush Creek watershed were surveyed to assess the spatial distribution of native freshwater mussels (Unionidae). Freshwater mussel shells were recorded at 28 out of 42 sites representing 14 native species. A total of thirteen species were recorded at 19 sites as living or fresh dead. Associations between the presence, diversity, and abundance of freshwater mussels and coarse-scale variables (drainage area, stream gradient, and percent land cover) and fine- scale variables (200 meter stream-reach habitat features based on Ohio EPA’s Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI)) were explored using correlation and chi-square analysis. The presence, diversity, and abundance of mussel shells were associated with both coarse- and fine-scale variables. Drainage area and stream reaches with excellent channel development, high amounts of habitat cover, maximum water depths > 1 meter, and riffle depths > 5 cm were all associated with the presence, diversity, and abundance of mussels. -

Conservation Assessment The Wavyrayed Lampmussel, Lampsilis fasciola Rafinesque, 1820 Compiled by Kevin J. Roe Department of Biological Sciences Saint Louis University St. Louis, MO 63103-2010 Executive Summary: The Wavyrayed lampmussel, Lampsilis fasciola, Rafinesque, 1820 is a medium sized mussel of the central U.S. This moderately inflated mussel is often found in riffle habitat on meduim sized rivers. Lampsilis fasciola can be distinguished from other mussels by the numerous green rays that cover the disk. The historical range of this species included the Great Lakes drainages and the Ohio and Mississippi rivers south to Tennessee. Although widespread L. fasciola has been declining in parts of its range and is considered to be imperiled by several states. Host fishes identified to date include two species of Micropterus. The long-term survival of this species is dependent upon healthy populations of host fishes and the presence of suitable habitat. Factors considered detrimental to the persistence of this species are pollution particularly some metals such as copper, zebra mussels, and impoundments. Context : The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessed the status of Wavy-rayed Lampmussel in October 1999. The assessment resulted in the designation of Wavy-rayed Lampmussel as Endangered. Wavy-rayed Lampmussel was subsequently listed on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) when the Act was proclaimed in June 2003. In April 2010, the status was reassessed as Special Concern. The reason for this designation was that surveys since the first assessment identified a large, previously unknown reproducing population in the Maitland River and that there is evidence that some of the populations are reproducing. A species Recovery Potential Assessment (RPA) process has been developed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Science to provide the information and scientific advice required to meet the various requirements of the SARA, such as the authorization to carry out activities that would otherwise violate the SARA as well as the development of recovery strategies. The scientific information also serves as advice to the DFO Minister regarding the listing of the species under SARA and is used when analyzing the socio-economic impacts of adding the species to the list as well as during subsequent consultations, where applicable. This assessment considers the scientific data available with which to assess the recovery potential of Wavy-rayed Lampmussel in Canada. -

Survey goals were: (1) to document current distributions through collection of recent shells; (2) to document former distributions through collection of relict shells and examination of museum collections; (3) to identify changes in distribution; (4) to identify the primary natural and anthropomorphic factors impacting unionids; and (5) to develop a model to explain the documented distributions. The survey confirmed 30 unionid species and the exotic Corbicula fluminea for the state, and museum vouchers documented one additional unionid species. Analysis of museum records and an extensive literature search coupled with research in adjacent states identified 13 additional unionid species with known distributions near the Nebraska border. -
