In any given year the Royal Australian Mint produces hundreds of thousands of circulating and numismatic coins. Few people know exactly who is responsible for designing, minting, and releasing a particular coin, however. So, with that in mind, we have peeled back the veil in order to introduce you to people who are instrumental in producing some of the finest coins on the planet. They call themselves “Minties”.

9 2013 $5 silver proof COLOUR PRINTED domed coin

This year, Royal Australian Mint’s celebrated Southern Sky collection features a heavenly body of stars that have been talked about, and admired, for millennia. Pavo is Latin for peacock, and the origins of the Pavo constellation are steeped in ancient Greco-Roman myths, variations of which are still told around the world today.

10 2013 Southern Sky – PAVO

$5 Silver Proof Colour Printed Domed Coin In Greek and Roman mythology, the peacock was sacred to Hera (or Juno), Goddess of Women and Marriage – who was also the wife of Zeus; she was said to have adorned the tail feathers of the bird with the thousand eyes of her giant servant, Argus Panoptes, as a tribute after he was slain. The constellation is said to depict a male peacock who has erected and fanned out his train, drooped his half- open wings to his sides, and is strutting and prancing from one foot to the other, shivering from time to time. This produces a spectacular shimmering, psychedelic display – and an amazing coin. 210187 Just as the peacock is a symbol of the greatness of an ancient Goddess, so is the Pavo coin a symbol of the Mint’s continued commitment to produce breathtakingly innovative collectible coins. The coin has been expertly crafted by Mint designer, Aaron Baggio, and shows the Pavo constellation as it appears in the early night sky. The celestial coordinates of the starry image encircle the outer rim of the coin. Following the sell-out success of our 2012 Southern Sky Crux $5 Colour Printed Domed Coin, the Mint is releasing 10 000 of these innovative and imaginative 2013 $5 silver proof COLOUR PRINTED domed coin coins to collectors. They are expected to sell fast, so get in and secure yours today.

11 FIRSTBORN baby of the DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE 2 013

He is the baby boy that, seemingly, the whole world has been waiting for. Ever since the Palace announced in late 2012 that the Duchess of Cambridge was pregnant, preparations have been made in earnest for the arrival of the new royal - all in front of the world’s media and a never-ending line of eager onlookers. It has been 120 years since a sitting British monarch has been alive for the birth of a great-grandchild and heir. George now becomes third in line to the throne behind The Duke of Cambridge and The Prince of Wales. With the impending birth of the new prince, the Royal Australian Mint sought approval from Buckingham Palace to create a specially designed coin – complete with the name of the new royal – and it is our pleasure to now bring this special coin to you.

12 2013 Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Royal Baby Coins

To celebrate this joyous occasion, the Royal Australian Mint is proud to release the latest coin in its Royal 210284 Collection. Prince George's name appears under the monograms of each of his parents, set in the latest branch of the Royal Family Tree. 13 Korean War 1950 –1953 60th Anniversary The Korean War began on 25 June 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Attrition warfare, reminiscent of the Western Front years before, ensued. Fierce fighting continued right up until the last day of the conflict, which was signaled by the signing of an armistice on 27 July 1953 – three years and one month after the war began. The ending was so abrupt that some soldiers had to be convinced the conflict really was over.

14 60th Anniversary of the Korean War

This $1 coin produced by the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Its reverse, designed by Mint designer Aaron Baggio, symbolizes the signing of the armistice agreement between communist and United Nations leaders in 1953. The depiction of a dove in flight and the word ‘peace’ in Korean is a reminder of the ultimate goal on the still-troubled peninsula.

The second release in the Royal Australian Mint’s Explorers’ First Sightings series is a representation of a Western Grey Kangaroo, taken from John Gould’s The Mammals of Australia. Richter’s depiction of these animals was taken from a sketch made by Gould’s 210253 Australian journey in 1838. This beautifully designed coin captures the essence of Gould’s original design and Richter’s artistic talent – as well as the intrigue, intricacy, and creative expression that went into documenting what was then an almost unseen species in Europe.

60th Anniversary of the CORONATION of HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Months before her 26th birthday, Elizabeth, eldest daughter of King George IV ascended to the throne following the death of her father. The coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II took place over a year later, on 2 June 1953, and was an event that captured the imagination of the entire world. In addition to the 8251 guests in attendance, an international audience of over twenty million watched the coronation ceremony on television – for many it was the first televised event they had ever seen. At the time, many saw the accession of this new, young queen to be the spark Great Britain needed following the devastation of the Second World War and the hardship in the years that had followed – some even called it the start of a prosperous, second Elizabethan era. 60 years later, Queen Elizabeth II is a monarch who is still adored around the world; a Queen whose reign has endured through extremely trying times, and has been celebrated in times of prosperity; and a loving mother, grandmother and, as of June, a great-grandmother.

21 2013 20c Uncirculated Coin When an Australian cricket team first won on English soil in 1882, a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, famously published a satirical obituary stating that English cricket had died, the body had been cremated and the ashes had been taken to Australia. The subsequent 1882-1883 English tour of Australia was dubbed “the quest to regain The Ashes”… During their tour, a small terracotta urn was presented to English captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women. It was said to contain the cremated remains of a cricket bail – or so the story goes. This urn became the symbol of one of the most celebrated and hotly 310290 contested rivalries in international sport. 130 years later, the Royal Australian Mint has released this striking memento in commemoration of the nail- biting contests of the past – and in anticipation of those yet to come.

22 2013 Inspirational Australians

2013 $1 Uncirculated Coin Australia’s ‘ King of Country’ was born in Kempsey, , in June, 1927. Named David Gordon Kirkpatrick by his parents, the young musician adopted the stage name “Slim Dusty” at just 11 years of age. Slim’s 1957 hit “A Pub with No Beer” was the first Australian single to receive a Gold Record and was, at the time, the biggest selling record by an Australian. What is more, the boy from the bush made sure everyone heard his music – he was known to travel 30 000 miles annually to reach his audience. Looking Forward, Looking Back – Slim Dusty’s 100th album – was released in 2000 through record label EMI, as all his previous 99 records had been. This meant that Slim Dusty was the first recording artist to release 100 albums through the same record label – just another accolade in a truly mesmerising career.
