I PROCESS ECONOMICS PROGRAM SRI INTERNATIONAL Menlo Park, California 94025 Abstract Process Economics Program Report No. 190A MEMBRANE GAS SEPARATION PROCESSES (January 1990) Advances in membrane technology in areas such as reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration have led to the development and commercial introduction of membranes for large-scale in- dustrial gas separations. This report studies four major applications--nitrogen production from air, oxygen-enriched air, hydrogen recovery from ammonia purge gas, and carbon dioxide separation from methane. Process economics for each application is presented, based on a preliminary process design. Competing separation operations are reviewed and competitive economics are evaluated for air separation by pressure swing adsorption. A technical review presents the essential criteria for designing on-site systems and membrane system attributes that affect economic competitiveness. Process design features required for the different industrial gas separations are also summarized, and the types of procedures employed to determine membrane area requirements are briefly described. a Finally, gas membrane system development activity by major world regions is presented, along with a review of the main market segments and a listing of current and potential applica- tions for gas membrane separation technology. Also, a look at the major supplier’s technology and market position is presented along with an SRI estimate of the number of currently installed units. THE OVERCONFIDENCE EFFECT AND IT PROFESSIONALS Van Der Vyver, Glen, University of Southern Queensland, Department of Information Systems, West Street, 4350 Toowoomba, Australia, [email protected] Abstract Information Technology has become a core activity in most, if not all, corporations. Although IT managers continue to be under-represented in executive management, the very centrality of information technology to corporate success or failure suggests that this situation cannot endure. It has been suggested that information technology managers are too narrowly focused and technically oriented for strategic roles in the corporation. A key skill required of the executive relates to making decisions in situations imbued with uncertainty. This paper examines a cognitive process, the overconfidence effect, which has been shown to influence good decision making. An analysis is presented as to the susceptibility of IT professionals to the overconfidence effect when compared to accounting / finance and marketing professionals.

  • No Limits Freediving
1 No Limits Freediving "The challenges to the respiratory function of the breath-hold diver' are formidable. One has to marvel at the ability of the human body to cope with stresses that far exceed what normal terrestrial life requires." Claes Lundgren, Director, Center for Research and Education in Special Environments A woman in a deeply relaxed state floats in the water next to a diving buoy. She is clad in a figure-hugging wetsuit, a dive computer strapped to her right wrist, and another to her calf. She wears strange form-hugging silicone goggles that distort her eyes, giving her a strange bug-eyed appearance. A couple of meters away, five support divers tread water near a diving platform, watching her perform an elaborate breathing ritual while she hangs onto a metal tube fitted with two crossbars. A few meters below the buoy, we see that the metal tube is in fact a weighted sled attached to a cable descending into the dark-blue water. Her eyes are still closed as she begins performing a series of final inhalations, breathing faster and faster. Photographers on the media boats snap pictures as she performs her final few deep and long hyperventilations, eliminating carbon dioxide from her body. Then, a thumbs-up to her surface crew, a pinch of the nose clip, one final lungful of air, and the woman closes her eyes, wraps her knees around the bottom bar of the sled, releases a brake device, and disappears gracefully beneath the waves. The harsh sounds of the wind and waves suddenly cease and are replaced by the effervescent bubbling of air being released from the regulators of scuba-divers.

  • Cochran Undersea Technology
Cochran Undersea Technology www.DiveCochran.com Technical Publication ©2013 7Apr13 Task Loading While scuba diving, the diver wants to focus on his Mission whether it be cruising a reef, photographing fish, cave diving, disarming a mine, or just diving with a buddy for the fun of it. The diver doesn’t need or want to be distracted or concerned by equipment tasks that could be easily avoided. Cochran dive computers have the lowest task loading of any unit on the market today. This is one reason why Cochran is the only dive computer used by NATO, the US Navy, and other international militaries. Cochran’s goal is to allow Cochran dive computer owners to maximize their diving experience. Toward this goal, Cochran has addressed the following issues: No Buttons – no Worries Regardless of how well a product is designed, having pushbuttons is always less reliable than not having pushbuttons. Pushbuttons can be troublesome when wearing gloves. Trying to press a pushbutton or combination of pushbuttons while carrying a camera and taking a picture is at best, challenging. Cochran dive computers are fully automatic and have no pushbuttons. If desired to change any settings in a Cochran dive computer while on the surface, the diver uses the three permanent stainless contacts on the side or bottom of the unit. Batteries Cochran dive computers have the longest battery life. By checking for battery warnings just before a dive, the diver can be assured that when he starts a dive there is sufficient battery power to complete it. Constantly checking the battery while in a dive is not necessary with a Cochran dive computer.

  • PROLOGUE If I Die, It Will Be in the Most Glorious Place That Nobody
PROLOGUE 2001 If I die, it will be in the most glorious place that nobody has ever seen. I can no longer feel the fingers in my left hand. The glacial Antarctic water has seeped through a tiny puncture in my formerly waterproof glove. If this water were one-tenth of a degree colder, the ocean would become solid. Fighting the knife-edged freeze is depleting my strength, my blood vessels throbbing in a futile attempt to deliver warmth to my extremities. The archway of ice above our heads is furrowed like the surface of a golf ball, carved by the hand of the sea. Iridescent blue, Wedgwood, azure, cerulean, cobalt, and pastel robin’s egg meld with chalk and silvery alabaster. The ice is vibrant, bright, and at the same time ghostly, shadowy. The beauty contradicts the danger. We are the first people to cave dive inside an iceberg. And we may not live to tell the story. It’s February, in the middle of what passes for summer in Antarctica. My job, for National Geographic, is to lead an advanced technical diving team in search of underwater caves deep within the largest moving object on earth, the B-15 iceberg. I had known that diving into tunnels inside this giant piece of ice would be difficult, but I hadn’t calculated that getting out would be nearly impossible. The tidal currents accelerated so quickly that they’ve caged us inside the ice. We’re trapped in this frozen fortress, and I have to figure out how to escape.
