The Tribe Weekly Newsletter This week’s parashot are Acharei Mot and Kedoshim Shabbat Times in London Shabbat begins: 8.09pm Shabbat ends: 9.19pm This week, there are once again two Parashot; Acharei Mot and Kedoshim. Following the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, two of Aharon’s (Aaron’s) four sons, God told Aharon (Aaron) that only a Kohen Gadol (High Priest) would be allowed to enter the Kodesh Kodashim (The Holy of Holies) in the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and only on Yom Kippur. The Kodesh Kodashim (The Holy of Holies) was the holiest part of the Mishkan which housed the Ark. The Parasha (Weekly Torah Portion) of Acharei Mot continues to focus on the day of Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) and describes the service of the casting of lots over two goats. The lots determined which goat should be offered to God and which should be taken out to the wilderness, to carry away the sins of the Children of Israel. Acharei Mot also tells the Jewish people to only bring an offering in the Holy Temple. It also makes clear that blood is forbidden to be eaten. The Parshah of Kedoshim lists dozens of Mitzvot (Commands) through which a Jewish man or woman can make themselves holy and can therefore appreciate the holiness of God. These Mitzvot (Commands) include not worshipping idols, the giving of charity, Shabbat, honesty in business, looking up to one’s parents and the holiness of life itself. One of the most famous Mitzvot (Commands) in Kedoshim is to; ‘Love Your Fellow as Yourself’. The great sage, Rabbi Akiva said that this is the most important rule of the Torah and he had to remind his students to not only respect each other, but to also respect each other’s points of view. When a homeless man walked into Cesia Abigail Restaurant, in America, asking for money, the owner refused to give him any. Now you might think this is heartless, but in fact, Cesia had something better in mind! She asked the homeless man why he didn’t have a job, to which he responded that his past was preventing him from changing his future. “Well, I have done a lot of things I shouldn’t have done in the past and no one wants to employ me because of that. So now I had to turn myself to the streets and get money the only way I know, begging, stealing and asking for money.” Instead of giving him money, Cesia gave him a job!! Story 2 – The Waiter Never Saw it Coming! When a restaurant customer noticed his waiter, named Johnny, was having a particularly difficult day, he responded in a way that most wouldn’t. Rather than calling over a manager or leaving Johnny some small, measly tip to prove a point, the diner summoned his waiter over to the table and gave him a £100! “You just paid off my car sir,” said the grateful young man as he stood there weeping in shock! He was just so grateful.
