AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASE Spain: No violent policing of demonstrations On the eve of the EU summit in Seville this weekend, Amnesty International is again calling on the Spanish authorities to ensure that policing of demonstrations respects the right to peaceful protest as reports emerged of clashes between strikers and police. In addition to a number of different protests over the next few days, the EU summit is taking place at the same time as a general strike and an immigrant lock-in at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville. "The importance of allowing people to assemble and express their opinions peacefully cannot be emphasized enough," said Amnesty International. Law enforcement officers appear to have used excessive and indiscriminate force during an anti-globalization demonstration in Barcelona in June 2001, and a protest by students in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in November 2001. These precedents prompted the organization to make a similar call to the Spanish authorities before the EU summit in Barcelona in March 2002. "Policing has to be measured in its methods, and respect the rights of people engaged in non-violent protest," the organization added. More recently Amnesty International received a report alleging that a health secretary of the Unión General de Trabajadores (General Union of Workers, UGT) was physically attacked and wrongfully detained by National Police officers. The incident on 14 June reportedly took place when Inmaculada Alascio and two other of her trade union colleagues were spray painting words of support for the general strike of 20 June on the wall of a commercial centre in Seville. Amnesty International cannot comment about the truth of the accusations about police violence made by the UGT; they remain subject of a criminal investigation. JUAN ANTONIO MÓDENES CABRIZO Department of Geography, Autonomous University of Barcelona and Demographic Studies Centre JULIAN LÓPEZ COLÁS Demographic Studies Centre (Barcelona, Spain) BRENDA YÉPEZ MARTÍNEZ Demographic Studies Centre (Barcelona, Spain) One of many interesting demo-geographic processes in Spain become the expansion of the second homes and the consequent transformation of wide zones close to the big cities, coasts, and interior zones which turned to be increasingly attractive. Most second homes are purchased for personal reasons. In some cases owners use their second home as a sort of refuge to temporarily escape their urban environment. Part of this demand, specially in the Mediterranean coast occurs because the international request attracted by the climate, the differential level in life standards, and the present transport facility. Nonetheless, the internal demand is very important and continues to grow. If in 1991, 12% of the Spanish resident homes possessed a secondary household, in 2001 it was already increasing to 15%. Almost one of each seven homes is immersed in multiple residence strategy. Diverse studies have demonstrated the interactions between housing characteristics, those related to the habitual residences and the possession of second homes. Generally they have concluded that the main explanatory factors are, on one hand, a dense and compact habitat, and by other hand, the socio-demographics and socioeconomic status of secondary residence users. Nevertheless, the guideline of location of this type of housing and its interaction with homes characteristics seems to be a less treated subject.

Vía de la Plata (Sevilla) General Description: This route was used by Mozárabic pilgrims during the period of Muslim domination of Spain. ~1000 km from Sevilla traveling through Mérida, Cáceres and Salamanca to Zamora then via one of several variants to Santiago. From Zamora the pilgrim can continue directly northward to join the Camino francés at Astorga. An alternative is to turn northwest to reach Santiago directly by traveling either into Portugal via Bragança and Verin (Vía Portugués de la Vía de la Plata, 382 km Zamora to Santiago) or via Puebla de Sanabria (Camino Sanabrés, 400 km Zamora to Santiago). Waymarking: Well waymarked throughout with yellow arrows. Terrain: Undulating and not very difficult walking as far as Zamora although some of the distances between settlements are very long. This is a situation that is improving every year with the opening of new refuges. After Zamora all of the variants to the Camino francés or directly to Santiago have many steep climbs and descents. When to go: Setting out on the Vía de la Plata in late June through August would be nigh unto suicidal. Southern Spain in the summer is HOT! September and October would be reasonable except that you will be walking toward winter weather in the northern reaches. Following spring northward starting in April would be a good choice. Climate charts for Sevilla, Cáceres, Salamanca and Zamora. Accommodation: There are an increasing number of pilgrim-oriented facilities, some of them albergues as such, others places where the accommodation will be a spot on the floor and roof over your head (e.g., sports halls or parish rooms).

Abstract Spain keeps an exceptional epigraphic heritage, dated from the Roman civilization, that integrates thousands of Latin inscrip- tions nowadays disseminated along the Iberian peninsula. For many purposes such as education, innovation, cataloging, study and dissemination of this type of historical documentation, a clear demand of placing all this epigraphic heritage into modern 3D graphics, internet and mobile devices is increasing. We present the novel ‘Epigraphia 3D’ for handheld devices, a native Android app for exploring a total of 60 Roman inscriptions from the National Museum of Roman Art (Mérida, Badajoz). The work emphasizes the 3D nature feature for navigating through the inscriptions, by using Glob3 Mobile, an open source GIS framework for visualizing the 3D inscriptions. Besides, an error analysis of the simpliﬁed models is tackled.
