    Carl Kylberg. With colour beyond the surface 18 June – 25 September, 2016 Flowing brushwork and vibrant colours distinguish the Swedish artist Carl Kylberg’s (1878-1952) paintings of landscapes, figures and still lifes. He combined his artistic practice with a spiritual quest that imbues his oeuvre with an existential dimension. The dissolved shapes in his works were debated in both art and politics. This exhibition shows parts of Kylberg’s entire body of work, from the early paintings and cartoons from the 1910s, the children’s books and more colourful paintings from the 1920s, to his famous classical motifs from the 1930s and 40s. Kylberg’s breakthrough to the wider public came late, but he is counted as a key figure of Swedish art since the 1930s. The exhibition highlights the artist role and puts his paintings in the context of the period before, during and after the Second World War. Ernest Thiel, the founder of The Thiel Gallery, stopped collecting art after selling his collections to the Swedish state in 1924. In 1937, Thiel was asked in an interview in Nya Dagligt Allehanda, one of the national daily papers, what he thought of the latest modern art. Thiel replied that he had recently seen Carl Kylberg’s exhibition at the Royal Academy Of Fine Arts in Stockholm: “It was a revelation. Swedish art is in a promising state of development...” Thiel never bought any works by Kylberg, but there are parallels between the artist’s spirituality and Ernest Thiel’s interest in belief systems and philosophy. Kylberg’s constant self-examination and search for meaning beyond material values still is relevant today.

Artists and collectors Room 1 The Swedish artists first encountered Japanese imagery and forms in Paris, where many were deeply impressed. “As an artist, Japan is my native country,” wrote the Swedish painter Carl Larsson in 1919, and influences can also be seen in work by artists such as Bruno Liljefors and Julia Beck. Three of the woodcuts here belonged to Gustaf and Maja Fjæstad and were kept in their home in Värmland. The art patron and former owner of the Thiel Gallery, Ernest Thiel owned four woodcuts by the Japanese artist Utamaro. They were recently rediscovered in the Thiel Gallery’s warehouse and are shown in this room. The other woodcuts belonged to a collector in Värmland with a special interest in prints. When the first Japanese objects arrived in Europe in the 1860s, parasols, fans and kimonos were frequently used as costumes and props in painted portraits. In the 1890s, the influence increased in paintings, books and crafts. Japanese woodcuts were especially popular. The Japanese term for print is Ukiyo-e, which means “pictures from the floating world”. Motifs from the entertainment district in the city of Edo (Tokyo), were especially appreciated, showing theatre performances, courtesans, sumo wrestlers and geishas, but also everyday scenes and landscapes. Underneath the surface lies a Buddhist melancholic view of life’s transience. Ukiyo-e flourished in the late 18th century, and the most prominent artists were Ando Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai, Torii Kiyonaga and Kitagawa Utamaro. Japanese crafts objects became popular collectibles during this period. Netsuke are belt buttons, charmingly designed as miniature sculptures.
