BLUMEA 51: 221–280 Published on 27 July 2006 http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/000651906X622210 A TAXONOMIC REVISION OF HYMENOPHYLLACEAE ATSUSHI EBIHARA1, 2, JEAN-YVES DUBUISSON3, KUNIO IWATSUKI4, SABINE HENNEQUIN3 & MOTOMI ITO1 SUMMARY A new classification of Hymenophyllaceae, consisting of nine genera (Hymenophyllum, Didymoglos- sum, Crepidomanes, Polyphlebium, Vandenboschia, Abrodictyum, Trichomanes, Cephalomanes and Callistopteris) is proposed. Every genus, subgenus and section chiefly corresponds to the mono- phyletic group elucidated in molecular phylogenetic analyses based on chloroplast sequences. Brief descriptions and keys to the higher taxa are given, and their representative members are enumerated, including some new combinations. Key words: filmy ferns, Hymenophyllaceae, Hymenophyllum, Trichomanes. INTRODUCTION The Hymenophyllaceae, or ‘filmy ferns’, is the largest basal family of leptosporangiate ferns and comprises around 600 species (Iwatsuki, 1990). Members are easily distin- guished by their usually single-cell-thick laminae, and the monophyly of the family has not been questioned. The intrafamilial classification of the family, on the other hand, is highly controversial – several fundamentally different classifications are used by indi- vidual researchers and/or areas. Traditionally, only two genera – Hymenophyllum with bivalved involucres and Trichomanes with tubular involucres – have been recognized in this family. This scheme was expanded by Morton (1968) who hierarchically placed many subgenera, sections and subsections under -

Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. Bedfardia arborescens Hochr. is a tree listed under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 and is known in Tasmania only from an outlying population in cloud forest on Mt Munro, Cape Barren Island in the Furneaux Group. While the species is a common component of some rainforest and mixed forest in southeast mainland Australia, the outlying population on Cape Barren Island has apparently been eroded by a high fire frequency over the previous 200 years. The species occupies an ecological zone that is marginal to Atherosperma moschatum Labill.-dominated rainforest. Some stands occur adjacent to grasslands separated by a sharp ecological boundary. Even-aged cohorts represent the population structure on the mountain with no evidence of recent regeneration in or adjacent to any particular stand. A range of different aged cohorts occurs within the forest across the mountain. Mt Munro intercepts cloud moisture, resulting in the development of a cloud forest and a steep precipitation gradient between Mt Munro and the nearby coast. -

Six floristic communities are described from rainforest in northern and eastern Tasmania. The communities occur in lower rainfall areas, where they are often restricted ro fire-protected sites. They have climatic envelopes which are significantly distinct from each other and from rainforest in higher rainfall areas. The conservation status of the communities is assessed. Key Words: rainforest, Tasmania, conservation, relicts. INTRODUCTION METHODS Temperate rainforests worldwide are restricted mainly to the TASFORHAB profiles (Peters 1984) were collected from coastal and maritime zones, and generally occur in areas of relict rainforest patches throughout the study area. These high rainfall (Kellogg 1992). All the rainforests of Tasmania profiles record the floristics, species abundance and the are relicts of extensive rainforest which once occurred on the structure of the forest. A number of profiles already on the ancient continent Gondwana (Hill 1990, Nelson 1981). TASFORHAB data base were used to cross-check results, Many of the genera which are characteristic of rainforest in and to locate potential rainforest sites. -

For the Tasmanian White Gum (Eucalyptus Viminalis) Wet Forest
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) (s266B) DRAFT Conservation Advice (incorporating listing advice) for the Tasmanian white gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) wet forest The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the EPBC Act and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. The Committee will provide its advice on the Tasmanian white gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) wet forest to the Minister as a draft conservation advice in 2020. The Minister will decide whether to amend the list of threatened ecological communities under Section 184 of the EPBC Act to include the Tasmanian white gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) wet forest. This draft conservation advice will be made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister will have regard to all public and expert comment relevant to the consideration of the ecological community for listing. September. Photographer: John Smith-Dodsworth DISTRIBUTION Indigenous. New Zealand: North, South and Chatham Islands, from the Bay of Islands to south Canterbury. Most common in the Hauraki Gulf, south-eastern North Island (and in the Mangaharuru, Kaweka, Kaimanawa and Ruahine Ranges) and in North-west Nelson. Also in Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania). HABITAT Coastal to montane. Usually rupestral in lightly shaded habitats. Rarely a low epiphyte on tree trunks and exposed roots. FEATURES Rhizome long-creeping, slender, pliant, glabrescent. Fronds 20-90 mm long. Stipes widely spaced, 5-40 mm long, usually narrowly winged, ± glabrous. Lamina dark green, elliptic-oblong, deeply 2-pinnatifid, 10-80 mm long, 10-25 mm wide; sometimes with a pair of shortly stalked basal pinnae present; secondary segments branching from both sides of the costae, simple or 2- or more times divided. Ultimate segments 05-1.0 mm wide; margins sharply toothed. Sori borne on short basal segments on the acroscopic side of the pinnae, solitary; involucre obovate, bilabiate, divided to the middle or below, 1.0-1.5 mm long, 1.3-2.0 mm wide, much wider than the ultimate segments; base cuneate, slightly immersed; margins ± entire to irregular, or finely toothed; receptacle included or slightly exserted.
