Andrew May Pseudoscience and Science Fiction Science and Fiction Editorial Board Mark Alpert Philip Ball Gregory Benford Michael Brotherton Victor Callaghan Amnon H Eden Nick Kanas Geoffrey Landis Rudi Rucker Dirk Schulze-Makuch Ru€diger Vaas Ulrich Walter Stephen Webb Science and Fiction – A Springer Series This collection of entertaining and thought-provoking books will appeal equally to science buffs, scientists and science-fiction fans. It was born out of the recognition that scientific discovery and the creation of plausible fictional scenarios are often two sides of the same coin. Each relies on an understanding of the way the world works, coupled with the imaginative ability to invent new or alternative explanations—and even other worlds. Authored by practicing scientists as well as writers of hard science fiction, these books explore and exploit the borderlands between accepted science and its fictional counterpart. Uncovering mutual influences, promoting fruitful interaction, narrating and analyzing fictional scenarios, together they serve as a reaction vessel for inspired new ideas in science, technology, and beyond. Whether fiction, fact, or forever undecidable: the Springer Series “Science and Fiction” intends to go where no one has gone before! Its largely non-technical books take several different approaches. Journey with their authors as they • Indulge in science speculation—describing intriguing, plausible yet unproven ideas; • Exploit science fiction for educational purposes and as a means of promoting critical thinking; • Explore the interplay of science and science fiction—throughout the history of the genre and looking ahead; • Delve into related topics including, but not limited to: science as a creative process, the limits of science, interplay of literature and knowledge; • Tell fictional short stories built around well-defined scientific ideas, with a supplement summarizing the science underlying the plot.

Amanda Castaneda (Manda) Alignment: Scrupulous P.C.C.: Lucky Psychic Occupation: Navigational Systems Engineer Explanatory note: The following is a transcript from part of an audio recording taken during an interview between Dr. Edmond Smythe and Amanda. Amanda: … Over time, Martika and her team mapped out roughly two miles of East L.A that they consider to be experiencing an “extreme amount of paranormal activity”. Our house is right in the middle of that area. Dealing with magical anomalies, paranormal activities and supernatural problems was a regular thing. I was growing up in it, and therefore I was investigating it with her until I came up here for college. As much as I wanted to continue investigating the paranormal, I kept my head down and in my school work. I’d planned to go back home after graduating, but I got lucky - I am a lucky psychic ya know - and was hired right out of school. Turns out, my head for numbers is in demand with tech companies here. So, for the time being my home is here in Seattle, but I want to get back into investigating the paranormal with the Lazlo Society. Smythe: I’ve haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Martika yet, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about her. Talking with her on the phone the other day, she had nothing but good things to say about you. So really, from the sounds of it, her loss is my gain. Its good to have you on my team. Amanda: Thank you. She said the same about you.

  • Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games
Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games Photosensitive Seizures A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games. These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects. Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued. If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing. PEgI ratings and guidance applicable within PEgI markets only. What is the PEGI System? The PEgI age-rating system protects minors from games unsuitable for their particular age group. PLEaSE NOTE it is not a guide to gaming difficulty. Comprising two parts, PEgI allows parents and those purchasing games for children to make an informed choice appropriate to the age of the intended player.

As it addresses the givenness, or “naturalness,” of “the human,” Frankenstein reimagines the putative boundary between the human and the nonhuman, a fictive border made perceptible by contemporary scientific investigation. Catalyzing a new genre, science fiction, Shelley estranges the enlightenment discourse of “reason,” revealing it as a highly regulative structure through which societies are forged and bodies governed. “Estranging Science, Fictionalizing Bodies: Viral Invasion, Infectious Fictions, and the Biological Discourses of ‘the Human,’ 1818-2005, posits a mutually infective relationship between science and literature. It both exposes the logic of purification that delimits “modern” forms of knowledge as discursively distinct (science v. literature) and considers how this distinction informs the evolutionary/philosophical shifts in how we think about the possible, the human, and the novel.

The most violent letters came from Reichians, furious because the book considered orgonomy alongside such (to them) outlandish cults as dianetics. Dianeticians, of course, felt the same about orgonomy. I heard from homeopaths who were insulted to find themselves in company with such frauds as osteopathy and chiropractic, and one chiropractor in Kentucky "pitied" me because I had turned my spine on God's greatest gift to suffering humanity. Several admirers of Dr. Bates favored me with letters so badly typed that I suspect the writers were in urgent need of strong spectacles. Oddly enough, most of these correspondents objected to one chapter only, thinking all the others excellent.
