Introduction Sailing is great sport for kids and families. It teaches a range of useful skills, such as teamwork and self confidence as well as practical skills such as boat handling and maintenance, sail trimming, seamanship and knots. There are many ways to participate in the sport ranging from the part time Wednesday sailor through to the professional yachtsman. The sport provides scope for all ages and once skills have been learned can see the sailor engaged in the sport for life. Sailing can be a cheap sport for beginners requiring only basic equipment for the beginner crew. Entry level boats can be found for as little as a few hundred dollars. Greenwich Flying Squadron (GFS) is committed to the promotion of youth sailing through the Sabot and Laser Class Dinghies. The Sabot is an 8ft single sail boat designed specifically for youngsters to learn to sail. Whilst the Laser is a larger and more challenging boat designed for late teens and adults. Details of the Sabot class, its association and participating clubs can be found on the internet at: http://www.sabot.au.com/ and at the Southern NSW Sabot association http://www.sabot.com.au/ 2. Sailing Sabots at Greenwich Flying Squadron a. Season Program GFS organises Sabot races on Sundays between September 16 and April 1 (except for school holidays). Races start at 1.00pm and are held on the Lane Cove river in the area between the club at Bay St Greenwich, Onions Pt, Hunters Hill and Woodford Bay, Lane Cove. See Figure 1 below. The Season Program is attached in Appendix A. Fig 1. Course Area b. Learning To sail Sabots are sailed by a skipper and crew up to the age of eleven years. After which Sabots are generally sailed single handed. Since the emphasis is on learning to sail GFS is happy for parents or older siblings to sail with younger crews as they learn. Boats skippered by adults will be included in a separate point score. Kids can get an opportunity to try the sport through a variety of means. Initially they may like to go for sail with an older child who has already achieved some sailing competency who can give them a taste of what the sport is like. They may like to start as a crew member for another child on a more frequent basis or they can commence as a novice sailor in their own boat with a similarly aged child. Whilst GFS organises and runs Sabot races, the club is not a sailing school or a childcare service, though we do provide some instruction and pointers and also provide on water support for the sailors. Parents are required to supervise their children throughout the course of the sailing day and take responsibility (along with the sailors) for the rigging and unrigging of their sabot. GFS provides two rescue boats for the supervision of the Sabots whilst racing. The primary responsibility of these boats is for safety and rescue as required. These boats will be manned on a roster by parents of children sailing in the fleet. c. Racing GFS Racing is designed to introduce kids to the sport in an environment where the emphasis is on fun and skills development. Novelty races are held on a number of weeks during the program to help develop boat handling skills. The season is broken in to two halves a Spring point score and Autumn points score of 10 and 11 heats respectively. At the completion of the season prizes will be awarded for the winners and place getters for each point score as well as the overall season. Additional trophy races are held in the second part of the season for which prizes will be awarded to winners. d. Membership GFS caters to either individual crew member ($35) or Single Sabot /family membership ($125). Membership provides you with the opportunity to enter races and use club facilities as set out within the house rules sections of the GFS Website (www.gfs.org.au). A membership form is included in Appendix B to this document. e. Boat Storage GFS has storage capacity for 24 Sabots. Depending on availability, it may be possible for members to store boats at the club for an annual fee of $80/season/boat. Boat space is determined by the clubhouse manager. Owners of non racing sabots will be asked to remove the boat from the club if another active racing boat requires space. f. Social During the season GFS Sabots hold BBQ’s once a month after racing. This is a chance to enjoy the club’s deck and facilities on warm summer afternoons and evenings and for the kids to socialise with each other. g. Parental Involvement As with any sports organization, GFS is run by volunteer members and committee members. Should you wish to become involved with Sabots at GFS we assume you would be available to help with organisation and input on race days. This would involve small amounts of time helping to start and finish races, stow boats, buoys or other equipment as well as looking after your children and crew members. There will be a roster for some activities; we would appreciate any volunteers for the rosters or other duties. h. Risk Management As with most sports there are some risks involved with Sailing. In line with Maritime NSW and Yachting Australia regulations, GFS is required to provide and maintain a risk management plan. The risk management plan can be downloaded from the club website. As part of the plan GFS is required to provide all club members with a Risk Warning which is included in Appendix D . In addition to this GFS sailing management must be advised if your child has of any relevant allergies or medical conditions. 3. Boats For Sale There are a number of sources for boats to purchase. The Sabot association web site has links to boats for sale. Alternatively clubs may have boats for sale on notice boards or club websites. Another option is the Trading Post or other general newspaper classified ads. Boats vary in price depending on age and can be purchased to suit the skill level of the sailor. A learner could be quite satisfied with a cheaper plywood boat. As a sailor becomes more skilled then there a range of newer fiberglass boats which will allow them to achieve their competitive potential. A list of boats for sale at GFS and contact details has been provided in Appendix C. An additional list of boats for sale is included on the Southern NSW Sabot Association website; http://www.sabot.com.au/Boats4Sale.htm 4.
