  • The International Wine Review
Complimentary Copy The International Wine Review California Zinfandel: A New Look Foreword by Joel Peterson Special Double Issue May/June 2017 1 Foreward Zinfandel has a long history in California. Much of that history is about adaptation to changing circumstance. The last 40 years have brought more change to the style and quality of the wines made from Zinfandel than ever before. Hence, while much has been written about this grape and its wine over the years, it is a bit surprising that a comprehensive up-to-date synopsis of its history in California, the growing regions that it inhabits, the winemakers who have wholeheartedly embraced it, or the excellent wines that are crafted from Zinfandel has not emerged. Fortunately that has changed with this report. As the modern California wine business has emerged from the late 1960’s the skill of its winemakers, the understanding of viticulture, wine making technology and consumer enthusiasm have all reach levels never before achieved. This has benefited Zinfandel greatly. Its ancient DNA has found a comfortable fit in the evolving California wine scene. The wines are better, at all levels, than they have ever been. The current review of California Zinfandel from the good people at the International Wine Review could not come at a more opportune time. They have written a thorough review of the current state of Zinfandel in California, its history, growing regions, winemakers, wineries and of course, its wine. While I cannot endorse the scores given the wines, as they are entirely the opinion of the International Wine Review.

  • 2016 Pinoli Cole Chardonnay Mariah Vineyard Mendocino Ridge AVA, Mendocino, CA
2016 Pinoli Cole Chardonnay Mariah Vineyard Mendocino Ridge AVA, Mendocino, CA The Wine: 100% Chardonnay from the remote and beautiful Mendocino Ridge AVA, California’s only AVA that is delineated by eleva- tion as opposed to geographical boundaries. Vineyards that sit above 1,200 foot in elevation, such as the Mariah Vineyard, find themselves in the sweet spot for ripening varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, just above the marine layer of coastal fog that flows in from the Pacific Ocean each day. Nicknamed the Islands in the sky AVA this rugged coastal re- gion is quickly gaining notoriety as the source for some of California’s best Chardonnay fruit. Aged for 12 months after malolactic fermentation in French oak. Winemaker Alex Cran- gle made just 168 cases. The Estate: The Pinoli Cole wines are a collaboration between Quigley Fine Wines and winemaker Alex Crangle. The name Pinoli Cole is derived from the old Boontling dialect spoken by the early set- tlers of this isolated valley and translates to gravelly soil. By sourcing the fruit from small, sustainably grown vineyards in the Anderson Valley AVA, the wines are intended to be terroir driven expressions of the cool climate of the Anderson Valley. Tasting Notes: Color: lighter shade of gold Aromas: fresh citrus, golden apple and pear with subtle hints of vanilla and toasted oak Flavor & Texture: round and richly textured the flavors of pear and apple are enhanced only slightly by French oak notes; the acid is lively and provides buoyancy Food Pairing: grilled halibut with fresh herbs, olive oil, white wine and Dijon mustard -Drink Now Through 2023- www.quigleyfinewines.com.

  • Pinotfile Vol 7 Issue 18
Pinot My Paramour Volume 7, Issue 18 May 26, 2009 Anderson Noir Valley Anderson Valley will never rival its southerly neighbor, the Russian River Valley, for notoriety. Retirees and urban refugees with money seeking the wine lifestyle won’t fine the creature comforts here. There is no restaurant scene, spa or high-end lodging. The local inhabitants discourage tourism, calling intruders “wine- and-cheese gentry.” Their worst fear is that this bucolic valley might become a destination wine region. The locals’ disdain for city people is reflected in the unique language of the Anderson Valley known as boontling, which refers to visitors as “brightlighters.” Despite this indigenous aversion to outsiders, the pinotphile cognoscenti have descended on the Anderson Valley, reveling in the magnificent Pinot Noirs that are threatening to make this slow lane region a wine lover’s paradise. Pinotphiles are a determined group, addicts if you will, looking for that next fix of Pinot Noir and rarely deterred by a challenge. They will travel anywhere to find what Adam Lee of Siduri Wines calls “true-believer” wineries that produce Pinot Noir because “it is the true enological love of their lives.” Anderson Valley is one of eleven grape-growing appellations in Mendocino County, California, but is the most uniquely suited to growing that insolent grape, Pinot Noir. Plantings of Pinot Noir in Mendocino County (2,204 acres) are overshadowed by Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon and rank fifth among the other major Pinot Noir growing regions of California (Sonoma,10,192 acres, Monterey, 7,123 acres, Santa Barbara, 4,140 acres and Napa, 2,756 acres).

  • Garagiste Murder Ridge Winery April 2021 2016
Volume 08 Issue 10 Garagiste WINE CLUB [gar-uh-zheest’] noun - A French term used to describe independent, artisan winemakers crafting small batches of wine in garage-type settings and not yet discovered by the mainstream. Murder Ridge Winery Owner & Winemaker: Steve Alden Location: Mendocino Ridge, California Farming the Mendocino Ridge is not for the faint of heart. With ridges soaring from 1,200 feet to 3,000 feet in elevation, this hidden gem of an appellation is rugged, isolated and untamed, with steep hillsides, forbidding mountain terrain and an abundance of natural wildlife including bears, mountain lions, and wild boar - it is what Steve Alden refers to as the epitome of ‘farming in the wilderness.’ Steve Alden is the grower, vintner and farmer behind Murder Ridge Winery, this month’s Garagiste Wine Club feature. Established in 2015, Murder Ridge Winery crafts very limited amounts of Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah and Chardonnay, all 100% estate grown from Steve’s Perli Vineyards located in the coastal mountains of the Mendocino Ridge AVA. His vineyard setting is quite unique, consisting of five cool, sun-soaked vineyard ‘islands’ surrounded by a sea of forest and stretched out along three miles of mountainous terrain - like an archipelago along Mendocino County’s south coast. Each vineyard block has its own microclimate, exposure, elevation, soils and weather patterns, and the rugged, steep terrain requires costly and extreme farming techniques. But the result? Low vigor vines that produce small sized, loosely packed clusters with tiny berries, creating wines with extraordinarily unique character. The Perli Vineyard blocks make up only thirty acres of Steve Alden’s expansive 2,000 acre timber ranch property that was originally purchased by his grandfather back in 1951.

  • Pinotfile Vol 9 Issue 44
Great Pinot is the Best Revenge Volume 9, Issue 44 July 28, 2014 Anderson Valley: Newfound Perception of Quality Since I first wrote at length about Anderson Valley Pinot Noir in 2007, the perception of quality has changed dramatically. Anderson Valley grapes were frequently sold to wineries outside the Anderson Valley AVA and the prices demanded for Pinot Noir grapes were among the lowest in California. Today, winemakers outside the Anderson Valley are still clamoring for grapes, but there has been an infusion of talented young winemakers (Phil Baxter, Jr., of Baxter Winery, Jason Drew of Drew Wines, Anthony Filiberti of Knez Winery, and Joseph Webb of Foursight Wines, for example), new wineries, new ownership of prominent vineyards (Ferrington, Savoy, Cerise, Klindt, Londer and Demuth), and a serious commitment by Kendall-Jackson Estates to Anderson Valley (Champ de Rêves, La Crema, Maggy Hawk and Wind Racer), resulting in more progressive ultra premium producers rooted firmly in Anderson Valley and bringing a new found perception of quality to the region. The name ‘Anderson Valley’ on a label really has cachet today. Matt Kramer wrote in New California Wine in 2004, “Anderson Valley is one of California’s most desirable Pinot Noir locales. The results, however, are not yet in, so this remains (optimistic) speculation.” I think he would agree that today, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir stands with the best California has to offer, and there is no longer any need to speculate. In 2007, I provided summaries for the 26 wineries based in the
