19 YEARS YOUNG representing the Holy Spirit. 2 THE ORDINATION OF PRIESTS

From its earliest days, the Church has set individuals apart for particular ministries. Through prayer and the laying-on of hands by the bishop and presbyters, the Church authorizes and equips new presbyters (priests) to celebrate the sacraments and to act as servants and shepherds to the people of God. Because we recognize that human strength is insufficient the ordination is preceded by prayer that the Holy Spirit will fill the candidates with grace and power to fulfil the ministry to which God has called each one of them.

We offer a warm welcome to all who are taking part in this service, especially to the families and friends of the ordinands.

Please take time before the service to pray for the ordinands and their families, and for the parishes in which they will serve.

All turn to face the bishop, who greets the people from the font at the back of the nave. The font is the place of baptism, to which the bishop will refer in the introduction to the service.

THE GREETING

The bishop greets the people

Bishop Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

There is one body and one spirit. All There is one hope to which we were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, All one God and Father of all.

Peace be with you All and also with you.

The bishop introduces the service, saying

God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling- place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom.

11 To serve this royal priesthood, God has given particular ministries. Priests are ordained to lead God’s people in the offering of praise and the proclamation of the gospel. They share with the Bishop in the oversight of the Church, delighting in its beauty and rejoicing in its well- being. They are to set the example of the Good Shepherd always before them as the pattern of their calling. With the Bishop and their fellow presbyters, they are to sustain the community of the faithful by the ministry of word and sacrament, that we all may grow into the fullness of Christ and be a living sacrifice acceptable to God.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE

Deacon As we stand together before God, and trusting in his grace alone, let us join with these ordinands in confessing our sins.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Bishop May almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The procession continues up the central aisle, as the conclusion of the opening hymn is sung. All turn back to face the front of the nave.

12 Dear mother earth, who day by day unfoldest blessings on our way, O praise him, Alleluia! The flowers and fruits that in thee grow, let them his glory also show: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

All ye that are of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part, O sing ye Alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and on him cast your care: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless, and worship him in humbleness, O praise him, Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Bishop Have those whose duty it is to know these ordinands and examine them found them to be of godly life and sound learning?

DDO They have.

Do they believe them to be duly called to serve God in the ministry for which each is being presented? DDO They do.

The bishop turns to the ordinands and says

THE COLLECT

All stand The bishop introduces a period of silent prayer, saying

Bishop Let us pray for these ordinands, and for the ministry of the whole people of God.

Almighty and eternal God, who, for the greater confirmation of our faith, allowed your holy apostle Thomas to doubt the resurrection of your Son till word and sight convinced him: grant to us, who have not seen, that we may also believe and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

15 All sit THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Habakkuk 2. 1-4 FIRST READING Morning: Read by Anna Norton FIRST READING Afternoon: Read by Kath Morris

A reading from the Prophet Habakkuk.

I will stand at my watch-post, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

At the end of the reading the reader says

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

16 PSALM 31. 1-6

The congregation remains seated for the singing of the psalm which is sung by the choir.

In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. Incline your ear to me; make haste to deliver me. Be my strong rock, a fortress to save me, for you are my rock and my stronghold; guide me, and lead me for your name’s sake. Take me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me, for you are my strength. R

Into your hands I commend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. I hate those who cling to worthless idols; I put my trust in the Lord. R

Chant: George Cooper (1820-76) Refrain: Katherine Dienes-Williams (b. 1970)

17 All stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The Choir sings an acclamation to herald the Gospel reading

Alleluia. Your words are spirit Lord, and they are life: you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia.

GOSPEL READING John 20. 24-29 GOSPEL READING Read by the Reverend Beverley Hunt

When the Gospel is announced the reader says

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory to you, O Lord.

Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’

At the end This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

18 The choir repeats the Alleluia.

THE DECLARATIONS

The ordinands stand, facing the bishop. The bishop addresses the congregation

Bishop Priests are called to be servants and shepherds among the people to whom they are sent. With their Bishop and fellow ministers, they are to proclaim the word of the Lord and to watch for the signs of God’s new creation. They are to be messengers, watchmen and stewards of the Lord; they are to teach and to admonish, to feed and provide for his family, to search for his children in the wilderness of this world’s temptations, and to guide them through its confusions, that they may be saved through Christ for ever. Formed by the word, they are to call their hearers to repentance and to declare in Christ’s name the absolution and forgiveness of their sins.

With all God’s people, they are to tell the story of God’s love. They are to baptize new disciples in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and to walk with them in the way of Christ, nurturing them in the faith. They are to unfold the Scriptures, to preach the word in season and out of season, and to declare the mighty acts of God. They are to preside at the Lord’s table and lead his people in worship, offering with them a spiritual sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. They are to bless the people in God’s name. They are to resist evil, support the weak, defend the poor, and intercede for all in need. They are to minister to the sick and prepare the dying for their death. Guided by the Spirit, they are to discern and foster the gifts of all God’s people, that the whole Church may be built up in unity and faith.

19 The bishop addresses the ordinands directly

We trust that long ago you began to weigh and ponder all this, and that you are fully determined, by the grace of God, to devote yourself wholly to his service, so that as you daily follow the rule and teaching of our Lord and grow into his likeness, God may sanctify the lives of all with whom you have to do.

And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must make the declarations we put to you.

Do you accept the Holy Scriptures as revealing all things necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? Ordinands I do so accept them.

Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies that will deepen your faith and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the gospel? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you lead Christ’s people in proclaiming his glorious gospel, so that the good news of salvation may be heard in every place? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you faithfully minister the doctrine and sacraments of Christ as the Church of England has received them, so that the people committed to your charge may be defended against error and flourish in the faith? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you, knowing yourself to be reconciled to God in Christ, strive to be an instrument of God’s peace in the Church and in the world? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you endeavour to fashion your own life and that of your household according to the way of Christ, that you may be a pattern and example to Christ’s people? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

20 Will you work with your fellow servants in the gospel for the sake of the kingdom of God? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you accept and minister the discipline of this Church, and respect authority duly exercised within it? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

Will you then, in the strength of the Holy Spirit, continually stir up the gift of God that is in you, to make Christ known among all whom you serve? Ordinands By the help of God, I will.

The congregation stands. The ordinands all turn to face the congregation.

Bishop Brothers and sisters, you have heard how great is the charge that these ordinands are ready to undertake, and you have heard their declarations. Is it now your will that they should be ordained? All It is.

Will you continually pray for them? All We will.

Will you uphold and encourage them in their ministry? All We will.

The ordinands turn back to face the bishop, who continues, addressing them

In the name of our Lord we bid you remember the greatness of the trust that is now to be committed to your charge. Remember always with thanksgiving that the treasure now to be entrusted to you is Christ’s own flock, bought by the shedding of his blood on the cross. It is to him that you will render account for your stewardship of his people.

You cannot bear the weight of this calling in your own strength, but only by the grace and power of God. Pray therefore that your heart may daily be enlarged and your understanding of the Scriptures enlightened.

Pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit. 21 The bishops move into the nave where they and the ordinands kneel; the congregation sits. All pray silently for a while.

VENI CREATOR

Veni Creator is sung by the choir

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire; thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessèd unction from above is comfort, life and fire of love; enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soilèd face with the abundance of thy grace; keep far our foes, give peace at home; where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but one; that through the ages all along this may be our endless song:

Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

22 THE LITANY

Morning: Led by Caroline Heath-Taylor Afternoon: Led by Beth Perkins

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father.

We pray for the peace of the world; for the leaders of the nations; for freedom from poverty and oppression; for refuges and asylum seekers; and for the relief of all who live amidst tragedy or natural disaster. Lord, in your mercy, All hear our prayer.

We pray for your Church and her leaders; for the worshipping communities represented amongst us here, today; and for Phil, Diane, Patrick, James, Becky, Anna, Julie, Vlada, Sean, Tim, Sue, Kath, Ben, whom you have called to be priests. Lord, in your mercy, All hear our prayer.

Sustain and heal all who are suffering in body, mind or spirit; comfort those who mourn; and, in this time of global pandemic, continue to inspire and strengthen all who are working towards the prevention of Covid-19 and who care for those who are sick. Lord, in your mercy, All hear our prayer.

Lord, hear our prayers and strengthen us in your service, with hearts filled with longing for your kingdom. All Amen.

23 THE ORDINATION PRAYER

The ordinands continue to kneel; the bishop stands to pray

Bishop We praise and glorify you, almighty Father, because in your infinite love you have formed throughout the world a holy people for your own possession, a royal priesthood, a universal Church.

We praise and glorify you because you have given us your only Son Jesus Christ, the image of your eternal and invisible glory, the firstborn of all creation and head of the Church.

We praise and glorify you that by his death he has overcome death; and that, having ascended into heaven, he has given his gifts abundantly, to equip your holy people for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ. And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants, whom we ordain in your name, to share as priests in the ministry of the gospel of Christ, the Apostle and High Priest of our faith, and the Shepherd of our souls.

Therefore, Father, through Christ our Lord we pray:

As the prayer continues, the ordinands move forward and kneel before the bishop, who lays hands on the head of each ordinand, saying

Send down the Holy Spirit on your servant N for the office and work of a priest in your Church.

When the bishop has laid hands on all of those being ordained as priest, the prayer continues

24 Bishop Through your Spirit, heavenly Father, give these your servants grace and power to proclaim the gospel of your salvation and minister the sacraments of the new covenant. Renew them in holiness, and give them wisdom and discipline to work faithfully with those committed to their charge.

In union with their fellow servants in Christ, may they reconcile what is divided, heal what is wounded and restore what is lost.

May they declare your blessings to your people; may they proclaim Christ’s victory over the powers of darkness, and absolve in Christ’s name those who turn to him in faith; so shall a people made whole in Christ offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you, our God and Father, to whom, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, belong glory and honour, worship and praise, now and for ever. All Amen.

THE GIVING OF THE BIBLE

The newly ordained stand. The Archdeacons give a Bible to each of them on behalf of the bishop, who then says

Bishop Receive this book, as a sign of the authority which God has given you this day to preach the gospel of Christ and to minister his holy sacraments.

25 THE WELCOME

The Dean of Guildford addresses the newly ordained priests, saying

God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

The newly ordained turn to face the congregation as all respond

All We welcome you as ambassadors for Christ: let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

The congregation welcomes the newly ordained with applause.

26 PREPARATION OF THE TABLE TAKING OF THE BREAD AND WINE

ANTHEM

As the choir sings the anthem the table is prepared, and bread and wine are placed upon it. The bishop takes the bread and wine.

View Me, Lord, a work of Thine; Shall I then lie drowned in night? Might Thy grace in me but shine, I should seem made all of light.

Cleanse me Lord that I may kneel At thine altar pure and white They that once thy mercies feel Gaze no more on earth’s delight.

Worldly joys like shadows fade, When the heavenly light appears; But the covenants Thou hast made, Endless, know nor days, nor years.

In Thy word, Lord, is my trust, To Thy mercies fast I fly; Though I am but clay and dust, Yet Thy grace can lift me high.

27 All stand THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Bishop The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right and good, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise through your Son Jesus Christ, our great high priest. He was lifted up for us on the cross that he might reveal your glory and draw all people to himself. You exalted him to your right hand on high and through your Holy Spirit you sent upon your people a rich diversity of gifts. From this royal priestly people you raise up ministers to proclaim your word, to care for your people and to be the stewards of your holy mysteries. You call them to serve the world your Son redeemed and build up his body the Church to be his bride. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

Choir Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 28 Bishop We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross.

Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

Deacon Great is the mystery of faith: All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

29 Bishop Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.

Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with Thomas and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven.

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. All Amen.

All remain THE LORD’S PRAYER standing Bishop As our Saviour taught us, so we pray All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

30 BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The bishop breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, Because we all share in the one bread.

GIVING OF COMMUNION

The body of Christ keep you in eternal life. All Amen.

Holy, there is no one like you, there in none beside you. Open up my eyes in wonder and show me who you are, and fill me with your heart, and lead me in your love to those around me.

Return to the beginning of the song and repeat.

I will build my life upon your love. It is a firm foundation. I will put my trust in you alone, and I will not be shaken.

I will build my life upon your love...

Holy, there is no one like you, there is none beside you. Open up my eyes in wonder and show me who you are, and fill me with your heart, and lead me in your love to those around me.

Holy, there is no one like...

32 I will build my life upon your love. It is a firm foundation. I will put my trust in you alone, and I will not be shaken.

I will build my life upon your love...

SONG Ten thousand reasons

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul, Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning. It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me let me be singing when the evening comes.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul; Worship his Holy name. Sing like never before O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name.

33 You’re rich in love, and You’re slow to anger, Your name is great, and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul...

And on that day when my strength is failing the end draws near and my time has come. Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then for evermore.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul...

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul...

Worship Your holy name, worship Your holy name.

Words and music: Matt Redman (b. 1974) and Jonas Myrin (b. 1982)

O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: be thou ever near me, my Master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.

35 O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend.

O let me see thy footmarks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone. O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend.

The newly ordained priests, clergy and bishop depart.

After the service, members of the congregation are asked to remain in their places until the choir has processed out, and the other processions have vacated the side aisles of the nave.

You are very welcome to remain seated and listen to the organ voluntary.

If the weather is fine, the newly ordained priests will be on the South Lawn afterwards (exit the cathedral through the west doors, and turn left twice to find them).
