Head of Mission Enabler Team Application Pack May 2021 Post title: Head of Mission Enabler Team Hours: Full time (1.0 FTE) Dear Applicant, Welcome to the pack for the role of Head of Mission Enabler Team in the Diocese of Guildford! I am so glad you are considering joining this new relatively new team, and please be assured of our prayers for you and the other potential candidates as together we seek God’s man or woman for the post. This is a strange but exciting time in the diocese, with the opportunities and challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought at a time in the life of the diocese when we had launched a new strategy in 2016 (Transforming Church, Transforming Lives) and a new process, the Parish Needs Process, that was to be launched in the summer of 2020. We now find ourselves with a new missional need, opportunity and to some extent energy in many of our churches, chaplaincies and schools, especially with the planned visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury in September with the expressed purpose of leading us in evangelism. In the couple of years leading up to the pandemic, we had moved our diocesan teams into new, attractive, open plan offices on the University of Surrey Research Park; and we embarked on a major review of the services we offer, seeking to ensure that the diocesan strategy gets well embedded, that our resources are efficiently managed, and that Church House Guildford is genuinely scratching where the parishes are itching. One outcome of the major review at Church House Guildford was that of a new process, the Parish Needs Process. In this process, a Mission Enabler guides every church through a journey of discernment towards a new/renewed vision and Church Development Plan, ready for the Archdeacons biennial Visitation. The Mission Enabler team, made up of posts with a variety of specialisms, is then available to act as consultants going forward. We believe this will release faith, energy, hope and resources for church renewal, health and growth. It is a new team of six posts with a new sense of purpose and a clear plan. We are currently recruiting to the ME Youth and ME Communities, and hope that the Head of the ME Team will be involved in the interviews of both posts following her/his appointment. We are also in the process of recruiting a new ME Stewardship later in the summer. The challenge is great, but the potential is huge. Every blessing, Revd Dr Peter Harwood Director of Mission Job description - Head of Mission Enabler Team Context The Mission Enabler team is part of the Mission Team, whose focus is to enable every parish to reach its full potential under the Parish Needs Process (PNP) - a systematic approach to encouraging greater focus and fruitfulness in all of our parishes, chaplaincies and schools. The Head of the Mission Enabler (ME) Team, reporting directly to the Diocesan Director of Mission, leads a team of multi-disciplinary Mission Enablers, all of whom will play a key role in the implementation and support of the PNP. There are seven in the team – Head of ME Team, ME – Evangelism (0.8FTE), ME – Children, ME – Youth (0.8FTE), ME – Communities, ME- Stewardship (0.7FTE) and ME – Fresh Expressions and Church Planting. • All Mission Enablers will spend a portion of their time leading and facilitating vision days, journeying alongside and supporting parishes on the formation of their CDPs as well as identifying resources to support their implementation. The Mission Enabler Lead will spend approx. 75% of their time on this activity as well as participating in key forums, such as deanery or synod meetings. The Mission Enabler (Evangelism) will spend approx. 95% of their time on this activity, and Mission Enablers (with specialisms) will spend approx. 25% of their time on this activity, all allocated by the Head of Mission Enabler Team. • The Head of the Mission Enabler Team will spend the remaining time on leadership, management and co-ordination of activities, both for the Mission Enablers and for the volunteer Mission Advisers and diocesan led initiatives (e.g. Setting God’s People Free). Both the Head of the Mission Enabler Team and the Mission Enabler (Evangelism) will also support the development and provision of consultancy services provided by the Mission Enabler Team in response to needs. • The Mission Enablers will spend approx. 75% of their time providing consultancy services to parishes in their specific area of specialism - Evangelism; Youth; Children & Families & Stewardship. ME Communities and ME Fresh Expressions & Church Planting will also provide consultancy services, but have some additional responsibilities too. These services will be in response to needs and will be allocated by the Parish Co-ordination Team. • Guildford diocese is committed to the House of Bishop’s vision for Setting God’s People Free, and Growing Faith in churches, schools and households. The Growing Faith initiative recognises that mission to children and young people is most effective when churches, schools and households work together to engage and encourage children in their faith and discipleship. Growing Faith will form a key component in the PNP. The Head of Mission Enabler Team will work closely with the Diocesan Director of Education to identify strategic opportunities where Church and Community Schools can contribute to the formation of the CDP within a parish so children and young people are engaged effectively by both the local church and the school within the parish. Job Purpose • To resource and support parishes in strategic church leadership and the embedding of Transforming Church, Transforming Lives. • To facilitate and support the Parish Needs Process by ensuring that parish priorities are identified, reflected in a well-documented Church Development Plans (CDPs) that clearly articulates anticipated outcomes and the needs (resources and services) to support its implementation. • To provide leadership, co-ordination and support to a team of skilled Mission Enablers (currently 5.3 FTEs) and volunteer Mission Advisers. • To further the Growing Faith agenda by ensuring the PNP routinely confers with local Church and Community Schools (in particular their School Development plans) and promoting the ME (Children and Families) as the ME Team lead in the Growing Faith strategy. This will involve working with the DDE and Education team to engage Church and Community schools as part of their work in helping to support the PNBP. Accountable to • Diocesan Director of Mission Responsible for • Mission Enabler team of 5.3 FTEs: Mission Enabler - Evangelism (0.8 FTE); Mission Enabler - Youth (0.8 FTE); Mission Enabler- Children & Families (1FTE); Mission Enabler - Stewardship (0.7 FTE); Church Planting & Fresh Expressions Adviser (1FTE) Key relationships Internal-facing: • To work collaboratively with: o Bishop’s Leadership team: Bishops of Guildford and Dorking; Archdeacons of Surrey and Dorking; Director of Mission; Diocesan Secretary; Dean of Guildford, Diocesan Director of Education, HR and Safeguarding Director o Diocesan Education Team o Archdeacons o Parish Co-ordination Team (PCT) o Training Lead o Communications Team o All Mission, Operations and Education Team members Parish-facing: • Incumbents and church leadership teams across the Diocese of Guildford • Area Deans • Parish teams and their staff • Church and community schools; head teachers and governing bodies External: • Ministry Division at Church House Westminster • Peer group roles in other dioceses • Other organisations with best practice resources Responsibilities: Parish Needs Process • To systematically draw alongside parishes by deanery (shared with ME Evangelism), meeting with each incumbent on a two year cycle (approximately 36-40 pre-meetings pa) to establish at what stage each parish is in with respect to their Church Development Planning. To provide feedback and guidance to the Co-Ordination team such that this can be best reflected in the two year planning schedule for visitations, as well as the likely level, shape and type of Mission Enabler required in advance of a visitation. • To consult with the Education team to explore potential mission opportunities with local Church and Community schools • To journey alongside parishes (approximately 18-24pa) across the Diocese of Guildford, on a two- year cycle, to support them through the pre-determined stages of Church Development Planning required ahead of a Deanery Visitation. This will include: i. Review: to facilitate discussions with parishes as they prayerfully consider their current and future mission. This involves co-ordinating and managing vision days and facilitating reflection on a church community’s strengths and weaknesses. ii. Choose: to support parishes as they identify their needs and decide on the priorities and mission that they believe God is calling them over the next four years or so. iii. Plan: to support parishes as they develop an effective and tailored Church Development Plan (CDP), providing advice, challenge and encouragement. iv. Act: to journey alongside parishes as they move from prayer and planning into action. This involves assisting parishes to document their CDPs clearly and concisely, to set realistic targets and deadlines for the various aspects of their plans, to assign responsibility for actions and provide accountability for their commitments and plans. • To ensure that CDPs clearly reflect the needs the church has for support, translating these into service types, ensuring that this information is communicated to the PCT ahead of the Deanery Visitation.
