It has its own students go to regain any lost police force, its own fire department, its equilibrium? own hospital (of sorts). There are coffee ——— — — ——— —— —— —— shops, rooming houses (called dormitories), even a barbershop and a laundromat. Yet, amidst all the hustle and bustle and city-planning by the powers that be, one necessity has been shunted to the background. UCSB has no park. True, it has recreation fields, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, but no place where a student can take a half-hour walk away from the books, tests and roommates, if need be. We feel that the quasi-island across the lagoon from the UCen should be retained in its present state to meet this defnite need of the UCSB student body. In the past there have been various proposals, some of which never got beyond the dorm room bull session stage, others as far as the floor of Leg Council. Everything from a bridge across the lagoon to picnic tables to total change of the area, complete with lights, fireplaces, running water, and outhouses, has been suggested. We most emphatically urge, request and beseech any and all those who have power over the area not to touch it. We need this sanctuary from the groves of academe.
