    Urban Geology in the English Midlands No. 2 Building Birmingham: A tour in three parts of the building stones used in the city centre. Part 2: Centenary Square to Brindleyplace Ruth Siddall, Julie Schroder and Laura Hamilton This area of central Birmingham has undergone significant redevelopment over the last two decades. Centenary Square, the focus of many exercises, realised and imagined, of civic centre planning is dominated by Symphony Hall and new Library of Birmingham (by Francine Houben and completed in 2013) and the areas west of Gas Street Basin are unrecognisable today from the derelict industrial remains and factories that were here in the 1970s and 80s. Now this region is a thriving cultural and business centre. This walking tour takes in the building stones used in old and new buildings and sculpture from Centenary Square, along Broad Street to Oozells Square, finishing at Brindleyplace. Brindleyplace; steps are of Portland Stone and the paving is York Stone, a Carboniferous sandstone. The main source on architecture, unless otherwise cited is Pevsner’s Architectural Guide (Foster, 2007) and information on public artworks is largely derived from Noszlopy & Waterhouse (2007). This is the second part in a three-part series of guides to the building stones of Birmingham City Centre, produced for the Black Country Geological Society. The walk extends the work of Shilston (1994), Robinson (1999) and Schroder et al. (2015). The walk starts at the eastern end of Centenary Square, at the Hall of Memory.     NEWS Ref: 07/19/CB 13 June 2019 Trams to Centenary Square a step nearer as half of track now in place for phase one of Birmingham Westside Metro extension The first pieces of tram track have been laid along Paradise Circus marking a significant step forward in the extension of the West Midlands Metro network. Forty-six metres of twin track have been installed along the curved section of the A38, which closed to traffic in summer 2018 to allow these essential Metro works to take place. It means that track for the first phase of the extension, which will run from Grand Central to Centenary Square, is now halfway complete. Paradise Circus was closed in both directions to facilitate the Metro construction from Victoria Square to Centenary Square and is set to reopen later this year as testing, commissioning and driver training takes place. Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said: "This milestone is yet another sign of progress on this extension and shows we are on track to have trams running to Centenary Square by the end of this year. But this is just a small part of the story, we are delivering a revolution in transport for the people of the West Midlands with huge investment in new rail, tram, rapid bus and cycling over the next few years.” Councillor Waseem Zaffar, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Birmingham City Council, added: “This Metro extension is set to bring fantastic benefits to the city, helping to strengthen economic growth and better connect people to other areas of the region, making it easier for those living, working and travelling in the area to get around.
