  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

This project analyzed five post- Franco films that dealt with the issue of the Spanish Civil War or Franco regime to determine if they were a counter to official political discourse on the subject. In addition to analyzing the films themselves, research was also done on a variety of official discourse pertaining to the recovery of memory in Spain. Upon examination it became clear that the overarching discourse in Spain is a refusal to address the issues of the past.

  • A Certain Tendency of the French Cinema Francois Truffaut
A CERTAIN TENDENCY OF THE FRENCH CINEMA FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT These notes have no other object than to attempt to define a certain tendency of the French cinema - a tendency called "psychological realism" - and to sketch its limits. If the French cinema exists by means of about a hundred films a year, it is well understood that only ten or twelve merit the attention of critics and cinephiles, the attention, therefore of "Cahiers." These ten or twelve films constitute what has been prettily named the "Tradition of Quality"; they force, by their ambitiousness, the admiration of the foreign press, defend the French flag twice a year at Cannes and at Venice where, since 1946, they regularly carry off medals, golden lions and grands prix. With the advent of "talkies," the French cinema was a frank plagiarism of the American cinema. Under the influence of Scarface, we made the amusing Pepe Le Moko. Then the French scenario is most clearly obliged to Prevert for its evolution: Quai Des Brumes (Port Of Shadows) remains the masterpiece of poetic realism. The war and the post-war period renewed our cinema. It evolved under the effect of an internal pressure and for poetic realism - about which one might say that it died closing Les Portes De La Nuit behind it - was substituted psychological realism, illustrated by Claude Autant-Lara, Jean Dellannoy, Rene Clement, Yves Allegret and Marcel Pagliero. SCENARISTS' FILMS If one is willing to remember that not so long ago Delannoy filmed Le Bossu and La Part De L'Ombre, Claude Autant-Lara Le Plombier Amoureux and Lettres D Amour, Yves Allegret La Boite Aux Reves and Les Demons De L’Aube, that all these films are justly recognized as strictly commercial enterprises, one will admit that, the successes or failures of these cineastes being a function of the scenarios they chose, La Symphonie Pastorale, Le Diable Au Corps (Devil In The Flesh), Jeux Interdits (Forbidden Games), Maneges, Un Homme Marche Dans La Ville, are essentially scenarists' films.

  • 'There Be Dragons' Director Takes Full Responsibility for Film
‘There Be Dragons’ director takes full responsibility for film WASHINGTON – Roland Joffe, director of “There Be Dragons,” the new movie that dramatizes the early life of St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, says he takes full responsibility for the finished product. “The responsibility of what’s in this movie is mine entirely. Whatever people think about it, they are going to have to lay it on my door. They certainly can’t lay it on Opus Dei’s door,” Joffe said. “I really shouldn’t worry about my interpretation with my own spirituality. If there was truth in what he (St. Josemaria) was saying, that truth would shine through any kind of lens I could put on it. What I did was bring a very ordinary human being’s view of what that truth might be.” Joffe added he had doubts about making the film, but not because of its connection with Opus Dei, which has been a target of criticism over the decades – most notably through the book and movie “The Da Vinci Code.” “I had grave doubts whether I was up for this film in terms of my knowledge of religion,” he said. “Religion is an immensely rich and extraordinary experience, and I thought about how I could bring something new to that experience.” Joffe added, “There will certainly be an anti-Opus Dei bias because (St.) Josemaria founded Opus Dei. The movie is not intricately about Opus Dei, it is about something that was born out of Josemaria’s thinking and something that he created and loved very much.
