The Holy See
The Holy See POPE FRANCISANGELUSLibrary of the Apostolic Palace Sunday, 31 January 2021[Multimedia] Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buongiorno ! Today’s Gospel passage (cf. Mk 1:21-28) tells of a typical day in Jesus’ ministry; in particular, it is the Sabbath, a day dedicated to rest and prayer: people went to the synagogue. In the synagogue of Capernaum, Jesus reads and comments on the Scriptures. Those present are attracted by his manner of speaking; their astonishment is great because he shows an authority that is different to that of the scribes (v. 22). Furthermore, Jesus shows himself to be powerful in his deeds as well. Indeed, a man of the synagogue lashes out, addressing him as the One sent by God: He recognizes the evil spirit, orders him to leave that man, and thus drives him out (vv. 23-26). The two characteristic elements of Jesus’ action can be seen here: preaching, and the thaumaturgic work of healing: He preaches and heals. Both of these aspects stand out in the passage of the evangelist Mark, but preaching is emphasized the most; exorcism is presented as a confirmation of his singular “authority” and his teaching. Jesus preaches with his own authority, as someone who possesses a doctrine derived from himself, and not like the scribes who repeated previous traditions and laws that had been handed down. They repeated words, words, words, only words: as the great singer Mina sang, [“Parole, parole, parole ”]; that is how they were. Just words. Instead in Jesus’ words have authority; Jesus is authoritative. And this touches the heart. -
Novena to St. Joachim and St. Anne
Saints Anne & Joachim ach year the Church venerates the memory of Saints Anne & Joachim Eon July 26th. An ancient story dating to the first centuries of the Church’s life recalls how Saints Anne & Joachim, like Abraham and Sarah, were scorned by their neighbors because they had no children. Years of longing did not weaken their trust in God, but grief eventually drove Saint Joachim into the wilderness to fast and pray. Saint Anne, remaining at home, dressed in mourning clothes and wept because she had no child of her own. Seeing her mistress distressed, a servant girl reminded Anne to put her trust in God. Saint Anne washed her face, put on her bridal clothes and went to a garden to plead with God for a child. Angels appeared to Saint Anne in her garden and Saint Joachim in the desert, promis- ing that, despite their old age, they would give birth to a child who would be known throughout the world. The new parents ran to meet one another at Jerusalem’s Golden Gate, and with a kiss rejoiced in the new life which God had promised would be theirs. Saints Anne and Joachim are powerful intercessors for all married couples, expectant mothers and married couples who are having difficulty conceiving, as well as all who have grown old. About the Mosaic The art of mosaic dates back some five thousand years to ancient Babylon. The mosaic of Saints Anne and Joachim, depicted on the cover of this novena, was made of an Italian glass called smalti. Its intentionally uneven surface makes it highly reflective. -

Memorial of Sts Joachim & Anne, Parents of the Bl
MEMORIAL OF STS JOACHIM & ANNE, PARENTS OF THE BL VIRGIN MARY QUEEN OF THE AMERICAS GUILD CONFERENCE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE, LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN 26 JULY 2014 Sir 44, 10-15 Ps 132, 11, 13-14, 17-18 Mt 13, 16-17 HOMILY Praised be Jesus Christ, now and for ever. Amen. How fitting that the feast day of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, should occur during our annual Queen of the Americas Guild Conference dedicated, this year, to the deeper reverence for Holy Matrimony and its fruit, family life. We count upon the intercession of Saints Joachim and Anne for all of our labors to foster holy marriages and sound family life. At the same time, we reflect upon their marriage and its incomparable fruit, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as an extraordinary expression of God’s plan for married life. The feast day of Saints Joachim and Anne leads us to reflect upon the truth that God chose to bring about our redemption through the family. He sent God the Son Who was incarnate in the womb of the Virgin Mary, the child of Saints Joachim and Anne, and the spouse of Saint Joseph. Through the Mystery of the Redemptive Incarnation, we are directly related to the maternal grandparents of Jesus, Son of God and Son of Mary. The words of the Book of Sirach about the “godly men” in the history of salvation apply, with special meaning, to Saints Joachim and Anne: These were godly men whose virtues have not been forgotten; Their wealth remains in their families, their heritage with their descendants; Through God’s covenant with them their family endures, their posterity for their sake.1 1 Sir 44, 10-12. -
How the Markan Reader Understands Jesus Through John/Elijah
John, Elijah, or One of the Prophets: How the Markan Reader Understands Jesus Through John/Elijah by Donald Stephen Black A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Trinity College and the Biblical Department of the Toronto School of Theology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy awarded by the University of St. Michael's College. © Copyright By Donald Stephen Black 2012 John, Elijah, or One of the Prophets: How the Markan Reader Understands Jesus Through John/Elijah Donald Stephen Black Doctor of Philosophy University of St. Michael’s College 2012 Abstract A primary concern of the Gospel of Mark is the identity and fate of Jesus. In service to this, the Gospel develops a secondary interest in the identity and fate of John The Baptist. John, as Elijah redivivus, provides reasons to believe that Jesus is the Christ, provides a grid by which Jesus’ ministry and identity can be comprehended, and helps justify and explicate the unexpected death of the Messiah. This is accomplished through various literary devices throughout the narrative. For them to be fully effective it is necessary for the implied reader to be actively involved. The fact that Jesus’ identity and John’s identity are not adequately acknowledged within the narrative suggests that the plot moves towards a recognition of both of these figures. Jesus’ identity and John’s identity are related, in such a way that a recognition of John’s witness and identity leads towards a recognition of Jesus’ identity and fate. To understand John is to understand Jesus, and to misunderstand John is to misunderstand Jesus. -

The Person of Holy Virgin Mary in Christianity and in Qu'ran (Koran)
The person of Holy Virgin Mary in Christianity and in Qu’ran (Koran) La persona de la Virgen María en el Cristianismo y en el Corán A pessoa da Virgem Maria no Cristianismo e no Alcorão Eirini ARTEMI1 Abstract: The Holy Virgin Mary or Theotokos is a very significant person for Christians. She is the mother of the enfleshed (sesarkomenos) Son of God. Theotokos thus refers to the Incarnation, when the Second Person of the Holy Trinity took on human nature in addition to his pre-existing divine nature, this being made possible by the cooperation of Virgin Mary. Theotokos is not only the mother of God, but the mother of every Christian. The Christians and mainly Orthodoxs and Roman Catholics think that the Virgin is a very significant part of their religion, of their life. Christians do not “worship” the Virgin Mary. They “venerate” her and show her great honor. She has the all- merciful power of driving away from us, at her sign, the sub-celestial spirits of evil–those ever-vigilant and ardent sowers of enmity and malice among men. She is the highest of all creatures, the Mediatrix for the whole race of mankind. Strive to train everyone in the spirit of humility, for she was humbler that any mortal, and only looks lovingly upon the humble. The Quran, the holy book for Muslims honor holy Virgin Mary too. Muslims think that Virgin Mary is the mother of Prophet Christ. For them, Christ is not God. The Archbishop of Albania Anastasios who was teaching about the religion of Muslims supports that Muslims honour Holy Virgin more than some Christian Confessions of Protestants and some “christian” heresies as Jehovah witness.
