Christmas Around the World Christmas in Ethiopia Ethiopia uses the Julian calendar, therefore they celebrate Christmas or Ganna (or Genna) on January 7th. Most Ethiopians do not decorate with trees or lights, nor do they all give gifts. They spend this time eating good food, going to church, spending time with family, and playing games. They dress in a traditional white garment called a netela and some walk to church at 4 AM. Others go to church on Christmas Eve at 6 PM. ABSTRACT THE ORIGIN, DEVELOPMENT, AND HISTORY OF THE NORWEGIAN SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH FROM THE 1840s TO 1887 by Bjorgvin Martin Hjelvik Snorrason Adviser: Jerry Moon ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Title: THE ORIGIN, DEVELOPMENT, AND HISTORY OF THE NORWEGIAN SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH FROM THE 1840s TO 1887 Name of researcher: Bjorgvin Martin Hjelvik Snorrason Name and degree of faculty adviser: Jerry Moon, Ph.D. Date completed: July 2010 This dissertation reconstructs chronologically the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Norway from the Haugian Pietist revival in the early 1800s to the establishment of the first Seventh-day Adventist Conference in Norway in 1887. The present study has been based as far as possible on primary sources such as protocols, letters, legal documents, and articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers from the nineteenth century. A contextual-comparative approach was employed to evaluate the objectivity of a given source. Secondary sources have also been consulted for interpretation and as corroborating evidence, especially when no primary sources were available. The study concludes that the Pietist revival ignited by the Norwegian Lutheran lay preacher, Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824), represented the culmination of the sixteenth- century Reformation in Norway, and the forerunner of the Adventist movement in that country.

    How the Christmas Spider Invented Tinsel There once was a small family living in a small house on the edge of a small town. Unfortunately, this year’s holiday was set to be a sombre affair for them. They worked very hard, but bills always seemed to stack up. However, as the shops closed on Christmas Eve, the butchers didn’t want to waste anything and sold Marie the last goose at a bargain price even she could afford. It was a scrawny bird, but more meat than the family had seen in several weeks. She trudged home, fighting the snow the whole way. We may have no decorations or presents, but at least we can eat. When she arrived at her tiny home, she was greeted at the door by excited squeals. “Mummy look what we found!” The twins Amanda and Adam grabbed her hand and pulled her into the living room. A small pine tree propped in a pail leaned against the wall. “Wherever did you find that?” Marie gasped. They jumped and clapped. “No one wanted it. The florist closed up early today and threw it in the alley. It’s a bit wonky but one side is still good.” Adam twisted the pail of sand to show where the branches at the back were all broken. A spider ran down one of the bent limbs and jumped on his arm. He giggled. “Look, we got a Christmas pet, too.” Amanda shuddered. “You can keep that present.” Adam put the spider back in the tree and twisted the pot around so the broken branches were hidden.

He holds anything other than money in contempt, including friendship, love and the Christmas season. Major themes • The story deals with two of Dickens' recurrent themes, social injustice and poverty. • Dickens wrote in the wake of British government changes to the welfare system known as the Poor Laws, changes which required among other things, welfare applicants to "work" on treadmills, as Scrooge points out. • Scrooge embodies selfishness and indifference to the poor.     MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 22, No. 1 (2020) 1 Pilgrims to Thule: Religion and the Supernatural in Travel Literature about Iceland Matthias Egeler Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Abstract The depiction of religion, spirituality, and/or the ‘supernatural’ in travel writing, and more generally interconnections between religion and tourism, form a broad and growing field of research in the study of religions. This contribution presents the first study in this field that tackles tourism in and travel writing about Iceland. Using three contrasting pairs of German and English travelogues from the 1890s, the 1930s, and the 2010s, it illustrates a number of shared trends in the treatment of religion, religious history, and the supernatural in German and English travel writing about Iceland, as well as a shift that happened in recent decades, where the interests of travel writers seem to have undergone a marked change and Iceland appears to have turned from a land of ancient Northern mythology into a country ‘where people still believe in elves’. The article tentatively correlates this shift with a change in the Icelandic self-representation, highlights a number of questions arising from both this shift and its seeming correlation with Icelandic strategies of tourism marketing, and notes a number of perspectives in which Iceland can be a highly relevant topic for the research field of religion and tourism.
