ANDERSON CANADA Mike Morris (retired) September 1992, Poland CURCULIO EDITORIAL COMMENTS Yes, this number of CURCULIO is late. It should have been prepared and sent out in September of 1996, but our museum has been going through a move to new facilities and things have been in turmoil. We are now settled in and most services are up and running again. The collections, which were packed away for the move, are also now accessible again. Seems that things went quite well and in fact our Entomology section fared quite well as the move into our new facilities resulted in a great deal more space than we already had. We’re now getting the laboratories prepared and should be back to full speed in the near future. Our mailing address has not changed! On another note, congratulations are in order for Rolf Oberprieler who has accepted the weevil systematics position at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. This will be a great new challenge for Rolf and one in which we can all be sure he will fare admirably. The Australian weevil fauna is exceptionally diverse and interesting and with the recent books by Elwood Zimmerman, a great base has been set for further and more detailed work on the fauna. I understand Rolf will be there sometime this summer. Now all he has to do is master ‘G’Day’ and ‘mate’ and he’ll have it made! Best wishes to Rolf and his family. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded. -

We performed Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony combined phylogenetic analyses with the main objective of testing higher-level relationships and the naturalness of the major Neotropical and Southern South American (Patagonia and Andes) tribes, including some members from other regions. We compiled a data matrix of 67 terminal units with 63 Entiminae species, as well as four outgroup taxa from Cyclominae, by 3522 molecular (from nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and mitochondrial 16S rDNA and COI gene sequences) and 70 morphological characters. The resulting trees recover a clade Entiminae with a monophyletic Cylydrorhinini and Premnotrypes branching off early. -

The Malacca Strait Separates Distinct Faunas of Poorly-Flying Cautires Net
The Malacca Strait separates distinct faunas of poorly-flying Cautires net-winged beetles Alice Jiruskova, Michal Motyka, Matej Bocek and Ladislav Bocak Laboratory of Molecular Systematics, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic ABSTRACT We investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of Cautires diversification on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra to understand if the narrow and frequently dry Malacca Strait separates different faunas. Moreover, we analyzed the origin of Cautires in Malayan and Sumatran mountains. We sampled 18 localities and present the mtDNA-based phylogeny of 76 species represented by 388 individuals. The phylogenetic tree was dated using mtDNA evolution rates and the ancestral ranges were estimated using the maximum likelihood approach. The phylogeny identified multiple lineages on the Malay Peninsula since the Upper Eocene (35 million years ago, mya) and a delayed evolution of diversity in Sumatra since the Upper Oligocene (26 mya). A limited number of colonization events across the Malacca Strait was identified up to the Pliocene and more intensive faunal exchange since the Pleistocene. The early colonization events were commonly followed by in situ diversification. As a result, the Malacca Strait now separates two faunas with a high species-level turnover. The montane fauna diversified in a limited space and seldom took part in colonization events across the Strait. Besides isolation by open sea or a savannah corridor, mimetic patterns could decrease the colonization capacity -

Cumming 2,3,4 , Yunchang Li1,5, Katharina Henze1, Stéphane Le Tirant2 & Sven Bradler 1 The insect order Phasmatodea is known for large slender insects masquerading as twigs or bark. In contrast to these so-called stick insects, the subordinated clade of leaf insects (Phylliidae) are dorso-ventrally flattened and therefore resemble leaves in a unique way. Here fi 1234567890():,; we show that the origin of extant leaf insects lies in the Australasian/Paci c region with subsequent dispersal westwards to mainland Asia and colonisation of most Southeast Asian landmasses. We further hypothesise that the clade originated in the Early Eocene after the emergence of angiosperm-dominated rainforests. The genus Phyllium to which most of the ~100 described species pertain is recovered as paraphyletic and its three non-nominate subgenera are recovered as distinct, monophyletic groups and are consequently elevated to genus rank. Suhardjono2, Michael Balke1,4 & Alexander Riedel5 The Sunda Arc forms an almost continuous chain of islands and thus a potential dispersal corridor between mainland Southeast Asia and Melanesia. However, the Sunda Islands have rather different geological histories, which might have had an important impact on actual dispersal routes and community assembly. Here, we reveal the biogeographical history of hyperdiverse and flightless Trigonopterus weevils. Different approaches to ancestral area reconstruction suggest a complex east to west range expansion. Out of New Guinea, Trigonopterus repeatedly reached the Moluccas and Sulawesi transgressing Lydekker′s Line. Sulawesi repeatedly acted as colonization hub for different segments of the Sunda Arc. West Java, East Java and Bali are recognized as distinct biogeographic areas. The timing and diversification of species largely coincides with the geological chronology of island emergence. Colonization was not inhibited by traditional biogeographical boundaries such as Wallace’s Line. Rather, colonization patterns support distance dependent dispersal and island age limiting dispersal. The Indo Australian Archipelago (IAA) is the geologically complex transition zone between Oriental and Australian biota and arguably the most biodiverse region on the planet1. Biogeographers ever since Wallace have sought to understand the mechanisms behind the high diversity of the IAA and its evolution in space and time. -
