Later, Mubarrad wrote a work which is not only didactic but a valuablecollection of poetic quotations. He also shareswith his rival and contemporary,Tha'lab, the honor of having contributedto the philological training of severalpoets. -

THE ROOTS OF UZBEKISTAN: NATION MAKING IN THE EARLY SOVIET UNION CAP PAPERS 161 (CERIA SERIES) Adeeb Khalid1 The political map of Central Asia with which we are all familiar—the “five Stans” north of Afghanistan and Iran—took shape between 1924 and 1936. The five states of today are each identified with an ethnic nation. A hundred years ago, it looked very different. The southern extremities of the Russian empire consisted of two provinces—Turkestan and the Steppe region—and two protectorates—Bukhara and Khiva—in which local potentates enjoyed considerable internal autonomy as long as they affirmed their vassalage to the Russian Empire. No ethnic or national names were attached to territories. Indeed, the ethnic nomenclature in the region was different and quite unstable. Outsider accounts of the period spoke of the population being composed of Sarts, Uzbeks, Kipchaks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Turcomans and other “tribes,” with different authors using different categorizations. Even the Russian imperial census of 1897 did not use a consistent set of labels across Central Asia. In Central Asian usage, on the other hand, the most common term for describing the indigenous community was “Muslims of Turkestan.” Where did the nationalized territorial entities come from and, more basically, from where did the national categories emerge? During the Cold War, we were comfortable with the explanation that the division of Central Asia into national republics as a classic form of divide and rule in which the Soviets destroyed the primordial unity of the region for their own ends. All too often, writers lay the blame at the feet of Stalin himself. -

Muslim Life in Central Asia, 1943-1985 Eren Murat Tasar, Harvard University, Visiting Research Fellow, Social Research Center, American University of Central Asia The period from World War II to the rise of Gorbachev saw important changes in the realms of Islamic practice, education, and social and moral norms in Soviet Central Asia. In particular, the establishment of four geographic “spiritual administrations” to oversee and manage Muslim religious life in the Soviet Union in 1943 1, the foundation of a special state committee to oversee the affairs of non-Orthodox faiths in 1944, and the opening of the country’s only legal madrasah in 1945 (in Bukhara, Uzbekistan) inaugurated a new chapter in the history of Islam in the Soviet Union. Subsequent decades saw the professionalization of a legally registered, ecclesiastical Islamic hierarchy affiliated with the party-state, as well as the growth of unregistered networks of Islamic teachers and prayer leaders. On a broader societal level, the increased prosperity of the Khrushchev and Brezhnev years (1953-1982) witnessed important social developments such as a sharp decrease in public observance of Islamic rituals and strictures (the prohibition of pork and alcohol consumption, for instance) and, in urban areas, a rise in interfaith marriage. Muslim identity, as well as the social and religious life of Muslim communities, evolved in Central Asia during the Soviet period. Anthropologists, historians, and political scientists studying Islam in Central Asia have debated the nature of this evolution in the realms of social, cultural and political life. Esboços, Florianópolis, v. 26, n. 42, p. 255-269, maio/ago. 2019. 255/452 ISSN 2175-7976 DOI https://doi.org/10.5007/2175-7976.2019v26n42p255 ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to propose a historiographical exercise through a Global History approach, more precisely, Connected History, trying to understand aspects of pre-modern chronology from a different perspective regarding geographical limits and Eurocentric traditions. Starting from the Battle of Talas, famous for putting Arabs and Chinese against each other, I will establish a connective narrative between East and West, highlighting how the year of 751 CE is paradigmatic regarding the formation of frontiers and patterns of political interaction. In order to demonstrate such pattern, I will analyse the presence of the ʾAbbāsids and the Tang in Central Asia, the crowning of Pippin the Short in Europe, and the destruction of the Exarchate of Ravenna and the Byzantine Iconoclasm. I hope this exercise demonstrates how synchronicity and global connections can be a viable historical approach, allowing us to understand and to relocate pre-modern periodisation beyond its Eurocentric roots. This chronological/ geographical shift has the potential to unravel wider, richer, and better-connected narratives and interpretations on pre-modern subjects, breaking with the traditional normalisation of Europe as the ruler to measure and define historical periods, especially the MiddleAges. -

Project Profile & Japan’s ODA Loan Uzbekistan Urgench Tashkent Turkmenistan Kyrgyzstan Samarkand Bukhara Tajikistan Afghanistan Project site Runway at Samarkand Airport 1.1 Background Under the division of labor system employed by the former Soviet Union Uzbekistan was positioned as a supplier of mineral resources and agricultural produce. In consequence, its external transport routes by rail, road and air, had basically been developed under Moscow-centric networks. With Uzbekistan’s air traffic, the majority of airports were decrepit, with problems including some cracking on runways, reductions in the reliability of air traffic control and safety systems, and difficulties securing spare parts for repairs. The airports were also failing to conform to the technical standards of ICAO (the International Civil Aviation Authority), the global benchmark for air safety. In addition, the economic turmoil that followed the breakup of the former Soviet Union in 1991 resulted in a sharp decline in passenger traffic in Uzbekistan. The country is the epicenter of Silk Road tours, and the three cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva (on the outskirts of Urgench) have flourished as oasis towns along the Silk Road and have a wealth of world-class tourist attractions. In 1997, the Uzbekistan government held celebrations to mark the 2,500th anniversary of Bukhara and Khiva with the aim of utilizing the nation’s resources to grow the tourist industry. Efforts to promote tourism were hampered by insufficient terminal facilities at the airports in the aforementioned three cities, and the airlines of various countries were experiencing difficulties flying into the airports due to the significant problems outlined above.
