    McLaughlin-Buick 1908 ~ 1942 Motoring Memories: McLaughlin-Buick Story and photo by Bill Vance When Robert McLaughlin started a one-man construction operation in his shed near Oshawa, Ontario in 1867, he couldn‘t have dreamed that he was planting the seeds of General Motors Corporation of Canada. The business expanded into wagons and carriages, built a reputation for quality, and eventually became the British Empire‘s largest carriage maker. Robert was joined in the enterprise by his teenage sons George and Samuel. Although Robert wasn‘t enthusiastic about the automobile business when cars came on the scene, he didn‘t stand in the way of his son Samuel, who was. After trying to have their own car designed, which failed when their engineer became ill, Sam reviewed several makes of cars. He struck a deal with William Durant of Flint, Michigan, America‘s largest carriage maker, whom Sam knew through that business. Durant held controlling interest in the Buick Motor Company of Flint, and McLaughlin signed a 15-year contract to purchase Buick running gear. With McLaughlin‘s expertise in building bodies, Sam knew he was in the car business. Shortly after signing the contract with McLaughlin, Durant formed the General Motors Co. in 1908 with Buick as its first building block. McLaughlin and Durant maintained a long, friendly relationship, resulting in not only the McLaughlin-Buick, but also in McLaughlin building Chevrolets beginning in 1916. The McLaughlin Motor Car Co. became General Motors of Canada in 1918. Production started late in 1907, with McLaughlin fitting the bodies to Buick running gear.

Buicks continued in favour for ambulance building through to 1947 first called, commenced operations on April 1, 1895, with two officers and a hand when GM-H (General Motors Holdens) ceased production of Holden built car bodies litter. Creating large tools to fabricate metal parts, the company was a powerhouse for much of the early to mid 20th century. Within the collection are photographs of their major products, guides, and corporate material. Language: English Repository: Bridgeport History Center Administrative History Founded in 1894 by Edward Payson Bullard Senior, the Bullard Machine Tool Company was a massive industrial player in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The company’s primary product of machine tools are understood as machines made to work on rigid material, such as metal, in order to create parts. Mechanical objects such as cars and aeroplanes usually have consitutent parts that are made on machine tools. In addition, machine tools create the same part over and over again, allowing for consistency in the part itself. During Bullard Sr.’s tenure in charge of the company, refined boring machines (meant to drill holes in metal to exacting accuracy) so that they could be used on a wider scale. This spirit of innovation continued when Edward Payson Bullard Jr. took over the company after his father’s passing in 1906. Under his tenure, the company invented the vertical turret lathe (an upright machine meant to rotate a piece on a specific rotation axis for various operations such as sanding, drilling, etc.) and the Mult-au-matic (a spindle machine with an automatic cutting process.) The Mult-au-matic in particular became very popular among automotive makers, and this is reflected in series 4 of the collection which highlights who was using Bullard machines and what they were making with them.
