Pollinator Portraits 2017 Photos: © Martin C D Speight Text: Martin C D Speight This guide has been assembled by the National Biodiversity Data Centre Pollinator portraits 2017 These portraits are not of bees, but of flies – European hoverflies, to be precise. In the landscape, hoverflies are small and can flit by unobserved. In the portraits we see them larger than life and can examine them at leisure. You are invited to send the portraits to friends and colleagues. Not so well known as bees, hoverflies play their own, and slightly different role in pollination. They are significant pollinators of various fruit trees and some other crops, like oil-seed rape. They also pollinate many wild flowers, including rare species not normally visited by bees. Hoverflies can be found in a very wide range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. As larvae about a third of them feed on greenfly, other plant bugs, or small caterpillars and are recognised as helping to prevent epidemic greenfly infestations in cereal crops like winter wheat. Another equally large group of species is plant-feeding; these hoverflies mine leaves, stem- bases, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs or corms of herb layer plants. The rest of them grow up on a diet of bacteria, algae or other micro-organisms, usually in water or damp situations of some sort. Almost without exception, as adults hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen, visiting the flowers of a very wide range of trees, shrubs and herb layer plants, including pollen-only flowers like those of grasses, sedges, oak trees and poppies. The names of the hoverflies depicted in each portrait, along with brief notes, are included at the end of this document. -

The Hoverfly Fauna of the Berici Hills: an Area of Rich Biodiversity in North-Eastern Italy
Bulletin of Insectology 70 (1): 101-110, 2017 ISSN 1721-8861 The hoverfly fauna of the Berici Hills: an area of rich biodiversity in north-eastern Italy Daniele SOMMAGGIO Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie - Entomologia, Università di Bologna, Italy Abstract The hoverfly community of the Berici Hills (Northern Italy) is compared with surrounding areas in order to evaluate the biodiver- sity conservation importance of this area. During the period 2009-2014 thirteen sites were sampled in the Berici Hills by means of Malaise traps, recording 143 species for this area. The syrphid list of species for the Berici Hills is compared with that in the sur- rounding areas by means of multivariate analysis; the biodiversity of the Berici Hills is set against that in the Po Plain using rare- faction and extrapolation curves. The species recorded in the Berici Hills included 52 not recorded from the adjacent areas, and in particular for the Po Plain. Several species are associated with Mediterranean habitats, in particular xeric grasslands, well repre- sented in the Berici Hills. Particularly interesting is the presence of several species expected for the Po Plain but probably extinct from this area. Despite its small area, the biodiversity of the Berici Hills is significantly higher than that of Po Plain. The sites of the Berici Hills are clearly separate from those of the Po Plain, underlining the peculiarity of the fauna of this area and its impor- tance for nature conservation. There are around 283 species of hoverfly found in the British Isles, and 176 of these have been recorded in Birmingham and the Black Country. This atlas contains tetrad maps of all of the species recorded in our area based on records held on the EcoRecord database. The records cover the period up to the end of 2019. They truly can be considered the gardener’s fiend as not only are they important pollinators but the larva of many species also help to control aphids! Great places to spot hoverflies are in flowery meadows on flowers such as knapweed, buttercup, hogweed or yarrow or in gardens on plants such as Canadian goldenrod, hebe or buddleia. Quite a few species are instantly recognisable while the appearance of some other species might make you doubt that it is even a hoverfly… Mimicry Many hoverfly species are excellent mimics of bees and wasps, imitating not only their colouring, but also often their shape and behaviour. Sometimes they do this to fool the bees and wasps so they can enter their nests to lay their eggs. Most species however are probably trying to fool potential predators into thinking that they are a hazardous species with a sting or foul taste, even though they are in fact harmless and perfectly edible. -

National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Measuring and Monitoring Pollinator Diversity along Elevation Gradients in Olympic and North Cascades National Parks Natural Resource Report NPS/NOCA/NRR—2018/1634 Introduction The vast majority of flowering plants rely on insect pollinators for successful reproduction (Ollerton et al. 2011). Native bees (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) are among the most efficient and diverse pollinators, with 4,000 species known in North America (Mader et al. 2011), while syrphid or flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) are represented by approximately 870 Nearctic species (Vockeroth and Thompson 1987). Despite the ecological importance of these pollinators and their potential vulnerability to a variety of environmental threats, their diversity, distribution, and natural history has remained largely unknown to scientists, resource managers, and visitors in most national parks. Bees and other pollinators are known to be at risk from various human-mediated threats such as habitat loss and alteration, invasive species, parasites, pesticides, and climate change (Potts et al. 2010; Goulson et al. 2015). Dramatic declines have been well-documented and publicized for honey bees (Natural Research Council 2006), but have also been observed among native bumble bees (Colla and Packer 2008, Cameron et al. 2011), and solitary bees (Burkle et al. 2013). Comparatively scant literature exists on the status of syrphid flies, although changes in species richness and composition pre-and post-1980 have been documented in Europe (Biesmeijer et al. 2006). Climate change is predicted to pose a significant threat to native pollinator communities, with potential consequences including range shifts, phenological decoupling of plant-pollinator networks, and population declines (Bartomeus et al.
