  • Sports in Pre-Modern and Early Modern Siam: Aggressive and Civilised Masculinities
Sports in Pre-Modern and Early Modern Siam: Aggressive and Civilised Masculinities Charn Panarut A thesis submitted in fulfilment of The requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology and Social Policy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of Sydney 2018 Statement of Authorship This dissertation is the copyrighted work of the author, Charn Panarut, and the University of Sydney. This thesis has not been previously submitted for any degree or other objectives. I certify that this thesis contains no documents previously written or published by anyone except where due reference is referenced in the dissertation itself. i Abstract This thesis is a contribution to two bodies of scholarship: first, the historical understanding of the modernisation process in Siam, and in particular the role of sport in the gradual pacification of violent forms of behaviour; second, one of the central bodies of scholarship used to analyse sport sociologically, the work of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning on sport and the civilising process. Previous studies of the emergence of a more civilised form of behaviour in modern Siam highlight the imitation of Western civilised conducts in political and sporting contexts, largely overlooking the continued role of violence in this change in Siamese behaviour from the pre- modern to modern periods. This thesis examines the historical evidence which shows that, from around the 1900s, Siamese elites engaged in deliberate projects to civilise prevalent non-elites’ aggressive conducts. This in turn has implications for the Eliasian understanding of sports and civilising process, which emphasises their unplanned development alongside political and economic changes in Europe, at the expense of grasping the deliberate interventions of the Siamese elites.

As the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 came to an end, Tokyo residents bid them farewell with a final visit to the Olympic Agora, a cultural hub celebrating Olympism, which closed on Sunday 15 August. Spearheaded by the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage (OFCH), the IOC’s division for the arts, culture and heritage, the project featured a series of visual art installations, exhibitions and digital programmes on the Olympic spirit and values, including the landmark commission of a permanent, site-specific sculpture that will remain in Tokyo’s central Nihonbashi district. 1 The Olympic Agora was adapted at the outset to ensure staff and visitor safety, in compliance with local and national COVID-19 rules and countermeasures. On-site visitor numbers were strictly controlled through an online pre-booking system. Over the course of its six-week opening, the Olympic Agora welcomed thousands of local visitors – giving many unable to attend the Games’ sports competitions an opportunity to engage directly with Olympic culture – and even larger regional and international audiences via its digital programmes. The installations and activations were complemented by a robust digital programme, including virtual exhibitions available on the Olympic Agora website and The Olympic Museum’s social media channels for local and global audiences. The website remains accessible for global audiences until 15 October.

  • Volume 13 / December / 2018
Volume 13 / December / 2018 Editor’s Note ************************************************************************ What an honor to be the new editor of Asian Sport Management Review (ASMR), the official journal of the Asian Association for Sport Management (AASM). First of all, I will follow the excellent work done by past chief editors, Dr. Joe Chin-Hsung Kao, Dr. Kong Ting Yeh, Cheng Nan Kang, and Dr. Chen-Yueh Chen, and then work on further improvement of this academic journal. The ASMR starting from 2008, is now coming to the 13th volume. The ASMR would not be successful academic journal without the contributions of past chief editors. It is difficult to improve the quality and quantity of this journal alone by me, but I will accomplish it with great assistance from the deputy chief editor, Dr. Daichi Oshimi, and of course the president of AASM, Dr. Etsuko Ogasawara. The volume 13 is made up of six unique articles. The topics consist of issues regarding online media strategy in sport settings, brand image of sport teams, management of a professional road cycling team, an athlete development model in figure skating, relationships between the local administrative organizations and regional sport organization, and successful management of a health bike course. Most of editorial works for those six articles have been completed by the former chief editor, Dr. Chen Yueh Chen. I would like to express my appreciation for his great contribution. As you might notice, all the articles were written and submitted by scholars from Thailand and their colleagues. I pay homage to the hard work of researchers in Thailand.
