Al despertar de su somnolencia un sentimiento de malestar le inunda porque todavía permanece en Saigón, mientras que su deseo más inminente es aceptar alguna misión que le mande de nuevo a la jungla. Y esto parece cumplirse cuando dos soldados comunican al capitán el deseo que tienen unos altos mandos de reunirse con él, aunque no se le explica el motivo de tal reclamo. En el transcurso de la comida con los superiores se le encarga la tarea de remontar Vietnam río arriba en un barco de patrulla de la marina y descubrir la pista del coronel Walther E. Kurtz. Una vez que lo encuentre deberá infiltrarse en su equipo con los medios disponibles y acabar con su mando. Las razones que se le exponen es que Kurtz se ha vuelto completamente loco y no obedece las órdenes de los superiores, habiendo creado un peculiar ejército de indígenas que lo veneran como un dios. La confirmación a tales acusaciones se evidencian en la cinta que Willard escucha del coronel y en el abundante material que se le suministra. Willard no tiene más remedio que aceptar la misión, ante las acusaciones de asesinato que se le imputan de cuatro supuestos dobles agentes. Evidentemente, la misión nunca ha existido ni existirá a efectos de informe. El protagonista se embarca en un patrullero para no levantar sospechas, aunque el verdadero problema que se le plantea es la tripulación que se le ha suministrado: Chef, un cocinero de fuerte temperamento: Lance Johnson, un “surfer” que gran parte de su tiempo está bajo el efecto de las drogas; Limpio, un joven de diecisiete años que no es consciente de la situación en la que se encuentra; y Chief, el jefe de la embarcación, un hombre estricto. Durante la travesía en el barco, Willard va estudiando toda la información que se le ha suministrado de Kurtz y no comprende cómo un soldado con un historial tan impecable ha podido convertirse en lo que es ahora. Sus reflexiones se ven interrumpidas por la aparición de la Primera del Noveno de Caballería, una patrulla de helicópteros que tiene que protegerles treinta kilómetros más arriba del río. Cuando llegan al lugar de desembarco comprueban la realidad de una zona devastada por las llamas, el humo y los muertos. Willard tiene que comunicar al comandante en jefe el motivo de su misión, que es completamente desconocida por el resto de sus compañeros de viaje. Pero el teniente Kilgore se muestra extrañado pues no había recibido ninguna información concerniente a ese tema. Se produce después una terrible batalla que al son de “Las Walkirias” destruye completamente una aldea de “Charlie”. El ataque se completa con la obligación del teniente Kilgore a sus subordinados de practicar “surf”, animado por la presencia en su campamento de uno de los más prestigiosos “surfer” del momento. Vuelven a embarcarse para continuar su trayecto y viajando ya por parajes completamente perdidos en la espesa selva, los tripulantes deciden descansar; y Chef lo va a aprovechar para recogen mangos, relatando durante la búsqueda a Willard sus habilidades culinarias. Pero la distensión de los dos hombres se ven interrumpidas por la aparición de un tigre que genera un descontrolado tiroteo de los soldados. Durante los pocos momentos de tranquilidad que Willard tiene continúa leyendo todos los informes de Kurtz y se va aproximando a la situación de un hombre al que no conoce, pero al que se siente muy cercano por su deterioro mental en la guerra. La siguiente parada es en un refugio de ocio para los soldados, donde compran provisiones y asisten a un espectáculo de chicas bailando que animan a los combatientes, y que acaban acosándolas. Continúan su recorrido y, al acercarse cada vez más a su objetivo, Willard decide comunicar el destino de su misión a Chief. Se origina una gran discusión entre los hombres porque comprende los peligros que entraña. Paralelamente Chef y Limpio discuten, mientras que Lance, imbuido cada vez más de la locura del viaje, se coloca pintura de camuflaje. El capitán continua informándose de Kurtz y una vez que termina de leer la carta que éste le envió a su hijo para explicarle toda su situación, encuentran un barco vietnamita en el río. Chief ordena la isnpección del mismo y Chef se encarga de realizarla, pero ante la descontrolada reacción de una de sus ocupantes, comienza una verdadera masacre en la que todos los vietnamitas mueren. La única superviviente es rematada por Willard para no tener que llevarla a un puesto de socorro como quería el resto de la tripulación. El viaje prosigue y cuando llegan al puente de Do-lung le entregan el correo al capitán. Intentan localizar al comandante en jefe, pero sólo hay soldados desmoralizados que atacan a la voz de un megáfono al otro lado del río. Durante la lectura de las cartas en el barco, en una de las cuales se informa a Willard que el hombre que había sido mandado anteriormente para cumplir la misma misión se había unido al bando de Kurtz, y mientras Lance juega con unos botes de humo de color rosa, son repentinamente atacados y Limpio muere escuchando la voz de su madre que, en una cinta magnetofónica, le pide que vuelva sano y salvo a casa. Posteriormente les inunda la niebla y en esos momentos de confusión son atacados por unos indígenas que ocasionan la muerte a Chief. Antes de morir intenta atravesar a Willard con la misma lanza que le han clavado. Finalmente llegan al reino de Kurtz, donde unos indígenas pintados de blanco y un periodista norteamericano le dan la bienvenida. Precisamente va a ser el reportero el que les comunique las extrañas condiciones de subordinación que en la comunidad existen hacia el dios Kurtz. Tras el encuentro con el capitán que había sido mandado anteriormente, convertido en uno más de los indígenas, vuelven al barco y Willard le explica a Chef que si no han vuelto en veintidós horas, solicite un ataque aéreo. Cuando vuelven otra vez a tierra, los indígenas apresan al capitán y lo conducen hasta Kurtz. En los aposentos del “genio” ambos reflexionan sobre sus orígenes y sobre las causas que le han impulsado a su actual situación. Posteriormente Willard es enjaulado y una vez que lo liberan, aunque sigue atado, Kurtz depositará la cabeza de Chef sobre sus rodillas. El capitán, a pesar de su libertad y de sus profundas conversaciones con Kurtz (en las que Willard comprende su locura y se da cuenta de que no existe tanta diferencia entre ambos), no se olvida de la misión que le ha sido encomendada, y aprovecha la celebración de un ritual por los indígenas, en el que matan a una vaca, para asesinar al coronel en el interior de sus aposentos con una herramienta similar. Tras el asesinato, Willard se convierte en el nuevo dios del pueblo; pero ha cumplido su misión y tiene que regresar a casa.

Summary Background: The Godfather Part II portrays the fictional Corleone family and its role in organized crime. The aims of this study are to describe the trauma and deaths portrayed in The Godfather Part II. Hypothesis: The hypotheses are that: a) male characters suffer more traumatic mechanism/death than females, b) more traumatic mechanisms occur in the second half of the film, and c) a higher percentage of traumatic mecha‐ nisms are penetrating. Methods: In this descriptive study, The Godfather Part II was viewed for incidents of significant traumatic mecha‐ nisms. Traumatic mechanisms were documented by time. Characters that died during the film were evaluated for type of mechanism and cause of death. Categorical comparisons were made with chi‐square tests, using an α = 0.05. Results: There were 27 traumatic mechanisms and 19 deaths. A total of 93% of the mechanisms involved male char‐ acters whereas 7% of the mechanisms involved female characters (p < 0.001). A total of 84% of the mortalities involved male characters whereas 16% of the mortalities involved a female character (p < 0.01). The traumatic mech‐ anisms and deaths were similar between halves of the film (both p > 0.05).
