Of 34 graduates from the training program, 28 securedemployment in the trucking industry. From August 1989 to June 1990, 725students were trained in the upgrade training program witha 100 percent success rate on the National License examination. The five-pageproject report is followed by the program materials. Thetraining program consists of two sessions. Session I covers laws; douDleand triple trailers; tank vehicles; and hazardous materials. SessionII covers hazardous materials. The retraining program consistscf four sessions. Session I covers law; control systems; basiccontrol; shifting; backing; and speed management. Session II topicsare visual search; communication; space management; night operation; extremedriving conditions; and hazard perception. Session III topicsare pretrip and posttrip; air brakes; skid control and recovery;emergency maneuvers; and emergency reporting. Session IV covers cargo inspection;weights and balances; securing cargo; special cargo; combinationvehicles; and curricula overview. Each session concludes withtest-taking skills and a proficiency test with answer key. The proposed program model can provide t'pe trucldng industry with professional caliber/technically competent drivers. 2. That the partnership approach, curriculum planning pncess and methodology employed in New Hampshire to address this national need can work in other states. Purpose Outcomes The College was able, through the craft committee process to establish on-going communications with: New Hampshire Motor Transport Associations, Teamsters Local 633, New Hampshire Department of Safety, and state trucking employers. With the assistance of these groups, the College developed a training program for commercia.ly licensed driers who were required to obtain a new CDL (Commercial Drivers License) from the Stale of New Hampshire by passing an examination based on national testing standards. In addition, the College was able to develop a 320 hour tractor trailer drivers training program. The cooperative partnership made it' ossible for the College to provide the trucking industry with Lducational resources which were non-existent prior to the project. Program Objectives Two project objectives: 1. A program for entry drivers. 2. An upgrade program for existing drivers confronted with licensing standards. Specific program objectives: 1. Employment of safe driving practices. 2. Mastery of effective controls of a vehicle under mo:ion. 3. Managing vehicles under extreme weather conditions. 4. Development of perceptual skills to recognize and deal with potential road hazards. 5. Development of manipulative skills to handle vehicles in daily and emergency situations. 6. Understanding of technical operations of vehicles and their systems. 7. Development of sufficient literary test-taking skills to enable the driver to not only pass the certification exams but also to be more effective in the administration of trucking related business. 2 3 Objectives Outcomes 1. A program for new entry drivers. A. The United States Department ofTransportation's Model Curriculum for Training Tractor Trailer Driverswas adopted by the partnership and implemented. This program consisted of 320hours of instruction and included: 114 hours of classroom instruction 126 hours of laboratory andrange practices 40 hours of behind theheel driving 40 hours of observation B. The advisory committee recommendedthat the program be replicated twice in Berlin and Nashua because of eie availabilityof employment opportunities. D. Placement of graduates: A total of 34individuals graduated from theprogram and of the number of graduates, 28secured employment in the trucking industry for a placement rate of 82%at this time. 2. An upgrade program for existing driversconfronted with licensing standards. A. The College developed atwenty hour Commercial Drivers Licensing Upgrade Training Manual which focuseson: (1) Subject matter and tests for the writtenexamination. (2) Instructional materials andcourse outlines. (3) Instructional strategies to address visual,kinesthetic and auditory learners. (4) A train the trainer programto train adjunct faculty from the industry. (5) From August 1989 to June 1990,a total of 725 students were trained with a 100% success rate on the National License examination. 3 4 oh (6) Training sessions were conducted in the following locations,on a rotating basis, as a suffident number of drivers' anniversary dates for license renewals emerged:Berlin, Conway, Hooksett, Nashua, Portsmouth, Keene, Claremont and Lebanon. The College experienced problems, initially with the Department of Safety in testing drivers prior to their anniversary date for renewal. In February, 1990, the Department of Safety agreed to test drivers prior to their ann:versary date. This produceda significant increase in enrollments in this program from March to June, 1990. (7) The College and Department of Safety conducted a total of twenty-three informational meetings, state-wide, to inform drivers about the new CDL and to promote the program. (8) One of the significant outcomes of this program focusedon the industry's request for a separate Hazardous Materials course for their drivers. This course was developed during the Summer of 1990 and will be offered to the industry in the Fall. The fact that this program was 100% successful, in view of the fact that students possessed limited test taking and literacy skills, suggests thatan instru,_ tional program addressing the learning modalitie3 must be imorporated into the program (see attached instructional training program). Concerns 1. Three hundred twenty hour Tractor Trailer Drivers Training Program. The analysis of this program points out several areas ofconcern that are associated with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Model Curriculum for Training Tractor Trailer Drivers. A. Discrepancies between the instructor's and student's manuals. (1)The two manuals do not correlate; the absence of a tracking mechanism makes the instructional and learning processes difficult. (2) In many instances, the time allocations in the Federal manual for certain training areas are insufficient for the students to comprehend the material. (3)In some cases the material is superfluous. This promotes boredomon the part of the students. (4) The section of the manual which addresses hours of service is, basedon the instructor's evaluation, insufficient and needs to be increased. (5)Critical to this program is the absence of correlation betweenthe instructor's and student training objectives. The absence of objectives creates omissions in training and does not provide a sense of continuity in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning domains. (6)Misspellings in the inst-uctor's and student's manualsare excessive. B. Inadequacies in the testing of student proficiencies. (1)The uniqueness of specific tests and hands-on demonstrationsto determine the student's competency levels are not clearly delineated. The absence of sequential criteria suggest that the testingprocesses do not have established standards. (2)No proficiency tests exist for basic controls. 4 5 (3)The proficiency documentatiofi sheets in the federal tnaaual are inadequate, being g .Deral, vague and do not list

Most roads with more than two lanes have broken white lines to separate the lanes. You may cross a broken white line when it is safe to change lanes, but you should not cross a solid white line. When changing lanes to prepare for a turn, you must signal your intention to do so at least 200 feet prior to changing lanes or turning. Your signal distance must be at least 300 feet before the turn if you are operating a vehicle in a speed zone of at least 50 miles per hour. Do not weave in and out of lanes, which will greatly increase your risk of an accident.

As we worked together, Lesser and I realized that the questions asked of those solutions were quite different in biology from those in the physical chemistry he knew. Biology is inherited. Information is passed by handfuls of atoms in the genetic code. A few atoms in the proteins built from the code change macroscopic function.     Special Driving Situations Only practice and experience can make you a good driver. About 40 percent of highway crashes involve drivers under 25 years old (RMV Crash Data Department). Most of these crashes are caused by driver inexperience. To be a good driver, you must follow these rules. • Give driving your full attention. Don’t be distracted while driving. Talking to passengers, adjusting a car stereo, or eating can all be dangerous. • Drive defensively, and keep your eyes on the road ahead. By staying alert, you will see hazards and have time to avoid them. • Learn to drive in different situations. Practice highway driving, night driving, and handling a motor vehicle in different weather conditions. • Know how to handle emergency situations, such as skidding or tire blowout. • Know, understand, and obey the rules of the road. This chapter explains defensive driving and how to handle special driving situations. It also tells you what to do if there is a crash, even if you are only a witness. CHAP TER 5 115 Moving Emergency Vehicle • Always yield the right-of-way to fire engines, ambulances, police cars, and other emergency vehicles that are using a siren and/or emergency flashing lights. • If an emergency vehicle is coming from any direction, you must pull as close as possible to the right side of the road. Stop until the vehicle has passed. Slowly rolling is not acceptable. • Check your mirrors and find a safe place to pull over to the right. You should not pull your vehicle to the left or slam on your brakes.
