EXCITING PERFORMANCE OPTIONS The Toyota Highlander, as you’ll find out as you keep reading this guide, is built around the idea of versatility. The cabin is versatile, the trim levels give you a ton of options to choose from, and the performance can be centered around traits that matter most to you. Engine Outputs There are a pair of engines, a pair of transmissions, and a host of drivetrain options to consider for the 2020 Toyota Highlander. If you want a little juice under the hood, you can go with the 3.5L V6 motor. The V6 is always sturdy and strong, offering 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. By choosing the 3.5L motor, your SUV will categorize as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle and will likely use an 8-speed automatic transmission to move from one gear to the next. The alternative engine is a hybrid 2.5L, which results in a net horsepower of 243. The net horsepower is garnered when combining the output of the electric battery with that of the 2.5L engine, which makes 186 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. By going hybrid, your SUV will register as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle and will be mated to an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission sporting sequential shift mode. The drivetrain options come in any of the following four arrangements: • Front-wheel drive • Dynamic torque vectoring AWD • All-wheel drive • Electronic on-demand AWD system 1 Fuel Economy Measurements The Toyota Highlander does a splendid job of keeping your fuel tank filled even as you travel long distances. While the hybrid engine outperforms the V6 motor, both still place fuel economy as a key priority. If you go for the V6 engine and choose the FWD arrangement, your SUV will return an EPA-estimated 21 city MPG/ 29 highway MPG.1 By going instead with the hybrid setup, you can expect a return of 36 city MPG/ 35 highway MPG according to Toyota estimates.2 Beyond the raw MPG figures, the Toyota Highlander also utilizes some savvy technology to get the most out of each fill-up. The Stop and Start Engine system, which comes with the 3.5L motor, actually shuts off your car when you come to a complete stop. The SUV remains off, saving fuel, until you release the brake pedal and are ready to go once again! A Capable Towing Machine Not everyone will use the towing power of the 2020 Toyota Highlander, but some appreciate the ability to bring along a trailer or boat during weekend getaways. If you’re a devoted traveler looking for ample towing capacity, the 2020 Highlander can reach up to 5,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity. Even if you decide to just stick with the hybrid powertrain, however, you’ll still see a reasonable towing capacity of 3,500 pounds! ROOM FOR THE WHOLE GANG With the Toyota Highlander, you have ample space to store belongings while also bringing your family, friends, or pets on a trip. The total passenger volume can measure as much as 141.3 cubic feet with three rows of seats for people to lounge in. Each row is spacious, too, with the headroom measuring 41.2 inches up front, 39.4 inches in the middle, and 36.1 inches in the rear. Legroom is also a strength, checking in at 42 inches up front, 41 inches in the second row, and 27.7 inches in the third row. So everyone can maintain their personal space even as you sit three people in the second row, there’s also plenty of hip room and shoulder room. Hip room measures 57.2 inches up front, 57 inches in the middle, and 45.6 inches in the rear while shoulder room is 59 inches, 58.7 inches, and 55 inches in the first, second, and third rows respectively. Finally, there’s the matter of cargo space, which can be altered to fit your needs. The certified vehicles are the Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Lexus RX 400h 2WD and 4WD vehicles. The tax credit for hybrid vehicles applies to vehicles purchased on or after January 1, 2006, and may be as much as $3,400 for those who purchase the most fuel-efficient vehicles. The hybrid vehicle certifications recently acknowledged by the IRS and their full credit amounts are: • 2007 Toyota Prius $3,150 • 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2WD and 4WD $2,600 • 2007 Lexus RX 400h 2WD and 4WD $2,200 The full credit amount for these Toyota and Lexus vehicles is available to qualifying purchasers through September 30, 2006. This tax credit replaced the tax deduction of $2,000, which was previously allowed for taxpayers who purchased a new hybrid vehicle before December 31, 2005, for the clean-burning fuel deduction. Many currently available hybrid vehicles have been certified and qualify for the credit. The credit for otherwise qualifying vehicles begins to phase out in the second calendar quarter after the quarter in which the manufacturer sells its 60,000th qualifying vehicle.
