We compute the special orthogonal group of certain lattice of signature (2; 1). 1. Introduction Given an even lattice M in a real quadratic space of signature (2; n), Borcherds lifting [1] gives a multiplicative correspondence between vec- tor valued modular forms F of weight 1¡n=2 with values in C[M 0=M] (= the group ring of M 0=M) and meromorphic modular forms on complex 0 varieties (O(2) £ O(n))nO(2; n)=Aut(M; F ). Here NM denotes the dual lattice of M, O(2; n) is the orthogonal group of M R and Aut(M; F ) is the subgroup of Aut(M) leaving the form F stable under the natural action of Aut(M) on M 0=M. In particular, if the signature of M is (2; 1), then O(2; 1) ¼ H: O(2) £ O(1) and Borcherds' theory gives a lifting of vector valued modular form of weight 1=2 to usual one variable modular form on Aut(M; F ). In this sense in order to work out Borcherds lifting it is important to ¯nd appropriate lattice on which our wanted modular group acts. In this article we will show: Theorem 1.1. We show that the order complex of the subgroup lattice of a finite group G is nonpure shellable if and only if G is solvable. A by-product of the proof that nonsolvable groups do not have shellable subgroup lattices is the determination of the homotopy types of the order complexes of the subgroup lattices of many minimal simple groups. 1. Introduction We will show that the order complex of the subgroup lattice of a finite group G is (nonpure) shellable if and only if G is solvable. The proof of nonshellability in the nonsolvable case involves the determination of the homotopy type of the order complexes of the subgroup lattices of many minimal simple groups. We begin with some history and basic definitions. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with some of the rudiments of algebraic topology and finite group theory. No distinction will be made between an abstract simplicial complex ∆ and an arbitrary geometric realization of ∆. Maximal faces of a simplicial complex ∆ will be called facets of ∆. Definition 1.1. 1-17-2018 Group Homomorphisms Here are the operation tables for two groups of order 4: · 1 a a2 + 0 1 2 1 1 a a2 0 0 1 2 a a a2 1 1 1 2 0 a2 a2 1 a 2 2 0 1 There is an obvious sense in which these two groups are “the same”: You can get the second table from the first by replacing 0 with 1, 1 with a, and 2 with a2. When are two groups the same? You might think of saying that two groups are the same if you can get one group’s table from the other by substitution, as above. However, there are problems with this. In the first place, it might be very difficult to check — imagine having to write down a multiplication table for a group of order 256! In the second place, it’s not clear what a “multiplication table” is if a group is infinite. One way to implement a substitution is to use a function. In a sense, a function is a thing which “substitutes” its output for its input. I’ll define what it means for two groups to be “the same” by using certain kinds of functions between groups. These functions are called group homomorphisms; a special kind of homomorphism, called an isomorphism, will be used to define “sameness” for groups. Definition. Let G and H be groups. A homomorphism from G to H is a function f : G → H such that f(x · y)= f(x) · f(y) forall x,y ∈ G. -

7 LATTICE POINTS AND LATTICE POLYTOPES Alexander Barvinok INTRODUCTION Lattice polytopes arise naturally in algebraic geometry, analysis, combinatorics, computer science, number theory, optimization, probability and representation the- ory. They possess a rich structure arising from the interaction of algebraic, convex, analytic, and combinatorial properties. In this chapter, we concentrate on the the- ory of lattice polytopes and only sketch their numerous applications. We briefly discuss their role in optimization and polyhedral combinatorics (Section 7.1). In Section 7.2 we discuss the decision problem, the problem of finding whether a given polytope contains a lattice point. In Section 7.3 we address the counting problem, the problem of counting all lattice points in a given polytope. The asymptotic problem (Section 7.4) explores the behavior of the number of lattice points in a varying polytope (for example, if a dilation is applied to the polytope). Finally, in Section 7.5 we discuss problems with quantifiers. These problems are natural generalizations of the decision and counting problems. Whenever appropriate we address algorithmic issues. For general references in the area of computational complexity/algorithms see [AB09]. We summarize the computational complexity status of our problems in Table 7.0.1. INTEGER POINTS ON SPHERES AND THEIR ORTHOGONAL LATTICES MENNY AKA, MANFRED EINSIEDLER, AND URI SHAPIRA (WITH AN APPENDIX BY RUIXIANG ZHANG) Abstract. Linnik proved in the late 1950’s the equidistribution of in- teger points on large spheres under a congruence condition. The congru- ence condition was lifted in 1988 by Duke (building on a break-through by Iwaniec) using completely different techniques. We conjecture that this equidistribution result also extends to the pairs consisting of a vector on the sphere and the shape of the lattice in its orthogonal complement. We use a joining result for higher rank diagonalizable actions to obtain this conjecture under an additional congruence condition. 1. Introduction A theorem of Legendre, whose complete proof was given by Gauss in [Gau86], asserts that an integer D can be written as a sum of three squares if and only if D is not of the form 4m(8k + 7) for some m, k N. Quotients and Homomorphisms, I Like with rings, we also have various natural connections between normal subgroups and group homomorphisms. To begin, observe that if ' : G ! H is a group homomorphism, then ker ' is a normal subgroup of G. In fact, I proved this fact earlier when I introduced the kernel, but let me remark again: if g 2 ker ', then for any a 2 G, then '(aga−1) = '(a)'(g)'(a−1) = '(a)'(a−1) = e. Thus, aga−1 2 ker ' as well, and so by our equivalent properties of normality, this means ker ' is a normal subgroup. Thus, we can use homomorphisms to construct new normal subgroups. Quotients and Homomorphisms, II Equally importantly, we can also do the reverse: we can use normal subgroups to construct homomorphisms. The key observation in this direction is that the map ' : G ! G=N associating a group element to its residue class / left coset (i.e., with '(a) = a) is a ring homomorphism. Indeed, the homomorphism property is precisely what we arranged for the left cosets of N to satisfy: '(a · b) = a · b = a · b = '(a) · '(b). Furthermore, the kernel of this map ' is, by definition, the set of elements in G with '(g) = e, which is to say, the set of elements g 2 N. Thus, kernels of homomorphisms and normal subgroups are precisely the same things. -

We also describe work of Higgins and of Taylor which makes this result usable for calculations. As an example, we compute the fundamental group of the symmetric square of a space. The main result, which is related to work of Armstrong, is due to Brown and Higgins in 1985 and was published in sections 9 and 10 of Chapter 9 of the first author’s book on Topology [3]. This is a somewhat edited, and in one point (on normal closures) corrected, version of those sections. Since the book is out of print, and the result seems not well known, we now advertise it here. It is hoped that this account will also allow wider views of these results, for example in topos theory and descent theory. Because of its provenance, this should be read as a graduate text rather than an article. The Exercises should be regarded as further propositions for which we leave the proofs to the reader. -

The groups Sn and An both permute the set f1; 2; : : : ; ng and Dn can be considered as a group of permutations of a regular n-gon, or even just of its n vertices, since rigid motions of the vertices determine where the rest of the n-gon goes. If we label the vertices of the n-gon in a definite manner by the numbers from 1 to n then we can view Dn as a subgroup of Sn. For instance, the labeling of the square below lets us regard the 90 degree counterclockwise rotation r in D4 as (1234) and the reflection s across the horizontal line bisecting the square as (24). More abstractly, if we are given a set X (not necessarily the set of vertices of a square), then the set Sym(X) of all permutations of X is a group under composition, and the subgroup Alt(X) of even permutations of X is a group under composition. If we list the elements of X in a definite order, say as X = fx1; : : : ; xng, then we can think about Sym(X) as Sn and Alt(X) as An, but a listing in a different order leads to different identifications 1 of Sym(X) with Sn and Alt(X) with An. -

We show that if there is an isomorphism λ2 : Sub (G × G) ! Sub (H × H), then there k k are isomorphisms λk : Sub (G ) ! Sub (H ) for all k. But this is not enough to force G to be isomorphic to H, for we also show that for any positive integer N there are pairwise nonisomorphic groups G1; : : : ; GN defined on the same finite set, k k all with cyclic Sylow subgroups, such that Sub (Gi ) = Sub (Gj ) for all i; j; k. 1. Introduction To what extent is a finite group determined by the subgroup lattices of its finite direct powers? Reinhold Baer proved results in 1939 implying that an abelian group G is determined up to isomorphism by Sub (G3) (cf. [1]). Michio Suzuki proved in 1951 that a finite simple group G is determined up to isomorphism by Sub (G2) (cf. [10]). Roland Schmidt proved in 1981 that if G is a finite, perfect, centerless group, then it is determined up to isomorphism by Sub (G2) (cf. [6]). Later, Schmidt proved in [7] that if G has an elementary abelian Hall normal subgroup that equals its own centralizer, then G is determined up to isomorphism by Sub (G3). It has long been open whether every finite group G is determined up to isomorphism by Sub (G3). (For more information on this problem, see the books [8, 11].) One may ask more generally to what extent a finite algebraic structure (or algebra) is determined by the subalgebra lattices of its finite direct powers. -
