DAVIS EXPEDITION FUND REPORT ON EXPEDITION/PROJECT Expedition/Project Title: The Effect of Proximity on the Sharing of Vocal Mimicry in the Spotted Bowerbird, Chlamydera maculata Travel Dates: 15/8/02 to 3/10/02 Location: Taunton National Park (Scientific), Queensland, Australia Group Members: Nina Rzechorzek (Biology undergraduate) ....................................................... Aims: To undertake the project described below, to gain invaluable biological fieldwork experience OUTCOME (not less than 300 words):- The Effect of Proximity on the Sharing of Vocal Mimicry in the Spotted Bowerbird, Chlamydera maculata Abstract Spotted bowerbirds, (Chlamydera maculata), are known to mimic a variety of other species’ calls. This investigation set out to see if male bower owners of neighbouring bowers copied more of the same calls than the owners of more distantly spaced bowers. This may suggest whether mimicry is copied from other males or if the sound environment is important in determining what is mimicked. Recordings made during observation periods will be analysed to determine the mimetic repertoire of the bower owners and these will then be statistically compared. Bowerbird vocalisations were also recorded during experimental presentations of stimuli of varying potential threats: a dove, a crow and a falcon. Analysis of the data collected is not compete, so it is not yet possible to conclude whether proximity has an effect on the sharing of vocal mimicry. Introduction The work was carried out on Taunton National Park (Scientific) which is located 250km West of Rockhampton, Central Queensland. The park was established primarily to protect the endangered Bridled Nail-tail wallaby, Onychogalea fraenata. The reserve comprises 11,626 ha in a square block with vegetation that forms a ‘complex mosaic’ of Acacia, (largely Brigalow, Acacia harpophylla), and Eucalypt communities with a small area of softwood scrub. -

The New Zealand Rain Forest: A Comparison with Tropical Rain Forest! J. W. DAWSON2 and B. V. SNEDDON2 ABSTRACT: The structure of and growth forms and habits exhibited by the New Zealand rain forest are described and compared with those of lowland tropical rain forest. Theories relating to the frequent regeneration failure of the forest dominants are outlined. The floristic affinities of the forest type are discussed and it is suggested that two main elements can be recognized-lowland tropical and montane tropical. It is concluded that the New Zealand rain forest is comparable to lowland tropical rain forest in structure and in range of special growth forms and habits. It chiefly differs in its lower stature, fewer species, and smaller leaves. The floristic similarity between the present forest and forest floras of the Tertiary in New Zealand suggest that the former may be a floristically reduced derivative of the latter. They used this evidence to propose that cotyledon size (at least in this species) was adaptive in surviving pre- and early post-germination hazards (Dalling & Harms 1999). In this note we describe the first record of multiple resprouting in an Australian tropical plant species. Idiospermum australiense (Diels) S. T. Blake (Calycanthaceae) exhibits characteristics similar (but not identical) to G. superba that support the contention of Dalling & Harms (1999). Idiospermum australiense is a rare canopy tree species (Briggs & Leigh 1996) that occurs in restricted populations in lowland tropical rain forests in north Queensland, Australia. The species produces the largest dicotyledonary dias- pore in the Australian flora. Fresh diaspores can weigh up to 225 g and com- prise between two and six thick, starchy cotyledons (modal cotyledon number is four) released within an ephemeral, corky seed coat (Worboys 1999). Diasp- ores are gravity dispersed and the seed coat rapidly decays, exposing cotyledons to the immediate environment prior to germination. -

Wood features ofthe family have been summarized by Metcalfe and Chalk (1950); various authors have mentioned one or more traits in studies dealing with Calycanthaceae (e.g., Wilson 1979) or other families (e.g., Garratt 1934). In view of recent interest in Idiospermum australiense (Diels) Blake, a new comparative study is needed. One goal of the present study is clarification of relationships of Idiospermum to Calycanthus and Chimonanthus. Wood anatomy of Idiospermum was described by Blake ( 1972) and Wilson ( 1979); a new description is offered here to provide more quantitative data. De scriptions of the wood of Calycanthus and Chimonanthus provided here incorporate such quantitative data, but also modify earlier descriptions with respect to some important qualitative features. Material of the recently de scribed genus Sinocalycanthus (Cheng and Chan 1964) was not available, although the description of that genus suggests it is not strongly different from Calycanthus or Chimonanthus. Handout 2 Natural Heritage Criteria and the Attributes of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area The notes that follow were derived by deconstructing the original 1988 nomination document to identify the specific themes and attributes which have been recognised as contributing to the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wet Tropics. The notes also provide brief statements of justification for the specific examples provided in the nomination documentation. Steve Goosem, December 2012 Natural Heritage Criteria: (1) Outstanding examples representing the major stages in the earth’s evolutionary history Values: refers to the surviving taxa that are representative of eight ‘stages’ in the evolutionary history of the earth. Relict species and lineages are the elements of this World Heritage value. Attribute of OUV (a) The Age of the Pteridophytes Significance One of the most significant evolutionary events on this planet was the adaptation in the Palaeozoic Era of plants to life on the land. The earliest known (plant) forms were from the Silurian Period more than 400 million years ago. These were spore-producing plants which reached their greatest development 100 million years later during the Carboniferous Period. This stage of the earth’s evolutionary history, involving the proliferation of club mosses (lycopods) and ferns is commonly described as the Age of the Pteridophytes. The range of primitive relict genera representative of the major and most ancient evolutionary groups of pteridophytes occurring in the Wet Tropics is equalled only in the more extensive New Guinea rainforests that were once continuous with those of the listed area. -

Overview The Currawinya National Park consists of a mosaic of low dunefields, lakes, claypans and saltpans. These occupy a central strip between rugged hills and scarps to the north and west which rise 50 m or more above the surrounding sand plains. Although the numerous lakes and swamps are scattered across alluvial areas of uniform relief and similar geological age, some are freshwater and others, often quite close and divided by only low levees, are salt or strongly brackish. 13. Physical Features The rugged hills and scarps on the north of the Park represent the southern extension of the Hoods Range.
