THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY JOB 25-31 Once, a journalist was assigned to the Jerusalem Bureau. She rented a flat that overlooked the Wailing Wall. Every day she noticed at the Wall the same old Jewish fellow, praying vigorously. The journalist could smell a story… One day she met him, and asked, “You come to the wall daily. How long have you been doing this, and what do you pray?” The man replied, “I’ve been to the Wailing Wall everyday for 25 years. In the morning I pray for world peace - go home, have a cup of tea - come back to pray for the eradication of disease.” The journalist was amazed. “How does it feel to come to this place every day for 2½ decades and pray?” The old man said sadly, “Like I’m praying to a wall.” That’s how Job felt about his prayers. Job was asking why he’ been struck by calamity, but God didn’t answer. Job felt like he was talking to a telephone pole. Job asked to know why – but God stayed silent. Job was demanding to know why – but God remained silent. Job was screaming to know why – but God remained silent. Job was pounding his fist and daring God to tell him why – but God was silent. It was like Job was praying to a wall… but God was watching, and listening, and preparing to respond… God will pay Job a visit, soon enough, but when God is ready - not when Job says jump. In the meantime, Job struggles in the silence. -

The curse laid on the feminine in Genesis solidified patriarchal order. Patriarchal rule on earth fell in step with the patriarchal system that existed in Heaven. There is an alchemical dictum "As Above, So Below." The Below refers to humanity’s earthly dwelling. The Above represents the place of the apprehended but unknowable God; it refers to the heavens, to the Theosphere. The Below operates in relations to the Above. Alchemists believed that humans were vessels wherein the spirit dwelled and that the objective of human existence was to re-establish the original harmony that once existed between the divine and humanity. The alchemist, Paracelsus, wrote that "everything that exists or takes place in the universe, exists or may take place in the constitution of man." But what if the Theosphere itself is dysfunctional or lacks harmony? What price does the Earth pay for such disharmony? At first glance, the obvious answer to the preceding questions is that the Below pays a heavy price. A dysfunctional order on earth raises an anxiety that, in the nuclear age, is too great to bear, namely, that humanity will destroy itself. But if disharmony abounds the Above it can be assumed that there exists a counter force which is trying to surmount what is dysfunctional. It is this discord in the Theosphere that calls for feminine nurturing and grace in order that the Above reflex a more mature and cohesive whole to the Below. -

Eternal Objects are Whitehead’s variant of Plato’s Forms, of Russell’s Universals, and of Santayana’s Essences. They are every potential form of mentality: ideas (numbers, classes, etc.), emotions (fear, joy, etc.), sensations (colours, tastes, etc.), and other human and inhuman forms. -

After The Death Of God: From Political Nihilism To Post-Foundational Democracy Clayton Lewis A Dissertation Submitted To The Faculty Of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirements For The Degree Of Doctor Of Philosophy Graduate Program In Social And Political Thought York University Toronto Ontario April 2017 © Clayton Lewis ii Abstract The topic of this dissertation is Heidegger’s deconstruction of metaphysics viewed through the prism of Nietzsche’s declaration that ‘God is dead’. I argue that Nietzsche’s transvaluation of value remains ensnared by the ‘will to power’ and the nihilistic destiny of the ‘eternal return’. I look at Heidegger’s late thought as a response to the disenchantment of nature and the technological ‘framing’ of Earth. I argue that the delineation of a non-instrumental way life requires a political turn that is quite different from Heidegger’s own conservative nationalism. While the post-structuralist appropriation of Heidegger’s late thought makes some tentative moves towards a post- foundational democracy, I argue that the deconstruction of political community stemming from Derrida, Levinas, and Nancy fails to adequately deal with the question of democratic sovereignty. In light of this inadequacy, I take up the political theory of Benjamin, Schmitt, and Agamben in order to further delineate a ‘negative political theology’ without reference to any metaphysical grounding of sovereign power. Essential to such a politics is the non-linear experience of time as ‘event’. I contrast Benjamin’s notion of empty ‘homogenous time’ with Agamben’s analysis of non-linear ‘revolutionary time’. I suggest that the eschatological remembrance of democracy requires an interruption of history as a linear sequence of time. -

Zarathustra and the Children of Abraham by James Luchte Zarathustra’s Nietzsche: From Guilt to Innocence Despite the fact that Nietzsche and his family considered his magnum opus to be blasphe- mous, and feared a backlash from the religious and political establishments, Thus Spoke Zara- thustra 1 was never banned. Indeed, not much notice was taken of it until well after Nietzsche’s collapse.2 In our era, this idiosyncratic work seems to stand in a paradoxical place, all its own. On the one hand, it is a work that is very well known and referenced with respect to some of its most famous phrases and words, such as ‘God is dead’, the ‘Last Man’, ‘Overman’ and ‘eternal recurrence of the same.’ On the other hand, it is a work that is little studied, either in literary, theological or philosophical contexts. The present essay seeks to redress this neglect through an exploration of the polemical context of Nietzsche’s charge of nihilism against monotheistic religions. Such a focus will allow an intersection of literary, theological and philosophical per- spectives in a broader interpretation of the significance ofThus Spoke Zarathustra as a challenge to both traditional, and radical, religious orthodoxies. It could be suggested that Nietzsche appropriates the name of Zarathustra in a vain attempt to subvert and go beyond Zoroaster, the inventor of good and evil.3 This attempt is vain, in a 1 Friedrich Nietzsche, Zarathustra: A Book for All and None, trans. The reference to Hegel’s “Glauben und Wissen” is crucial here, since my reading is meant to offer a supplement to Michael Naas’ commentary on “Faith and Knowledge”, Miracle and Machine, in which Naas states that he is not going to pursue the connection between Derrida and Hegel. It was, however, Hegel who defined the ‘modern religious sentiment’ in terms of the ‘religion of the death of God’, and this definition constitutes Derrida’s point of departure. Derrida agrees with Hegel’s diagnosis, but is also critical of its Protestant–Lutheran interpretation, which founds modern religiosity on the ‘memory of the Passion’, and attempts a different reading of the ‘death of God’ motif as the ‘divine retreat’, pointing to a non-normative ‘Marrano’ kind of faith that stakes on the alternative ‘memory of the Passover’. The apparent visibility of the ‘returning religion’ Derrida witnesses at the beginning of the 90s hides for him a new dimension of the ‘original faith’, which Derrida associates with the universal messianic justice and which he ascribes to the paradoxical position of the Marranos: the secret followers of the God ‘in retreat’.
