Liberal Democracy and the Prospect of Truth
This is how we drink up the sea: Liberal democracy and the prospect of truth NATALIA BEGHIN Abstract I begin my paper by deconstructing Nietzsche’s two distinct theories of truth—Perspectivism and Interpretationism—and the ways in which they differ from one another. I then suggest that by conceiving modern politics to mean liberal democracy, it follows that there are a number of critiques that Interpretationist truth has to bear on the institution. With this synthesis, I argue that rather than posing any danger to modern politics, liberal democracy is endangered only to the extent that it ignores Nietzschean theory and its ramifications for both the political institution and individuals in society. In particular, I suggest that there is a role for philosophy, theory, culture and art to ‘interrupt’ liberal democracy, and in so doing regenerate its capacity for creativity, guard against its habit of static domination, and frustrate its tendency toward deindividuation such that institutions and individuals can attain existential and material freedom. My conclusion supports the notion that a positive understanding of nihilistic philosophy is credible, and could be constructively employed to enrich the political experience if actors chose to embrace it. Is Dumbo the Übermensch? In 1941, Disney released Dumbo, its fourth technicolour animation, to great acclaim. Dumbo is about a circus elephant that is teased for his protruding ears, but tricked into believing he can fly by way of holding a ‘magic’ crow feather in his trunk. When Dumbo is called on to save the circus, he realises he has misplaced his feather, and refuses to face danger in the belief that his ability to soar was contingent on its magical powers. -

Fugitive Pleasure and the Meaningful Life: Nietzsche on Nihilism and Higher Values Paul Katsafanas Forthcoming in Journal of the American Philosophical Association Penultimate draft In an early text, Nietzsche tells us that philosophers have a distinctive and undeniably exalted role: their “proper task” is “to be lawgivers as to the measure, stamp and weight of things” (UM III.3).1 Not particular things, though: Nietzsche does not imagine philosophers assessing the value of apples and trips to the countryside. No, the philosopher’s distinction “lies in his having before him a picture of life as a whole, in order to interpret it as a whole” (UM III.3). Philosophers are to take “existence” as a whole into view, and “determine its value”, asking “what is life worth as such?” (UM III.3) Put plainly: philosophers are supposed to assess the value or meaning of life. That’s not a recognizable philosophical task for most of us. These heady goals can seem rather adolescent, indeed absurd—why think that anyone is in a position to make a global assessment about the value of life? What would the criteria for such an assessment be? THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY JOB 25-31 Once, a journalist was assigned to the Jerusalem Bureau. She rented a flat that overlooked the Wailing Wall. Every day she noticed at the Wall the same old Jewish fellow, praying vigorously. The journalist could smell a story… One day she met him, and asked, “You come to the wall daily. How long have you been doing this, and what do you pray?” The man replied, “I’ve been to the Wailing Wall everyday for 25 years. In the morning I pray for world peace - go home, have a cup of tea - come back to pray for the eradication of disease.” The journalist was amazed. “How does it feel to come to this place every day for 2½ decades and pray?” The old man said sadly, “Like I’m praying to a wall.” That’s how Job felt about his prayers. Job was asking why he’ been struck by calamity, but God didn’t answer. Job felt like he was talking to a telephone pole. Job asked to know why – but God stayed silent. Job was demanding to know why – but God remained silent. Job was screaming to know why – but God remained silent. Job was pounding his fist and daring God to tell him why – but God was silent. It was like Job was praying to a wall… but God was watching, and listening, and preparing to respond… God will pay Job a visit, soon enough, but when God is ready - not when Job says jump. In the meantime, Job struggles in the silence. -

The curse laid on the feminine in Genesis solidified patriarchal order. Patriarchal rule on earth fell in step with the patriarchal system that existed in Heaven. There is an alchemical dictum "As Above, So Below." The Below refers to humanity’s earthly dwelling. The Above represents the place of the apprehended but unknowable God; it refers to the heavens, to the Theosphere. The Below operates in relations to the Above. Alchemists believed that humans were vessels wherein the spirit dwelled and that the objective of human existence was to re-establish the original harmony that once existed between the divine and humanity. The alchemist, Paracelsus, wrote that "everything that exists or takes place in the universe, exists or may take place in the constitution of man." But what if the Theosphere itself is dysfunctional or lacks harmony? What price does the Earth pay for such disharmony? At first glance, the obvious answer to the preceding questions is that the Below pays a heavy price. A dysfunctional order on earth raises an anxiety that, in the nuclear age, is too great to bear, namely, that humanity will destroy itself. But if disharmony abounds the Above it can be assumed that there exists a counter force which is trying to surmount what is dysfunctional. It is this discord in the Theosphere that calls for feminine nurturing and grace in order that the Above reflex a more mature and cohesive whole to the Below. -

The god’s being is not based on faith but, in part, on the logical necessity of Eternal Objects which constitute His transcendent nature. Eternal Objects are Whitehead’s variant of Plato’s Forms, of Russell’s Universals, and of Santayana’s Essences. They are every potential form of mentality: ideas (numbers, classes, etc.), emotions (fear, joy, etc.), sensations (colours, tastes, etc.), and other human and inhuman forms. -
