List of IFLA Standards Status: May 2014

This list of IFLA Standards has been compiled for the IFLA Committee on Standards which was formed by the IFLA Governing Board and started its activities in January 2012. The list will be used as a basis for the Committee’s work which will start with the defining of IFLA standards, before going on to review their currency, coordinate their maintenance and development, promote them, and otherwise coordinate activities associated with the IFLA standards so defined.

The list was originally compiled in 2011 by Patrice Landry using IFLA’s professional units’ web pages, the IFLA website (publications, guidelines), and from the following sources:

First, do no Harm: A register of Standards, Codes of Practice, Guidelines Recommendations and Similar Works relating to preservation and Conservation in and . Compiled by John McIlwaine on behalf of the IFLA Preservation and Conservation Section, March 2005.

National Libraries Section The following, though not IFLA standards, have been prepared with varying degrees of IFLA’s involvement. The situation regarding revisions and new editions will be investigated.

2003. Guidelines for the preservation of digital heritage. Prepared by the of Australia (Colin Webb, et al.). Paris: UNESCO, 2003. http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0013/001300/130071e.pdf The present document, prepared for UNESCO under contract with the National Library of Australia, introduces general and technical guidelines for the preservation and continuing accessibility of the ever growing digital heritage of the world. This document is intended to be a companion volume of the Draft Charter on the Preservation of the Digital Heritage.

2000. Guidelines for legislation. By Jules Larivière. Rev. , enl. and upd. ed. of the 1981 publ. by Jean Lunn. Paris: UNESCO, 2000.

English: http://www.ifla.org/files/assets/national-libraries/publications/guidelines-for-legal-deposit-legislation- en.pdf (htm version: http://www.ifla.org/VII/s1/gnl/legaldep1.htm) Sincere appreciation is due to UNESCO, which, through IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), provided the financial support for this research work, and to the National Library of Canada for directing the project. The content of this publication is the opinion of the author only and does not imply the expression of any opinion on the part of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), UNESCO or the National Library of Canada. The National Library of Canada did, however, play an instrumental role in the co-ordination of the project. 1997. Guidelines for legislation for national libraries services. Prepared by Peter Johan Lor with the assistance of Elizabeth A.S. Sonnekus http://www.ifla.org/VII/s1/gnl/ This document has been prepared by Peter J. Lor under contract with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). It follows three previous UNESCO documents dealing with national libraries: Guy Sylvestre's Guidelines for national libraries (PGI-87/WS/17), Maurice Line's National library and information needs: alternative means of fulfilment, with special reference to the role of national libraries (PGI- 89/WS/9), and Graham P. Cornish's The role of national libraries in the new information environment (PGI- 91/WS/4).

1996. The legal deposit of electronic publications. Prepared by a Working Group of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) chaired by Brian Lang. Paris: UNESCO, 1996. http://www.unesco.org/webworld/memory/legaldep.htm The present document, prepared by a CDNL Working Group chaired by Brian Lang, Chief Executive of the British Library, suggests guidelines for national libraries both in developing and developed countries on how to prepare proposals for the legal deposit of electronic publications and on how to house and maintain such publications. It complements the UNESCO ‘Guidelines for legal deposit legislation’, prepared in 1981 by Jean Lunn (PGI-81/WS/23).

1989. National library and informational needs. By Maurice B. Line. Paris: UNESCO. v, 62 pages. This document has been prepared by Maurice B. Line under contract with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). It was directly inspired by Guy Sylvestre`s Guidelines for National Libraries, published by Unesco in 1987 (PGI-87WS17), to which it can serve as a sort of companion volume. It is complimentary to the earlier Guidelines as it looks at national libraries not from the starting point of their existence and practice, but from the viewpoint of national library and information needs (i. e. those needs that should be met at a national rather than a local level).

1987. Guidelines for national libraries. By Guy Sylvestre. Paris: UNESCO. iv, 102 pages. This document has been prepared by Guy Sylvestre under contract with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). The initiative originally came from the Conference of Directors of national Libraries which, at IFLA`s request, acted as executor of the contract.
