There are two ways to conquer a country; the first is to subordinate the inhabitants and govern them directly or indirectly.… The second is to replace the former inhabitants with the conquering race. ———Alexis de Tocqueville (2001[1841]: 61). One can instinctively think of neo-colonialism but there is no such thing as neo-settler colonialism. ———Lorenzo Veracini (2010: 100). WHAT’ S IN A NAME? It is rare in popular usage to distinguish between imperialism and colonialism. They are treated for most intents and purposes as synonyms. Today, Malay has grown into one of the largest languages in the world, with over 250 million users. Remarkable because Malay never was the largest language in the area (Javanese, Sundanese) nor was it centrally located. Inevitable because whenever it counted, there was no alternative. LANGUAGE SIZE: FACTORS Endangered languages: Factors that lead to endangerment (Brenzinger 1991) Discussion of factors that make a language large have focused on individual speaker choice Today’s point: Languages grow large primarily as a result of them being adopted & promoted by a powerful state Speaker take-up is an epiphenomenon of that. Besides family members and Santiniketan associates, Tagore wrote to different personalities like litterateurs, poets, artists, editors, thinkers, scientists, politicians, statesmen and government officials. These letters form a substantial part of intellectual output of ‘Tagoreana’ (all the intellectual output of Rabindranath). The present paper attempts to study the growth pattern of letters written by Rabindranath and to find out whether it follows Bradford’s Law. It is observed from the study that Rabindranath wrote letters throughout his literary career to three hundred fifteen persons covering all aspects such as literary, social, educational, philosophical as well as personal matters and it does not strictly satisfy Bradford’s bibliometric law. Students are required to meet with me at least once by the end of the fourth week of the semester – please set up a meeting through email. Credit Hours: This 3-credit course meets as a group for 3 hours per week (according to UW- Madison's credit hour policy, each lecture counts as 1.5 hours). The course also carries the expectation that you will spend an average of at least 2 hours outside of class for every hour in the classroom. In other words, in addition to class time, plan to allot an average of at least 6 hours per week for reading, writing, preparing for discussions, and/or studying for quizzes and exams for this course. 1 Course Requirements: 1. This course is a historical introduction to the postcolonial history, political identity and political consciousness in the South Asian nation-states of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Myanmar. We shall study the evolution of modern South Asia and the intricate relationship between the neighboring sovereign states that emerged out of the partition of colonial India in 1947 and their interactions with their immediate postcolonial neighbors, through close readings of primary sources and relevant historiographical and theoretical literature.
