However, both the “Nordic model” and Nordic media systems are under pressure as the conditions for political communication change – not least due to weakened political parties and the widespread use of digital communication media. In this anthology, the similarities and differences in political communication across the Nordic countries are studied. Traditional corporatist mechanisms in the Nordic countries are increasingly challenged by professionals, such as lobbyists, a development that has consequences for the processes and forms of political communication. Populist polit- ical parties have increased their media presence and political influence, whereas the news media have lost readers, viewers, listeners, and advertisers. These developments influence societal power relations and restructure the ways in which political actors • Edited by: Eli Skogerbø, Øyvind Ihlen, Nete Nørgaard Kristensen, & Lars Nord • Edited by: Eli Skogerbø, Øyvind Ihlen, Nete Nørgaard communicate about political issues. • Scandinavian Political Journalism in a Time of Fake News and Disinformation
Chapter 14 Scandinavian political journalism in a time of fake news and disinformation Bente Kalsnes, Kajsa Falasca, & Aske Kammer Abstract Focusing on fake news, disinformation, and misinformation, this chapter addresses how the main actors in the political communication process (politicians, news media, and citizens) deal with the increasingly complex information environment in Scandinavia. In this chapter, we examine how politicians apply the term “fake news” in relation to both news media and political opponents. Additionally, we address how the news media deal with the challenge of fake news and disinforma- tion, typically through verification and fact-checking. Lastly, we examine how citizens relate to fake news, employing data from the Reuters Digital News Report (Newman et al., 2018) from the three Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. This study demonstrates that we need new methods for digital source criticism, verification, and media literacy in an information environment suited to the information manipulation of text, icons, images, and video. Keywords: fake news, disinformation, social media, polical journalism, political communication Introduction In April 2018, a seemingly mundane and perhaps even trivial event took place when the employment of Sólrun Rasmussen as a high-school teacher in Copenhagen ended. However, her marriage to Danish prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen – and in particular his participation as an assessor in a meeting with the principal of the school – made the event interesting to the news media. The Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet covered the meeting, indicat- ing that she had been fired and questioning whether the prime minister had mixed his private and professional roles (Østergaard & Mathiessen, 2018).

  • Norwegian Cinema 1997-2006
Norwave: Norwegian Cinema 1997-2006 ELLEN REES ABSTRACT: This article will examine Norwegian cinema from 1997 to 2006, a period marked by a growing awareness of both the international film market and the demands of an increasingly sophisticated domestic market on the part of Norwegian filmmakers. This period has come to be known as “Norwave.” It will be argued that the films of the Norwave attempt a two-fold task—on the one hand they seek to gain international acclaim of the kind associated with the likes of the Danish Dogma 95 directors and Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, while on the other hand they attempt to create a public forum for the working out of specific issues in contemporary Norwegian identity and ideology. By analyzing eight of the most successful Norwegian films from the decade, the study maps out this tension between these global and local aspirations.

  • Denmark High Media Independence and Informal Democratic Traditions in the Newsroom
Chapter 4 Denmark High media independence and informal democratic traditions in the newsroom Mark Blach-Ørsten, Rasmus Burkal, Eva Mayerhöffer, & Ida WilligI Introduction Denmark is a small Northern European country with 5.8 million inhabitants. Together with Sweden and Norway, Denmark is part of a group of Scandina- vian welfare states with a tradition of public support for both broadcasters and newspapers, strong professional associations for journalists, and a significant share of foundation-owned newspapers. Politically, Denmark is considered a mature liberal democracy. Freedom in the World 2021: status “free” (Score: 97/100, stable since 2017). Denmark is a robust democracy with regular free and fair elections. Citizens enjoy full political rights, the government protects free expression and association, and the judiciary functions independently. However, Denmark has struggled to uphold fundamental freedoms for immigrants and other newcomers. (Freedom House, 2021) Liberal Democracy Index 2020: Denmark is placed in the Top 10% bracket (rank 1 of measured countries, up from 5 in 2016) (Varieties of Democracy Institute, 2017, 2021). Freedom of Expression Index 2018: rank 2 of measured countries, up from 6 in 2016 (Varieties of Democracy Institute, 2017, 2019). 2020 World Press Freedom Index: rank 3 of 180 countries (after Norway and Fin- land, 1 and 2, respectively), up from 5 in 2019 (Reporters Without Borders, 2020). Swedish Radiation Protection institute Bent Lauritzen Ris0 National Laboratory, Denmark February 2001 Abstract This report describes the national systems for emergency monitoring of radio- activity in the five Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden as well as in the six Baltic Sea countries, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the Russian Federation. Similarities and differences re- garding strategy and equipment are shown briefly. The main feature for early warning is the national network of automatic gamma monitoring stations. This network is supplemented by manual stations and/or survey teams, often meas- uring at predetermined locations. Air filter stations are used for nuclide analy- ses of particles and gases. Dose rate maps and fallout maps of ground depos- ited nuclides, e.g., cesium-137, are produced based on data from airborne measurements, monitoring stations, survey teams and environmental samples. Most countries describe programs for checking food contamination. Whole body counting and organ measurements are used to determine internal con- tamination. External contamination of people, vehicles, goods etc is checked with survey meters and other equipment at checkpoints
