Cattelino, Chair In this dissertation I aim to show that there has been a shift in racial formation in the United States since the terrorist attacks of September 11th. I chart this new racial formation through theorizing from the everyday realities of working class, predominantly Muslim, South Asian and Indo-Caribbean youth in New York City, some of whom were undocumented. By utilizing ethnographic methods, I dissect their seemingly contradictory lived experiences of 1) national belonging stemming from multicultural comfort in a city famous for its diversity and 2) exclusion from cultural citizenship dictated by struggles with modes of racialization, surveillance, and criminalization more commonly associated with Arabs, Blacks, and Latinos. I map out the current racial formation, which explains South Asians’ paradoxical positioning, through examining the intersection of state policies with intersubjective and emotional experiences of race and racism. I find that South Asians' seemingly contradictory ii positioning is produced through three mechanisms of the current racial formation: the emphasis on diversity and pervasiveness of color blind ideology; shifting notions of race that criminalize widening domains of difference, especially religion and immigration status; and national security panics centered on youth, terrorism, and crime. I demonstrate how multicultural belonging, color blind ideology, and racial exclusion — despite their apparent contradictions — shape cultural citizenship and function together as a means of social control in the 21st century. Analyzing the paradoxical position of South Asians, as the country moves toward becoming a majority minority nation, can lead to revelations about race and racism, their connections with cultural citizenship, and their relations to power beyond a single scale. Understanding racial formation after September 11th provides the possibility to learn about race more broadly — including its continued significance and its evolution during times of war, nativism, and coalition building. iii This dissertation of Veena Hampapur is approved. Promoting these values through comedy, the artists hope to contribute to abating prejudice and discrimination in Germany’s multi-ethnic society. Fusing the traditional theatrical principle of “prodesse et delectare” with contemporary cultural politics, these comedians produce something of political relevance: making their audience aware of its conceptions of “self” and “other” and fostering a sense of community across diverse cultural identifications. My thesis builds mainly on the works of Kathrin Bower, Maha El Hissy, Erol Boran, Deniz Göktürk, and Christie Davies. Whereas Davies denies humor’s potential for cultural impact, Göktürk elucidates its destabilizing power in immigrant films. Boran elaborates this function for Turkish-German Kabarett. El Hissy connects Kabarett, film, and theater of polycultural artists and ties them to Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque and the medieval jester. Bower published several essays on the works of ethno-comedians as humorous catalysts for advancing a multiethnic Germany.

    Telling Other Peoples’ Stories in a Multicultural Society Jo Henwood Because 98% of the Australian people are from immigrant stock the Storytelling revival of the 1970s-80s was not a matter of Storytellers remembering lost stories and traditions but of going to the library. We learnt our stories in books that had collected folktales from all around the world and these were the stories we told in a multicultural society where our people, our stories, our festivals come from all over the world. But how much right does someone outside a culture have to tell that culture‟s stories? If we tell, how should it be done? The most contentious negotiation for most Australian Storyteller s is the rights and wrongs of telling Aboriginal Dreaming stories so that will be my focus today, but it is my hope that this will illuminate the path to take in any cross cultural storytelling. Why we shouldn’t tell Much has been taken from indigenous Australians: land, citizenship, health, family. Practices of successful invaders include the abolition of language, and thus of story and cultural identity. Colonialism extends from appropriating not only the material but the intangible: taking their paintings and putting them on tea towels, taking their stories and telling them in ways never intended by the communities, then consigning the culture holders to invisibility. (Maddern, 2011; Langrish, 2010; Rose, 2011;Brian Attebery in Finch, 2012) For Indigenous cultures, drama and performance are central to identity, place and belonging and are an expression of a unique and continuing tradition (Australia Council, Performing arts, 2007).

However, we know little about the adaptation experiences of African refugee youth in Canada. Accordingly, this paper presents the adaptation experiences of African refugee youth and makes recommendations for ways to support youth. Twenty-eight youth took part in semi-structured interviews. Using a thematic analysis approach, qualitative data revealed four themes of: (1) ‘disruption in the family,’ where youth talked about being separated from their parent(s) and the effect on their adaptation; (2) ‘our cultures are different,’ where youth shared differences between African and mainstream Canadian culture; (3) ‘searching for identity: a cultural struggle,’ where youth narrated their struggles in finding identity; and (4) ‘learning the new culture,’ where youth narrated how they navigate African and Canadian culture. Using critical linguistic ethnography, this study traces how 아미 microbloggers’ digital conversations embody Jenkins’ principles of participatory fandom and Wenger’s characteristics of communities of learning practice. By creating Wei’s multilingual translanguaging spaces, 아미 assemble interest-based collectives Pérez González calls translation adhocracies, who collaboratively access resources, produce content and distribute fan compositions within and beyond fandom members. In-school K-12 and secondary learning writing Composition and Literacy Studies’ theory, research and pedagogy imagine learners as underdeveloped novices undergoing socialization to existing “native” discourses and genres and acquiring through “expert” instruction competencies for formal academic and professional “lived” composing. Box 2329, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Email: [email protected] Abstract The study sought to examine the impact of Kuria clans’ categorization on perceived similarities and differences among clan and its contribution on inter-clan prejudice. The used in this study were collected from sixty six respondents who were purposively selected from government officials and members of the Kira, Nchari and Renchoka using interview and focus group discussion. The findings indicated that categorization has laid the feeling of indifferences and prejudice among the Kuria clans. The findings also indicated that the deep rooted perceptions of differences have caused each clan to perceive itself as an independent tribe and not clan of the same Kuria ethnic group. Additionally, categorization has lead clan groups to share the available resources based on the existing groups. This evokes prejudices and inter-clan competition over resources which consequently lead to inter- clan conflict. It was concluded that strategies such as seminars, use of media and integrated education can be used to reduce the perceived inter clan differences, cultivate inclusive identity and increase inter clan social cohesion.
