On 25th of March we celebrated Greek Independence Day and the Annunciation. We would like to thank Fr. Treantafeles for his prayers and his passionate and informative talk on our history. Blue and white were the colors of the day. Ladies from Saint Nectarios Philoptochos PALM SUNDAY MORNING treated us to a fabulous assortment of homemade sweets and Greek coffee. On the same day, children from Saint John’s Guardian Angel School entertained the facility with Greek songs and "Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord..." dance. Residents, children, guests and staff became one big group, singing patriotic songs and dancing to traditional songs. (Palm Sunday celebrates the glorious and brilliant feast of the En- trance of Jesus into Jerusalem. Zechariah had prophesied the en- , Passover and Easter is upon us and we have many things trance of the Messiah into Jerusalem, saying: "Rejoice great- to do to prepare. There will be religious services and many activities for all during this holy season. We wish you a Happy Hanukah and a ly...O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, the King comes unto Thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding blessed and glorious Easter. Kalo Pascha! upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass." (Zech. 9:9) The contemporary Jews associated this prophecy with the expected Messiah. This action of Christ testifies to His nature as Savior, but with the definite declaration that His Kingdom was not of this world. The news that Christ was in Bethany provoked a general enthusiasm of ac-

ceptance, but also of indignation among the High Priests, who had decided to kill Christ. The main road leading to Jerusalem was covered with palm trees. The multitudes, with palm branches in their hands, spread their cloaks on the road as a show of respect, crying out, "Hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is He that comes in the name of the 660 Lake Cook Road 1913 Waukegan Road Lord.' All the actions and words of the people and of Christ had a Messianic meaning readily recognized by the Deerfield, IL Glenview, IL Phone: 847-940-0777 Phone: 847-486-1988 Jews of that time. EASTER EGGS

Easter eggs are specially decorated eggs given out to celebrate the Easter festival. The custom of the originated in the early Christian community of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ, shed at his crucifixion. As such, for Christians, the Easter egg is a symbol of the empty tomb. The oldest tradition is to use dyed chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute eggs made from chocolate, or plastic eggs filled with candy such as jellybeans.

The is a popular legendary anthropomorphic Easter gift-giving character analogous to Santa Claus in American culture. Many Americans follow the tradition of coloring hard-boiled eggs and giving baskets of candy. On , the President of the United States holds an annual Easter egg roll on the White House lawn for young children. Since the rabbit is a pest in Australia, the is available as an alternative. Easter eggs are a widely popular symbol of new life in Poland and other Slavic countries' folk traditions. A batik-like decorating process known as pisanka produces intricate, brilliantly-colored eggs. The celebrated House of Fabergé workshops created exquisite jeweled eggs for the Russian Imperial Court.

April 1 has long been celebrated as a day to celebrate, well, foolishness to be GARCC Women’s Auxiliary exact. More specifically, April Fools’ Day is about making other people look stupid with practical jokes. Mother’s Day Luncheon, As dearly as we hold the tradition of making fools of the people we care about, there’s little more than theories about where April Fools’ Day came from. Figuring out the origins of the holiday can be as tricky as getting to the source of a joke. Bake Sale and Raffle*

No Joke: April Fools’ Asteroid Was a Near Miss. The most common theory about Saturday, May 13, 2017 the earliest April Fools’ celebrations goes like this: In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull decreeing a new standard calendar for Christian Europe that would take his name and centuries later 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. become the standard internationally in the 21st century. Prior to the 15th century, Europe’s nations and city states operated using the Julian calendar. The Gregorian Make your Reservations by To purchase tickets and make calendar moved the date of the new year from April 1 to January 1, among other changes.
