Santa Clara SUGGESTED ITINERARIES Dining Public Santa Clara With everything from fun family attractions and interactive, educational museums to historic sites, a college campus, and the world’s most high-tech stadium, Santa Clara covers all the bases. You will be able to enjoy various things to do in Santa Clara. Spend the day riding rollercoasters, watching unique shows, meeting PEANUTS characters, or even floating down a lazy river, in the summer months, at California’s Great America. The whole family will enjoy hands-on exhibits at the Intel Museum or see a piece of history at Mission Santa Clara. One of the most popular attractions in Santa Clara is Levi’s Stadium. Guests can attend one of the stadium’s many exciting events and/or go on a stadium tour. SUGGESTED ITINERARIES Technology and Education Tour Spend your day in Santa Clara learning about the technology that made Silicon Valley famous. Begin by visiting the Intel Museum and Intel Museum Store where you will be introduced to the micro-miniature world of computer chips. Hands-on exhibits offer an in-depth view of how computer chips are made and used in our everyday lives. From there, spend an hour or more touring through the three levels of the Tech Museum of Innovation. The Tech’s major themed galleries are packed full of unique, interactive exhibit’s detailing technology’s exciting future. End your day in Silicon Valley at the world class NASA Ames Exploration Center or tour Stanford University. One hour walking tours of the main campus are available. Admission is FREE to the Intel Museum and NASA Ames. The Tech Museum of Innovation and Stanford University have special group rates. Allow 7-8 hours. California’s Great America California’s Great America has the region’s best variety of coasters and exhilarating rides, plus concerts, festivals, and special events. The park offers the most kids’ rides and the most water rides in the region, plus Planet Snoopy, including a chance to meet Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and other Peanut’s characters. It is the only theme park in California to offer a complete water park inside – free with admission. The Park is open from late March through December. World Class Shopping Shop Silicon Valley at world-class outlet centers, upscale shopping malls, or electronic superstores. Spend hours browsing through the largest collection of manufacturer and off-price outlets in Northern California at the Great Mall. From there, it’s just a short drive to the valley’s most upscale shopping malls: Westfield Valley Fair and Santana Row. Continue your day of shopping at the Stanford Shopping Center where you will find restaurants and cafes – all in an exquisite outdoor setting. Santa Clara Heritage Tour Beautiful gardens, adobe walls, and California’s oldest institution of higher learning can be found at Mission Santa Clara de Asis, the eighth of the 21 world famous California missions. Founded in 1777 by the Franciscans and later, the Jesuits opened a school on the mission site, which is now Santa Clara University. After your tour see the surrounding Mission Gardens. Time permitting, visit other Heritage/Historical sites. Dining Whether sampling cuisine from fine dining restaurants on an evening out or searching for banquet facilities for an event, visitors to Santa Clara will find a multitude of ethnically diverse culinary choices Public Transportation The Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) train operates 4 morning and evening trains, Monday – Friday. The ACE train begins its daily service in the San Joaquin Valley, through the Tri-Valley and ends in San Jose/Silicon Valley. Caltrain is a commuter train along the peninsula from San Francisco to San Jose. It has stops at every city along the way. Caltrain is currently operating seven days a week. You can take Caltrain from San Francisco to Santa Clara. .

The Industrial Construction of Semiconductor Innovation I In the early 1990s an integrated circuit first made in 1969 and thus ante­ dating by two years the chip typically seen as the first microprocessor (Intel's 4004), became a microprocessor for the first time. The stimulus for this piece ofindustrial alchemy was a patent fight. A microprocessor patent had been issued to Texas Instruments, and companies faced with patent infringement lawsuits were looking for prior art with which to challenge it. 2 This old integrated circuit, but new microprocessor, was the ALl, designed by Lee Boysel and used in computers built by his start-up, Four-Phase Systems, established in 1968. In its 1990s reincarnation a demonstration system was built showing that the ALI could have oper­ ated according to the classic microprocessor model, with ROM (Read Only Memory), RAM (Random Access Memory), and I/O (Input/ Output) forming a basic computer. The operative words here are could have, for it was never used in that configuration during its normal life­ time. Instead it was used as one-third of a 24-bit CPU (Central Processing Unit) for a series ofcomputers built by Four-Phase.3 Examining the ALl through the lenses of the history of technology and business history puts Intel's microprocessor work into a different per­ spective. The differences between Four-Phase's and Intel's work were industrially constructed; they owed much to the different industries each saw itselfin.4 While putting a substantial part ofa central processing unit on a chip was not a discrete invention for Four-Phase or the computer industry, it was in the semiconductor industry.
